Abstract

Nonverbal communication is a way for humans to communicate without using language aspects. To communicate nonverbally, a person can use two channels, namely the visible channel and the paralingual channel. Nonverbal behavior in an interaction always communicates something. Even though when we meet new people we will communicate verbally, we need to realize that non-verbal communication also occurs and continues along with verbal communication. Even small things like eye movements, facial expressions, clothing, and body movements still influence other people's perceptions of us. First impressions and nonverbal communication are closely related in building other people's perceptions of us and also our perceptions of other people. The research was carried out using the literature study method. A literature review was used to collect data and information related to nonverbal communication and its influence on first impression formation. This research discusses the definition of nonverbal communication, theories of first impression formation, and the relationship

Abstract

Abstract

Song lyrics are not merely a sequence of words to be sung, but texts that convey values, situations, and emotional messages through figurative language such as metaphor, symbolism, hyperbole, and personification. Listeners actively construct meaning based on their experiences, emotions, and backgrounds, making interpretation subjective and personal. Therefore, this study focuses on two songs that feature the flower symbol in their lyrics, namely Bunga Maaf by The Lantis and Bunga Abadi by Rio Clappy, to describe how university students and YouTube netizens interpret the symbolic meaning of flowers within both songs. This study employs the theory of literary pragmatics, which emphasizes the role of the audience as meaning-makers, showing that a song only becomes meaningful when responded to by its listeners. The analysis also incorporates the concept of symbols, the perspective that considers songs as a form of literary work, and emotional classifications reflected in the lyrics to strengthen the interpretation process. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through YouTube comments, semi-structured interviews with students, and note-taking related to statements from the songwriters about the intended meaning of their songs. The findings are presented by linking the interpreted meanings with relevant theoretical frameworks to explain how symbolic representation and emotional elements shape the relationship between the singer, the text, and the audience. The results indicate that in Bunga Maaf, flowers symbolize regret, longing, and the desire to correct past mistakes, while in Bunga Abadi, they represent sincerity and everlasting love. These variations in interpretation highlight the influence of each listener’s emotional involvement and personal experience in constructing meaning.

Abstract

Lohidu is an oral literature in the form of pantun in the Gorontalo language that is usually sung in various places, such as in rice fields, at sea, in gardens, on lakes, or in certain traditional events. This study aims to describe the denotative and connotative meanings in the oral literature of lohidu in the community in Tilamuta District, Boalemo Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The research data are in the form of lines and stanzas of lohidu that contain denotative and connotative meanings. The data source is the community in Tilamuta District, Boalemo Regency. Data collection techniques are observation, recording, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis techniques are data transcription, data translation, identifying denotative and connotative meanings, presenting data, and concluding the research results. The results of the study indicate that the denotative meaning in Lohidu oral literature is found in words that refer directly to the literal and objective meaning of the word. The denotative meaning of Lohidu oral literature is found in the use of nouns, verbs, and adjectives to describe an event. For example, the word talohutu describes a person making something and the word ito’olo describes a number of people who are more than one. Meanwhile, the connotative meaning in Lohidu oral literature contains criticism of deviant behavior and life advice, such as religious negligence, arrogance, infidelity, and respect for parents.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of polysemy (nouns, verbs, adjectives) in political news of LKBN Antara Gorontalo Bureau, describe its function in journalistic discourse, and reveal the nature of polysemy meaning as a relationship between lexical and contextual meaning in the Gorontalo election discourse community for the 2024-2025 period. Using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach with semantics, data was taken from 20 political news scripts on antaranews.com/gorontalo (November 2024-May 2025) covering the issues of the North Gorontalo PSU, election lawsuits, money politics, grant budgets, and election law enforcement. Data analysis follows the Miles & Huberman model with a semantic theory foundation. The results of the study identified 81 polysemy data with an unequal distribution: dominant nouns (68 data) such as “decision”, “stages”, “grant”, “lawsuit”, “rights”; verbs (11 data) such as “title”, “release”, “upload”; and adjectives only 2 data (“conducive”, “heavy”). These words undergo expansion, specialization, and transference of meanings typical of institutional election discourse. The function of polysemy encompasses three layers: linguistic economy and referential precision, subtle expressive-persuasiveness without violating neutrality, and educational-contextuality that activates readers’ knowledge of election regulations. The essence of its meaning consists of general lexical meaning and specific contextual meaning active in the election community. Polysemy is not ambiguity, but rather a systematic and efficient linguistic strategy for conveying complex information while maintaining journalistic objectivity. These findings confirm polysemy as a characteristic of regional election discourse and a potential teaching material for semantic learning, media literacy, and civic education.

Abstract

This study addresses the low reading interest among elementary school students by integrating picture storybooks into drama activities. The research aims to explore strategies for implementing picture storybook literacy through dramatization and to examine students’ responses to this approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study was conducted with fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kedungsari. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, and teacher reflection, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that the implementation process consists of three stages: preparation, dramatization, and reflection. In the preparation stage, teachers selected age-appropriate picture storybooks and facilitated shared reading sessions to stimulate imagination and comprehension. During dramatization, students adapted the stories into simple scripts and performed them in groups, enhancing verbal expression, creativity, and collaboration. The reflection stage allowed students to discuss moral values and learning experiences, reinforcing comprehension and metacognitive awareness. Results show that students demonstrated high enthusiasm, improved understanding of narrative texts, effective teamwork, and increased confidence in verbal and nonverbal expression. The integration of picture storybook literacy with drama not only strengthened reading skills but also fostered social interaction, empathy, and critical thinking. Overall, this approach proved effective in creating an engaging and meaningful literacy experience, supporting the development of 21st-century skills in elementary education.
