Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ physical fitness and social intelligence through the implementation of a hybrid model combining Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) and Fitness Education. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were 28 fifth-grade students at SDPN 252 Setiabudi. Each cycle consisted of three stages: two learning interventions and one evaluation. Instruments used in the study included the Indonesian Students' Physical Fitness Test (TKSI) and the Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS). The results showed that the hybrid TGFU and Fitness Education model progressively improved students’ physical fitness levels from lower to higher categories. In the pre-cycle stage, low categories such as "very poor" and "poor" comprised 40% of students, 46% were in the "moderate" category, 14% in the "good" category, and none in the "excellent" category. After the second cycle, only 4% of students remained in the low categories, 11% were in the "moderate" category, while the "good" and "excellent" categories increased to 46% and 43%, respectively. In terms of social intelligence, students initially already demonstrated relatively high levels. In the pre-cycle, no students were categorized as "very poor" or "poor", 25% were in the "fair" category, 75% in the "good" category, and none in the "excellent" category. By the end of the second cycle, the percentage of students in the "good" category rose to 79%, "excellent" to 14%, and "fair" decreased to only 7%. In conclusion, the hybrid model of TGFU and Fitness Education proved effective in enhancing both the physical fitness and social intelligence of elementary school students.

Abstract

One of the keys to successful learning model development is conducting a comprehensive needs analysis on actual performance, desired performance, and causes of performance gaps. This research aims to analyze student performance needs so that they can become a credible basis for consideration when designing the syntax of learning experiences for integrated learning models for micro-teaching courses. Researchers used an explanatory sequential design when completing the study, so quantitative research became the main focus for data collection and analysis, which was emphasized by qualitative studies. There were 107 research respondents, namely 75 students, two lecturers, and 30 physical education teachers. Data on actual performance, desired performance, and causes of performance gaps on the variables of teaching skills, analytical thinking skills, academic integrity, and transformational leadership were collected using 12 statements. Qualitative data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively and with Kruskal-Wallis to test differences in actual performance and desired performance of the three groups of respondents. Meanwhile, for qualitative data, researchers used thematic analysis. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test prove that there are no significant differences between the three groups of respondents in actual performance (0.365> 0.05) or desired performance (0.758> 0.05). Students, lecturers, and teachers agree that teaching skills, analytical thinking skills, academic integrity, and transformational leadership are important requirements in developing integrated learning models. Meanwhile, the causes of performance gaps are not limited to lack of training experience, lack of opportunity to analyze problems and make decisions, lack of role models, or lack of support from lecturers and colleagues in lectures. Thus, in developing the model, the performance tasks designed must be able to overcome this performance gap by increasing students' experience in operational and clinical exercises during lectures

Abstract

Background: Social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies are critical for children’s academic engagement and psychosocial well-being. Martial arts, which integrate structured practice, ethical instruction, and social interaction, are increasingly implemented in primary education; however, their effects on SEL outcomes in primary-school-aged children have not yet been systematically synthesized. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the effects of martial arts interventions on emotion regulation, executive function, and empathy among primary school children aged 6–12 years. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in Scopus, PubMed, SAGE Journals, SpringerLink, and Emerald Insight up to August 2025. Eligibility criteria were established using the PICOS framework. Nine empirical studies published between 2015 and 2025 were included. Study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment were independently performed by two reviewers using Covidence, with RoB 2 applied to randomized studies and the JBI checklist to non-randomized designs. Owing to methodological heterogeneity, findings were synthesized narratively. Findings/Results: School-based and curriculum-integrated martial arts interventions were associated with improvements in children’s emotion regulation, executive functioning, and empathy. Positive outcomes were most evident in programs incorporating structured practice, reflective or mindfulness-based activities, cooperative learning, and autonomy-supportive pedagogy. Effects varied according to program duration, instructional fidelity, and pedagogical design, with limited or inconsistent findings reported for short-term or extracurricular interventions lacking explicit socioemotional components. Conclusion: Martial arts can be an effective pedagogical approach for enhancing SEL-related psychosocial competencies in primary education when delivered through structured, value-based programs. Future studies should prioritize standardized curricula, robust experimental designs, and longitudinal follow-up to determine the sustainability of intervention effects.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of implementing the Team Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model, combined with an invasion game, on students’ levels of self-satisfaction and playing skills in physical education classes. The study employed a quasi-experimental approach using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design, involving 54 sixth-grade students from SD Negeri 065 Cihampelas in Bandung, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received TGT-model instruction through handball games over 12 sessions, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test to examine changes within groups and the Mann–Whitney U test to compare the two groups. The results of the Wilcoxon test indicated a significant increase between the pretest and posttest for both variables (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the results of the Mann–Whitney U test showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups on the variables of self-satisfaction (Z = -6.317; p < 0.001) and playing skills (Z = -6.372; p < 0.001). Additionally, the experimental group achieved an N-Gain score of 71.19% for self-satisfaction and 81.73% for playing skills, indicating an effectiveness level ranging from effective to highly effective. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Team Games Tournament model through the invasion game is effective in improving self-satisfaction and playing skills among elementary school students.
