Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a critical period of growth and development in which nutritional status and health behaviors play an important role in determining future health outcomes. Rapid lifestyle changes and increased consumption of packaged foods have contributed to rising nutritional problems among adolescents, including obesity and other non-communicable diseases. Understanding nutrition information on food labels is therefore essential to support healthy food choices and improve adolescents’ nutritional knowledge. Objective: Adolescents tend to consume packaged foods high in salt, sugar, and fat. One of the contributing factor is their low comprehension of the display of nutrition facts on the packaging and the habit of not reading them. Data from the Lampung Health Office show that the prevalence of obesity among school-aged children increased from 27% to 37% in 2021 and 2023. Reading nutrition facts is part of the Balanced Nutrition Guidelines. This study aims to analyze the effect of nutrition education using animated video media on knowledge and reading comprehension of nutrition facts on packaged foods among eight-grade adolescents at SMPN 2 Bukit Kemuning, Lampung Utara. Method: The study used a quantitative pre-experimental with a one-group pretest- posttest design. Nutrition education was delivered through animated video media, followed by measurement of knowledge and comprehension with a 14-days interval between the pretest and posttest. The study population consisted of 104 eight-grade students. Using a simple random sampling method, 84 samples were selected. However, the intervention was given to entire population to avoid sample loss, resulting in 85 samples collected. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T- Test. Result: The results showed a significant increase in the average score knowledge score from 64.05 to 89.07. And in reading comprehension from 59.34 to 85.53. Statitical tests showed a p-value <0.05 for both variables, indicating that nutrition education using animated video media had significant effect on improving adolescents knowledge and comprehension of reading nutrition facts.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive decline in kidney filtration function lasting more than three months, often with non-specific symptoms that allow the disease to advance unnoticed. Hemodialysis is the most widely used renal replacement therapy; however, patient adherence to fluid restriction remains a major challenge, as non-compliance can lead to fluid overload, edema, dyspnea, and increased mortality risk through elevated Inter-Dialytic Weight Gain (IDWG). Studies indicate that adherence to fluid restriction is associated with improved quality of life, with success strongly influenced by family support and the implementation of self-care practices including diet, medication, and physical activity. Video-based educational media has proven effective in enhancing patient knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, thereby promoting adherence to hemodialysis therapy and reducing long-term complications. Purpose: Increase patient understanding of the impact of excess fluid on the body and the serious complications that can occur if fluid restrictions are not adhered to. Method: This community service activity was conducted in a hemodialysis unit involving 68 patients with fluid overload, identified by significant inter-dialytic weight gain, edema, or hypertension. Samples were selected through observation based on weight gain criteria between sessions. An educational and participatory approach was applied, with fluid restriction education delivered via video displayed in the hemodialysis room, accompanied by interactive discussions. Patient engagement was observed to assess involvement and comprehension, while knowledge levels were evaluated through question-and-answer sessions and peer experience sharing. Results: The intervention demonstrated increased knowledge and active engagement among hemodialysis patients following video-based counseling. The visually and interactively packaged material effectively captured patient attention, while accompanying discussions reinforced understanding. Video-based educational interventions integrated knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors synergistically, supporting adherence to fluid restriction and improving the quality of hemodialysis therapy. Conclusion: Video-based health promotion is an effective educational tool to enhance patient adherence to fluid restriction in hemodialysis. Improved adherence positively impacts the control of Inter-Dialytic Weight Gain (IDWG), making video media a recommended component of routine educational strategies to support therapy success and patient quality of life. Suggestion: Health care facilities, particularly hemodialysis units, are advised to integrate video media into routine education to strengthen patient adherence to fluid restriction. Regular evaluation of adherence should involve family support to ensure a more comprehensive and sustainable educational process.
