Abstract

Abstract

Bohar Village is a DHF endemic village with data from the last 3 years showed an increasing number of cases. In 2020 there were 6 cases, in 2021 there were 8 cases and in 2022 there were 12 cases. The incidence of DHF cases is actually found more in residential locations. Indications that people who do not know the bionomics/behavior of the Aedes mosquito vector and inappropriate control methods make DHF cases still occured in Bohar Village. Efforts are needed from the village government and the cooperation of local health facilities to establish larva monitors and improve their knowledge in controlling vectors so that dengue cases can be controlled. The purpose of this activity is to provide counseling to larva monitors related to bionomics and efforts to control DHF vectors. Methods of counseling on bionomics and mosquito habits as well as mosquito larvae control practices were used in this community service. The targets of community service are people who have been appointed by the Bohar Village government to become larva monitors. In the implementation of community service, the targets followed enthusiastically until the event ended. The target has been able to answer questions as evidence of understanding of the material on the habitual behavior of the Aedes mosquito and its control efforts. The follow-up of this community service is an evaluation of the effectiveness of vector control on the incidence of dengue cases in Bohar Village.

Abstract

In conclusion, workers at the Tropodo tofu factory are exposed to high levels of PM2.5, which may contribute to decreased lung function, particularly among older workers. Continuous air quality monitoring and engineering control measures are recommended to reduce occupational exposure and protect worker health. The tofu industry is a sector that potentially generates fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution, which can reduce workers’ lung function. Exposure to PM2.5 in the workplace is a significant issue due to its direct impact on respiratory health. This study aims to analyze the risk of PM2.5 exposure and worker characteristics on lung function at the Tropodo Tofu Factory, Sidoarjo. This research used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 20 workers selected based on inclusion criteria. PM2.5 concentrations were measured using a Dust Particle Counter TC-8200 PM2.5, while lung function was tested using spirometry and questionnaires on smoking habits and age. Data were analyzed using univariate and correlation analyses. The results showed an average PM2.5 concentration of 288 µg/m³, exceeding the national ambient air quality standard (55 µg/m³). The mean FEV1 value indicated a moderate decline in lung function. A significant correlation was found between PM2.5 exposure and workers’ age with lung function. In conclusion, PM2.5 exposure in tofu production environments poses health risks to workers’ respiratory function. It is recommended that the factory increase the use of personal protective equipment and adopt cleaner combustion technologies to reduce PM2.5 emissions.

Abstract

In hospitals, vector and disease-carrying animal control is very important because interaction between healthy and sick patients increases the risk of disease transmission. A preliminary study at RSI Jemursari showed that several types of vectors and disease-carrying animals were still found, along with several complaints related to their presence. This study aims to analyze the density of vectors and disease-carrying animals in hospitals. This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach over a specific period. The sample in this study includes mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and rats in inpatient areas with complaints, nutrition facilities, domestic waste and hazardous waste (B3) disposal sites, gardens, and canteens/cafés. Data were collected through observation, measurement, and interviews with pest control and sanitation staff at the hospital, then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the fly population index in the nutrition unit, hazardous waste disposal site, and cafeteria/café met the criteria, but the domestic waste disposal site did not meet the criteria. Mosquito density based on habitat population index and container index met the criteria, but larvae were still found in the landfill outside the hospital building. The cockroach population index met the criteria, while rat density based on success traps did not meet the criteria. Overall, the control strategy at RSI Jemursari is in the good category, but it needs to be strengthened with monitoring of the environment outside the building, optimization of drainage, improvement of sanitation in storage areas, and environment-based vector control to create a healthier environment for patients, medical and non-medical staff, and hospital visitors.

Abstract

Avocado leaves contain various compounds that are proven to cause death in Aedes aegypti larvae. In its use has limitations, namely the nature of the extract tends to cause turbidity in water, thus inhibiting the survival of Aedes aegypti larvae. In contrast to Aedes aegypti larvae, Culex sp larvae can live and develop well in dirty water. This study aims to assess the potential of avocado (Persea americana) leaf juice as a biolarvicide of Culex sp. The treatment consisted of five groups of avocado leaf juice concentrations, namely 0% (negative control), 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Each using 20 Culex quenquefasciatus instar III larvae with replication 6 times. Mortality data of Culex sp larvae exposed to avocado leaf juice for 24 hours were analyzed using Anova test, Bonferroni test, and Probit test. The results showed that the mortality rate of larvae was 12,5%, 25%, 72,5%, and 92,5%, respectively. The Anova test showed that there was a significant difference between the concentrations of avocado leaf juice (p=0.000), the Bonferroni test showed that only the negative control (0%) and the 2.5% concentration, as well as the 2.5% and 5% concentrations, were not significantly different. The LC50 value obtained is 2.338%. It was concluded that avocado leaf juice has the potential as a biolarvicide against Culex sp.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an infectious disease that poses a public health problem in tropical regions and is influenced by climatic factors such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, and wind speed. In 2023, Malang Regency recorded 1,018 cases with an incidence rate (IR) of 38.2 per 100,000 population. This study aims to analyze the relationship between climatic factors and the DF IR for the 2022–2024 period using an ecological design and Spearman’s correlation analysis. Climate data were obtained from the BMKG, while DF data were obtained from the Health Office. The results showed that only air temperature was significantly associated (p = 0.032), while rainfall, humidity, and wind speed showed no significant association (p > 0.05). Temperature can serve as an early warning indicator. High temperatures should be prioritized as the optimal time for implementing control activities, such as community education and intensive Mosquito Larval Control (PSN).
