Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of meaning in the discourse of Al Jazeera news entitled "Tala'ub bi-l-'admaghah wa-l-munākh wa-dh-dhakā' al-iṣṭinā'ī.. ' Ahlan bikum fī ḥurūb al-ghad" (Manipulation of the Brain, Climate, and Artificial Intelligence. Welcome to the War of the Future) – 17 November 2025, which represents the potential and evolution of modern warfare. Using a descriptive qualitative method with M.A.K. Halliday's social semiotic analysis framework, this study investigates how the media shapes public perceptions of the wars that humanity will face. The results of the analysis show that the field of discourse focuses on five main issues: the new phase of technology warfare, the cost efficiency of drone and satellite technology, Cognitive Warfare (brain fog), global trade inhibition, and Climate Engineering. The tenor of the discourse cited includes four speakers, namely anonymous officials, Stevan Audrand, Jerome Henry, and Olivier Blazy, who reinforce the authority of the narrative. In addition, the mode of discourse is used effectively through four visuals that clarify the news narrative. Overall, the study concludes that Al Jazeera not only provides information about the future forecasts of war, but also plays an important role in shaping public awareness of the continuation of global conflicts and promoting the value of military technological advances through a semiotic approach, confirming that warfare has transformed into the realm of artificial intelligence and environmental manipulation.

Abstract

The current events in Gaza, Palestine, are genocides that have claimed many lives. This triggered protests in various parts of the world. Various visual elements appeared, including the circulation of pro-Palestinian posters during the action. The poster is not only an ordinary publication medium, but it also conveys the anxiety of the Palestinian people and serves as a medium of emotional expression that reflects the community's feelings. This study analyzes the visual meaning, particularly in the symbols that represent the concept of anxiety, as depicted in the "قتال" poster on the official website of Brigadier Al Qassam, utilizing Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The method used in this study is qualitative. The results of this study identified five symbols that represent anxiety and convey mythical meanings, derived from a unified understanding of connotations and denotations obtained from several selected respondents. Additionally, the researcher analyzed the meaning conveyed by the poster's color symbols. The existence of this color symbol can enhance the symbolic and emotional message it conveys. It was found that 12 dominant colors were found on the poster; the colors used tended to be dark shades. This creates a gloomy atmosphere that reflects sadness, destruction, and disaster.

Abstract

The phenomenon of euphemism often appears in literary works; this element appears to prioritize aesthetic values and taste. Euphemism in literary works is also used as a rhetorical tool that functions to express meanings containing hidden intentions, both implicit and figurative. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to classify the types of euphemisms found in the novels The Thief and The Dogs and Thistle Flowers and to describe the patterns of euphemism in the novels in depicting crime. By using a descriptive qualitative approach with a stylistic analysis method, this study identified 64 euphemistic expressions in the novel The Thief and The Dogs by Najib Mahfouz and the novel Thistle Flowers by Muhammad Farid Abu Hadid, then analyzed using interactive qualitative analysis in the form of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Ten types of euphemisms were found in both novels, namely metaphor, understatement, hyperbole, one-to-one substitution, frivolity, general-to-specific, part-to-whole, simile, personification, and irony. The euphemism patterns of these two novels tend to differ in their narratives, which lie in aspects such as theme, euphemistic symbols used, narrative style, and story background. In addition to disguising the implied criminality, euphemism also serves to highlight the emotional side of the characters. This study contributes to Arabic literary stylistics by offering a comparative framework for analyzing euphemism and recommending further research on the role of euphemism in representing social and moral tensions in Arabic narrative fiction.
