Abstract

The pandemic of covid-19 has had a negative impact on schooling quality around the world. The lack of student enthusiasm to learn using digital platforms is one issue leading to the low quality of education. Several prior types of research have looked into how students perceive their motivation to learn in the face of pandemic covid-19. However, modal analysis to reveal students' motivation through their written personal views on learning during the epidemic of Covid-19 remains a relatively unexplored area. This research aims to expose the students’ motivation to learn during the outbreak of covid-19 using modality theory. 20 English Department students, Faculty of Language and Arts, University of HKBP Nommensen were involved in this research. The students were assigned to write an essay about their experiences and opinions of learning amid the covid-19 outbreak.   The essay consists of approximately 250 words. The research was conducted in a mixed method. The results showed that the most modality used in the text is probability 39.82%, afterwards frequency 27.60%, obligation 17.19%, and inclination 15.39%, respectively. A medium level or category dominated each type of modality. Regarding polarity, 159 (71.95%) of modal words were in the positive range, and the rest of the modality 62 (28.05%) were located in the negative range. This demonstrates that students' enthusiasm to learn throughout the pandemic was characterized as medium and highly positive. The findings were relatively different from the previous research on the same topic. Most of the research revealed low student motivation amid the covid-19 pandemic. However, this research showed different results that the EFL students were still motivated to study their lessons amid the covid-19 pandemic. The results bring consequences to the future educational research to consider using linguistic perspectives in the research method, especially the application of Systemic Functional Linguistics to reveal the meanings of the students’ perspectives on certain educational issues.

Abstract

Many researchers have conducted regarding cultural analysis in English textbooks. However, the comparison between English Textbook as ESL and EFL used in Indonesia in term of cultural analysis is relatively unexplored. After addressing the gap, this study mainly focuses on investigating the cultural contents between Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 and Erlangga Grow with English Book. The data of the study were taken from the two books regarding the cultural dimensions. The theory of types of culture used is proposed by Hinkel (1999), namely source, target, and international culture. As for the theory of dimensions of culture, namely aesthetic, sociological, semantic, and pragmatic is taken from Adaskou, Britten and Fahsi. The findings reveal that Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 contained more cultural materials than Erlangga Grow with English Book 6. Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 contains more percentage or portion in culture types and dimensions which considers the importance of studying culture as a preparation for the learners to face intercultural communication in their future. This study contributes to a new perspective in the study of cultural dimension as well as a new horizon in a comparative study in ELT.

Abstract

This article describes the religious reality that appears in the movie “God's Not Dead” (2014). This article is the result of research qualitative with a discourse analysis approach of the model Teun-A-Van-Dijk. Film discourse alone is not enough to rely on text, because it consists of different structures and levels. The structures are macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The results of the study indicate that the preparation of the discourse is quite structured based on the thematic structure, schema, semantics, syntax, stylistics, and rhetoric. The macrostructure contains the subject structure, the super contains structure the structure schema, and the rest is contained in the microstructure. The two structural elements are true that this film lives in a very rational environment and although it does not include God in life, God still has a place in human life, indicating that there will be a message to be conveyed.
