Abstract

This study focused on the effect of self-assessment strategy on students’ writing recount text. The objective of this study was to know the effect of self-assessment on students’ writing recount text at eight grade. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the eight student of SMP Swasta Advent 5 Medan. Two classes were taken as the sample of this research. The class VIII-1 was as the experimental group and the class VIII-2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using self-assessment strategy, while the control group was taught by traditional teaching method. The instrument of collecting data was writing test and field note. The result of this study shows that the use of self-assessment strategy is effective for students in writing recount text. From the result, the students’ score of the experimental group in the post-test was higher than the students in the pre-test. The mean score of post-test in the experimental group 76.55 was higher than mean score of the control group 60.88. It was really good significant effect by using self-assessment strategy. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The data were collected by giving pre-test and post- test. After giving the treatment, the result of paired sample t-test, obtained that sig. (2-tailed) or the p value was 0.00 from the df 34 and the significance level (α) is 0.05. Since 0.00 is smaller than significance level (α) 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. In other word, the hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is smaller than before the treatment. It means that self-assessment strategy can be used as teaching approach alternative to enrich students writing at eight grade. Keywords: Self-Assessment Strategy, Recount text, Writing.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the forms and the roles of phatic communion employed by characters in the movie entitled Me Before You. This research used the pragmatic approach. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The dialogs containing the phatic communion were taken as data. The result of the analysis can be seen as follows: First, there are four forms of phatic communion employed by the characters in the movie entitled Me Before You, namely ritual words that are exchanged when people meet, standard topic of conversation, supportive chat and meaningless word or misunderstood words. The total number of forms of phatic communion are; Ritual words that are exchanged when people meet 3 utterances = 9.00%, Standard Topic of Conversation 11 utterances = 34.37%, Supportive Chat 14 utterances = 43.75%, Meaningless words or even misunderstood words 4 utterances = 12.88%. Second, there are three roles of phatic communion, namely opening phase, middle phase, closing phase. The total number of roles of phatic communion are; Opening phase 3 utterances = 60.00%, Middle phase 1 utterances = 20.00, and Closing phase 11 utterances = 20.00%. Phatic communion occurs both in formal or informal situation and the relationship between the participants can be intimate or distant. It can happen in both higher and lower status. The atmosphere is commonly good but if the atmosphere is bad, phatic communion utterances will help to turn into the good one. The attitude of the participants while uttering phatic communion utterances is usually sympathetic. It can be seen from the low tone. At last, phatic communion functions to establish and maintain social relationship between people in society. Keywords: Pragmatics, Phatic Communion, Me Before You movie.

Abstract

In this study, descriptive analysis was used as the method which focused on describing the students’ vocabulary mastery in using antonym. The data was taken from 25 students of the 2nd grade in SMP Swasta Advent 5 Medan. The study used content analysis as the instrument of collecting data. The result of this study shows that the level ability of students’ vocabulary mastery in using defining antonym was categorized as poor level. The percentage of the level ability of students’ vocabulary mastery in doing the antonym test shows that from 25 samples, there were 3/12 % students fall in the excellent level, 2/8 % students fall in the good level, 3/12 % students fall in the fair level, 6/24 % students fall in weak level, 11/44 % students fall in poor level which can be concluded as the most level reached by the students. The graphic clearly shows that most of the students’ vocabulary mastery fall in the poor level in using antonym. The result of students’ interview which involved 5 participants which aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary shows that most of students reciprocally mention that English is one of the most difficult subjects learnt at school. The lack of repetition by students was also one of the main reason of students limited vocabularies which lead to the result of poor level ability of students’ vocabulary mastery particularly in defining antonym. Abstract

In writing skills, learners would be able to put their feelings, ideas, arguments, willingness, and their minds into words, sentences, and even stories. The aims of this study are to identify the students’ grammatical, and mechanical errors, and dominant errors and to figure out the factors that caused the grammatical and mechanical errors made by first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya in writing recount text. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive text. The subject of research is first grade accounting of SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya and object was grammatical and mechanical errors. The samples in this study was be first-class accounting 24 students who are learning English subject at SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya. The result of this research based on grammatical errors was 141 errors, based on the mechanical error were 9 errors, the dominant error in writing recount text were misinformation 48%. Some factors that lead to the error because of limited of vocabulary, lack interest of learning English subject, and not mastering tenses, using of punctuation.
