Abstract

Visual cultural artifacts in Indonesia are abundant and spread throughout the region. These objects are visual riches that have not been widely studied. From visual culture researchers who are interested in local graphic design, what is called vernacular graphic design emerged. This research was conducted using a qualitative method of literature study to reveal a basic understanding of visual culture, vernacular design and vernacular graphic design. From the literature that has been collected, it turns out that the study of vernacular graphic design focuses on vernacular typography. There has been no study of vernacular illustration or photography, vernacular color composition and vernacular layout or further on the concept of vernacular design according to its creator. This gap is an opportunity for visual culture researchers to dig deeper into the concept of non-typographic vernacular graphic design elements.

Abstract

The creation of this graphic work considers the reciprocal relationship between art and the environment as well as its preservation with an Eco Art perspective. The creation of this Eco-Graphic work uses the Artistic Creation approach which includes experimentation, reflection, and formation (art structure). This Eco Graphic work is inspired by the stimulation of creating water, fire, wind and soil in Javanese philosophy which is then processed in such a way that it becomes a graphic art work in an eco art perspective. Through inner research or inner wandering, the creator is able to visualize the work of Eco Graphic after discovering triangles, circles and lines as the main motive with the abstract expressionism model.

Abstract

This creative research investigates photographic artworks by referring to Henri Cartier-Bresson's concept of the Decisive Moment. This artistic research aims to create a body of performing arts photography that transcends mere documentation, offering both aesthetic and reflective significance to spontaneously occurring sublime moments. The employed methodology is artistic research characterized by a conceptual framework, visual exploration, and art practices. The resultant work comprises a collection of documented photographs of dance performances captured during the World Dance Day event at Teater Besar ISI Surakarta, Taman Budaya Jawa Tengah, and Pura Mangkunegaran, which encapsulate peak emotional moments, body gestures, and the interplay of space and light, both intuitively and reflectively. This study is grounded in Gilles Deleuze's theory of sublime situations and M. Dwi Marianto's aesthetic insights, which inform the interpretation of artistic moments. The study's findings suggest that the Decisive Moment approach can enhance the documentation of the performing arts by providing a more deeper layer of visual interpretation. This research recommends an in-depth exploration of the interplay between artistic intuition and aesthetic awareness in the creation of performing arts photography.

Abstract

Sablon or screen printing has many functions and is usually more popular in the community for making t-shirts and banners and even batik cloth. The popularity of screen printing or screen printing, which is used by world-class artists, one of them Andy Warhol and also used by Marida Nasution, causes writers to feel inspired to work using this technique, because the technique is already popular in the community, making it easy to get tools and materials. To visualize this work, the author uses an art creation research methodology with an artistic creation process. The artistic creation process requires several stages to be passed, including experimentation, reflection and finally formation. The selection of these objects is indeed very interesting because these objects are increasingly disappearing in our lives. So that in this work, we try to marry or collaborate between modern art represented by graphic art with visual objects based on local wisdom that represent tradition. The paradigm of modern art with a touch of tradition as an effort to find the roots of the characteristics of Indonesia from year to year has begun to be explored by artists in Indonesia as an effort to find Indonesian cultural identity.Keyword: Sablon, Artistic Creative, Printmaking.

Abstract

Relief print is a printmaking technique that is quite well known among the public. Relief print is considered static. This creation research aims to produce novelty by combining wood waste, references/matrixes in woodcut and Aja Dumeh's Javanese philosophy with artistic creation process methods: experimentation, reflection and creation of works. The creation of this matrix or reference is expected to be able to combine wood waste, reference/matrix in Relief print with Aja Dumeh's Javanese philosophy so that the resulting work is able to campaign about the importance of protecting the environment and also preserving culture, especially Javanese culture, so that it is expected to be able to compete in the international world. The results of this creation research have creations and innovations in the form of references/matrixes used in woodcut which come from Javanese philosophy conceptually and wood waste materially

Abstract

Film Pink Pastel with visual documentation, animation and live action (called Trisikon; three situation and condition) is used in response to the dangerous phenomenon of ‘idam pica’ (pica cravings). The writer tried to make a film that is not a cliché, not just a play of dramaturgy, gesture, mimic, and exploratory dialogue from the actor himself. The author explored the visual (mise en scene) by dissecting cliches and not cliches artwork. All action ranging from phenomena, maternal ecstasy, to visual realization. It is intended to create random Audio visual spaces, chaotic, and broken. The combination of documentation, animation, and live action in this film is able to realize the Deleuze’s Logic Sensation theory, that there were two powers owned by chaos at the same time, destructive power, and life power. The modified form in the film Pink Pastel can help the filmmakers to open the possibility of wider cinema visual.

Abstract

Beauty plays a vital role in persuasive communication, encompassing values such as goodness, usefulness, splendor, comfort, novelty, and metaphorical strength. This study aimed to reinterpret figures of Jesus and Mary through visual language of Balinese wayang, integrating traditional Balinese cultural values. Western visual portrayals often dominate depictions of these Biblical figures, making them appear generic and less engaging to contemporary audiences. Using a qualitative method, with Bishop Robert Barron’s research synthesis of Aristotle, Aquinas, and Balthasar aesthetic, which emphasizes evangelization through beauty. The concept of beauty is explored and expanded toward goodness and truth. Visual designs were developed through literature on Christian philosophy and interviews with Balinese dalang, artisans, Christian writers, and Catholic priests. The study faced challenges in balancing theological reverence with cultural adaptation, which were addressed through contextual design exploration. The outcome is a new form of visual metaphor of Jesus and Mary in Balinese wayang style that reflects both spiritual depth and local aesthetic sensibility, offering a fresh model of religious visual acculturation.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the increasing degradation of coral reef ecosystems in the Karimunjawa Islands caused by unsustainable tourism practices and low ecological awareness of the community and tourists. In response to these conditions, this study utilizes painting as a medium for ecological criticism that not only conveys aesthetic value, but also contains educational and communicative messages about the marine environmental crisis. The main findings show that coral reef damage, especially in the Menjangan Kecil Island area, has experienced a significant escalation. This was revealed through field observations, interviews with local communities, and visual documentation. The forms of damage identified include coral bleaching, physical damage due to direct interaction with tourists, vandalism, and pollution from domestic waste and tourism. Through an artistic approach, the researcher translates these ecological issues into works of art that are full of symbolism and social criticism. These works act as a reflective medium that arouses public ecological awareness and builds a visual narrative about the importance of marine conservation. The contribution of this research is theoretical and practical. Theoretically, this study expands the discourse of fine art by integrating the perspective of ecological criticism into artistic practice. Practically, the results of this study can be used as an effective visual campaign media in increasing environmental literacy, especially in coastal areas and natural tourism destinations. Thus, painting has proven to have the potential as a strategic means of voicing environmental issues as well as being an alternative approach in marine ecosystem conservation efforts. This study encourages cross-field collaboration between artists, academics, and policy makers to build collective awareness of the importance of coastal environmental sustainability, especially in Karimunjawa and other similar areas in Indonesia.
