Abstract

Many scholars have conducted research on error analysis in English writing. However, scientific research on errors in using English verbs in terms of tense and aspect is still in its early stages. As a result, the purpose of this study was to identify the errors or mistakes in sentence translation from Indonesian to English that were related to tense and aspects. 25 English department students sat in the English syntax class and translated 12 Indonesian sentences into English. The findings reveal a total of 126 errors in sentence translation in terms of tense and aspect. The past perfect continuous tense, past perfect tense, present perfect continuous tense, future perfect continuous tense, future perfect tense, and future continuous tense are the most common errors. These findings indicate that the students were unfamiliar with the formulas and functions of these tenses, as well as aspect interpretation. As a result, English lecturers/teachers should prioritize English tenses and aspects for EFL students from the start.

Abstract

Many scholars have conducted research on hate speech, spanning from hate speech delivery tactics to the negative consequences they create, as well as the role of technology in the dissemination of hate speech on social media. However, research on hate speech categories and degrees is still relatively unexplored. As a result, the purpose of this research is to uncover the strategies and levels of hate speech on social media, primarily YouTube channels, in response to the Minister of Religion's comments about the sound of mosque loudspeakers that need to be adjusted in volume. This comment has generated both positive and negative reactions in Indonesian society. This research looks into netizen comments in the comments column on the YouTube channel that carries the statement. Purposive sampling was used to select 300 comments from among the 840 comments in the comments column. For the purposes of this study, the sample was obtained in the form of comments containing hate speech. The data was then analyzed using content analysis, in which the data was categorized and categorized according to hate speech categories. According to the study's findings, there are three types of hate speech in netizen comments: early warning, dehumanization and demonization, and violence and incitement. Early warning is the most common type of hate speech, followed by violence and hostility, as well as dehumanization and demonization. Due to cultural influences and contrasts in rank and power between the commentator and the person who is the subject of the hate speech, hate speech delivered by Indonesian netizens tends to be dominated by disagreement, negative character, and action.

The FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the world, and its audience, which is divided into various regions and circles, has attracted researchers to make it an object. The aims of this semiotic analysis study are to determine the signifier and the signified, as well as the denotation and connotation, as well as the meaning of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 memes. The descriptive qualitative method is being used in the study. To analyze the data, the researchers applied Roland Barthes' theory. Memes are classified as signifiers and signified, which can be expressed verbally or visually. The researchers also explained the denotative and connotative interpretations of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The writers selected four memes for this analysis that talked about watching experiences, trolling the fans and players, and giving thoughts about the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar tournament. The results show that the signifiers in the memes were very random and unique, such as the heartbeat display in the first image, scientists in the second image, actors in the third image, scientists, and cartoon characters with flags in the last image. These signs certainly have objective or literal meanings (denotation) and subjective or other meanings (connotation).  Most of the connotational meaning from memes that have been analyzed focuses on sharing the experience of watching the FIFA World Cup 2022 competition and also trolling the football supporters or even the players that participated
