Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan dalam menerapkan Reported speech. Subjek penelitian ini berjumlah 30 orang mahasiswa semester II Program Studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan. Peneliti menggunakan Metode Deskriptif Kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pemberian tes essay dan wawancara. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa kesalahan misformation merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan. Semua kesalahan dilakukan hingga 515 kesalahan dalam menerapkan pidato yang dilaporkan. Selanjutnya diikuti oleh kesalahan formasi dengan 336 (65, 24%) kesalahan, penghilangan dengan 116 (22, 53%) kesalahan, penambahan dengan 52 (10, 10%) kesalahan dan kesalahan dengan 11 (2, 13%) kesalahan. Rata-rata total untuk semua kesalahan adalah 85,83% mahasiswa yang melakukan kesalahan dalam menerapkan Reported speech. Setelah menganalisis data, penulis menemukan; Kesalahan yang sering dilakukan dalam menerapkan reported speech disebabkan karena tidak bisa menghafal aturan dalam reported speech terutama untuk urutan tenses dan pronoun dalam transformasi reported speech.

Abstract

This study deals with turn taking strategies. The study aims to investigate the types of turn taking strategies used by lecturers ans students, to find out how turn taking strategy realized and to identify the dominant types used by lecturers and students. This studey uses descriptive qualitative research design which employed two data collection techniques, i.e. observation and video recording. The number of data that containing types of turn taking strategy is 200 data. The data are, then, analyzed by using theory from Strenstrom (2001). Techniques of analyzing data is by classifying the data based on their types, then the data will be count in each category to make the analysis more comprehensive by knowing which category ranks the highest and vice versa. Finally the result will be put in findings. The results of the research indicates that: the dominant type used by lecturers in semantics class, kajian budaya and technology of translation, are prompting strategy, meanwhile in akustik dan organologi class, the lecturer used taking over and prompting strategy as the dominant types. Meanwhile the students used the same dominant types in four different class, they are taking over strategy. While the types that is not used at all in four different classes are the silent pause strategy and giving up strategy.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in 2020, teaching and studying activities commonly conducted in the classrooms were shifted to online, which caused students to adapt and accept without compromising. This study analyzed the dialogue texts expressing students' hopes and views about the future of learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic written by the Senior High School students of Nanyang Zhi Hui school in Medan, Sumatera Utara. The objectives are to analyze the mood, modality, and modality orientation types; and figure out the dominantly-applied mood, modality, and orientation types in the dialogue texts. This descriptive qualitative research applied the Mood and Modality theory by Halliday and other linguists. The study revealed that 1) three mood types: declarative, interrogative, and imperative, four types of modality: probability, usuality, obligation, and inclination range from low, median, and high degrees; four orientations: subjective-explicit, subjective-implicit, objective-explicit, and objective-implicit occurred in the texts; and 2) the clauses are represented through the extensive use of declarative mood (80,74%), median probability (47%), and implicitly objective modality orientation (45,15%). The study concludes that the students tend to give their insights using statements with median probability and orientation of objective-implicit in the dialogue, which shows a lack of confidence in the utterances.

Abstract

The research was conducted as a qualitative case study. The study's aims were to look into the types for codes and the reasons in the occurrence of code-mixing and code-switching. In this study, a teacher and 20 students of Junior High School students were the subjects. The information was gathered through observation, recording and interview. As the result of this research, the language function in code-mixing and code-switching found for interpersonal function in 42 cases in 56,75%. The least function of language found during the online interaction was personal function with 5 cases in 6,76%. Directive function found during the online interaction in Junior High School teacher-students in NGS is 17,57%. Meanwhile, referential function was highly used more than directive function in almost 19% detected. From the data, it was concluded that the speaker in the classroom tended to interact by using interjection in Bahasa Indonesia even though in the interaction of English Language. Based on the analysis, the types of code-mixing are elaborated into three categories, as follow: insertion (50%), alternation (28,57%) and congruent lexicalization (21,43%). On the other hand, there are three types of code-switching: tag switching (88,52%), inter sentential switching (9,84%) and intra sentential switching (1,67%). The reasons of using code-mixing and code-switching based on previous findings are talking about particular topic (21,43%), being emphatic (7,14%), intention for clarifying (35,71%) and lexical needed (35,71%). Meanwhile, based on the interview, the reasons of using code-mixing and code-switching is due to the environmental society impact which cause the language usage of the speakers.

Abstract

Listening is an important skill that should be mastered by the students in the classrooms since the skill involves a process of understanding spoken message. The pupose of this research is to identify the students’ ability in listening skill. The research was done through quasi experimental design. The population of the research was tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa which consisted of 150 students while the samples were class X-MIA1 as the experimental group A and X-MIA4 as the experimental group B which consisted 60 students. The data were taken by using instrument or test. After validating the test, the researcher gave the pre-test to both classes to examine the normality of the data. The students’ mean score result in pre-test of the experimental group A was 71.83 and for the experimental group B was 66.33. Both are categorized adequate. After giving the treatment, the researcher administered the post test in both of the classes to get the result of the treatment and to examine the result of the normality of the data and homogeneity. Based on the result of the data computation of experimental group A, the mean score was 82.16 and for the experimental B was 75.16 classified good. Based on the result of hypothesis by using t-independent, the researcher got tcount = 2.2435 ≥ ttable = 2.0115 with dk = 2(n-1) = 2(30-1) = 58 and the significance level is 5% (α = 0.05). It means, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Using Listen and Draw and Dictogloss Technique on the students’ listening skill at the Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa.

