In Four Square Writing, the means of scores were 66.25, 74.38, and 79.38. 2) Mind mapping and Four square Writing have contributed to the students’ motivation and enthusiasm in practicing English writing in classroom. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to elicit students' perceptions about the quality of English textbook used by Indonesian EFL students. Although numerous teaching researchers have undertaken research on textbooks, it is still uncommon to conduct textbook research to ascertain students' perceptions on the quality of textbooks. This study employed a mixed-methods approach and gathered data from 300 senior high school students in grade eleven. They were chosen at random among 674 students. These students come from SMA 12 Medan and SMK 3 Parulian Medan. Each school was represented by 150 students in the eleventh grade. Google forms were utilized to collect data. Simple statistics are used to calculate the number and percentage in research data analysis, while interactive data analysis is used to examine qualitative data. The results of this study show that the textbook "Bahasa Inggris" meets the criteria for a textbook of appropriate quality in terms of external appearance, content quality, language or vocabulary used, scoring system, and positive impact. However, the quality of the textbook's look and content may be enhanced. The findings of this study provide a unique viewpoint on the difficulties studied in comparison to earlier textbook research.

The research was engaged in a mixed method. The quantitative descriptive method was utilized to study the students’ perceptions on English tenses mastery to improve their English academic writing in numerical form and percentage. The qualitative method was focused on the reasons for the students’ low competence and their belief that English tenses mastery can lead to the quality of writing. The data collection used Google form in multiple-choice and short answer forms. A total of 59 EFL students of the English Department of Universitas HKBP Nommensen who took the Academic Writing course participated in this research. The results show that: (1) most of the EFL students were familiar with all the names of the English tenses with a total of 62.7% (37 out of 59 respondents); (2) the most number of students (54.2 respondents) can employ some of the tenses in writing; (3) The main reason for the EFL students is unable to apply English grammar, particularly English tenses in writing practice was due to the lack of students’ English grammatical competence; (4) around 88.1% of the respondents (52 students) believed that mastering English tenses was the key to improve their writing skill. Accordingly, the teachers need to provide an effective method to advance the students’ competence in the use of the English tense in writing. For the researchers, the research findings provide basic evidence to investigate the issues in the future.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in 2020, teaching and studying activities commonly conducted in the classrooms were shifted to online, which caused students to adapt and accept without compromising. This study analyzed the dialogue texts expressing students' hopes and views about the future of learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic written by the Senior High School students of Nanyang Zhi Hui school in Medan, Sumatera Utara. The objectives are to analyze the mood, modality, and modality orientation types; and figure out the dominantly-applied mood, modality, and orientation types in the dialogue texts. This descriptive qualitative research applied the Mood and Modality theory by Halliday and other linguists. The study revealed that 1) three mood types: declarative, interrogative, and imperative, four types of modality: probability, usuality, obligation, and inclination range from low, median, and high degrees; four orientations: subjective-explicit, subjective-implicit, objective-explicit, and objective-implicit occurred in the texts; and 2) the clauses are represented through the extensive use of declarative mood (80,74%), median probability (47%), and implicitly objective modality orientation (45,15%). The study concludes that the students tend to give their insights using statements with median probability and orientation of objective-implicit in the dialogue, which shows a lack of confidence in the utterances.