Abstract

The research on metadiscourse markers investigation in academic texts has grown very rapidly in the last decade. However, research on interactive metadiscourse markers on EFL students' academic writing is still relatively underexplored. Therefore, this study aims to reveal how the competence of EFL students in the use of interactive metadiscourse in academic writing by comparing two groups of students with different grades, third-semester students and fifth-semester students. The research design is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A total of 40 students were participating in this research and divided into two groups. Each group consists of 20 students. They were assigned to write a minimum-250-word essay about the importance of English mastery in the disrupted era of 4.0. Around 818 interactive markers were identified in the student’s essay texts. The results reveal that the use of interactive discourse markers in the students' writing was considered still low in quantity. The transition markers were the most dominant found in the text, followed by frame markers, code gloss, endophoric markers, and evidential respectively. Moreover, the students in the fifth semester perform slightly better than their third-semester counterparts at using the interactive metadiscourse markers. However, most of the students in both groups still encountered difficulties to employ the interactive markers in their writing. The lack of practice and the student's native language practice might have contributed to the low quality of the student's writing.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis majas (hiperbola, metafora, simbol, sinekdoke, paradoks, personifikasi, simile, ironi) dan menjelaskan makna majas yang digunakan dalam lirik lagu Novo Amor. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian diambil dari lagu Novo Amor yang masuk dalam album “Birthplace”: Emigrate, Utican, Anniversary, State Lines, Birthplace, Seneca, Sleepless, Repeat Hingga Death, Oh Round Lake. Teori majas yang digunakan dari X.J Kennedy, penulis melakukan observasi dengan mengamati lirik lagu Novo Amor dan mengambil kalimat yang mengandung majas. Dari hasil analisis, penulis menemukan bahwa majas yang digunakan dalam lagu-lagu Novo Amor sangat beragam. Ada 63 hiperbola 31 (49%), metafora 5 (7,9%), simbol 15 (23,8%), sinekdok 3 (4,7%), paradoks 6 (9,5%), personifikasi 1 (1,5%) ), simile 1 (1,5). %), ironi 1 (1,5%). Jenis majas yang paling dominan ditemukan dalam lagu Novo Amor adalah hiperbola 31 (49%).

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi, yaitu tindak direktif dan komisif dalam cerpen The Umbrella Man karya Roald Dahl. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori direktif dan komisif Searle (1979) yang membantu penulis untuk mengidentifikasi jenis tindak tutur direktif yang diucapkan oleh pembicara. Sebagai metode analisis data, penelitian ini menggunakan analisis transkrip percakapan yang mempertimbangkan tidak hanya ucapan tetapi juga tindakan yang terlibat di dalamnya. Hasil penelitian menemukan total 73 data direktif dan komisif. Ada 33 arahan, yaitu Memerintahkan 6 data (8,3%), Mengundang 2 data (2,7%), Melarang 1 data (1,3%), Meminta 2 data (2,7%), Menyarankan 2 data (2,7%), Mengizinkan 1 data ( 1,3%), Menanyakan 17 data (23,4%), Mengemis 2 data (2,7%). Sedangkan komisif terdapat 40 tuturan, yaitu Janji 3 data (4,2%), Tolak 5 data (6,9%), Ikrar 27 data (36,9%), Ancaman 3 data (4,2%), Tawarkan 2 data (2,7%). Jenis tindak ilokusi yang dominan dalam cerpen The Umbrella Man karya Roald Dahl adalah Commissive Pledge, yaitu sebanyak 27 data (36,9%). Ikrar komisif adalah tipe yang dominan karena dalam cerpen The Umbrella Man lebih banyak ungkapan untuk meyakinkan seseorang tentang sesuatu.

Abstract

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai pendidikan yang terkandung dalam film Eternals, serta untuk mengetahui bagaimana nilai-nilai pendidikan yang terkandung dalam film Eternals tersebut disampaikan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film Eternals mengandung nilai pendidikan yaitu: kejujuran (41%), berani (8%), percaya diri (7%), kemurnian (12%), kesetiaan (11%), rasa hormat (8%), cinta dan kasih sayang (10%), serta kebaikan dan keramahan (3%). Jenis nilai Edukasi yang paling dominan ditemukan dalam film Eternals adalah kejujuran (41%). Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa nilai pendidikan yang paling dominan dalam film adalah kejujuran, artinya kejujuran sangat dibutuhkan dalam film. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat banyak kesesuaian antara perkataan yang diucapkan dengan tindakan seseorang dimana kejujuran sangat penting untuk diterapkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, kejujuran sangat dominan untuk mendapatkan kepercayaan dari orang lain.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi gaya retorika dalam lirik lagu Avicii. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif karena menggunakan kalimat sebagai data yang diambil dari lagu-lagu Avicii. Teori yang digunakan untuk memenuhi tujuan penelitian ini yaitu teori dari Gorys Keraf (2006) mengklasifikasikan gaya retorika berdasarkan makna langsung dan tidak langsung, yaitu gaya retorika dimana retorika terdiri dari aliterasi, eufemisme, litotes, hiperbola, anastrofe, dan paradoks. Data penelitian ini diambil dari lirik lagu. Lirik lagu ini oleh produser musik elektronik Swedia Avicii. Selain itu, dengarkan lagu dan baca liriknya sambil mengidentifikasi kalimat yang mengandung retorika. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa enam jenis gaya retorika berdasarkan langsung dan tidak langsung yang terkandung dalam lirik lagu mengandung 0 (0%) litotes, 1 (4%) paradoks, 6 (22%) aliterasi, 0 (0%) eufemisme, 2 (7%) hiperbola, dan 19 (67%) anastrophe. Oleh karena itu dapat disimpulkan bahwa yang paling sering digunakan adalah anastrophe.
