Abstract

This online training on writing thesis proposals is intended for students of Universitas Negeri Makassar, Postgraduate Masters Program to overcome academic challenges in preparing proposals, such as difficulties in formulating research problems, managing references, and meeting methodological standards. Through a structured online training method including needs analysis, distribution of interactive materials, scheduled training, formative evaluation, and individual mentoring, this activity succeeded in significantly improving participants' competencies. The results showed an increase in understanding of proposal components by 35% (average quiz score rose from 55 to 82), mastery of methodology (78% of participants were more confident), as well as increased motivation (45% to 78%) and successful submission of draft proposals (>70% approved with minor revisions). The flexibility of online learning and the scaffolding approach are key to its effectiveness, although technical challenges such as internet connectivity need to be anticipated. This training proves that technology integration in academic mentoring can be a strategic model for the quality of postgraduate research.

Abstract

One of the tasks of community service is to increase the Literacy of Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy to the Residents of DKI Jakarta, where the policy holders certainly want excellent service both in acceptance and claims. This community service activity is based on Increasing Literacy of Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy to the Residents of DKI Jakarta in order to Increase Awareness, Duty Utmost Good Faith, Excellent Service to Insurance Policy Holders. Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy holders face great challenges when driving in DKI Jakarta and its surrounding areas which are often congested and dense. So the potential for friction, collisions, and traffic accidents is quite high. Until 2023 the number of two-wheeled motorized vehicles in DKI Jakarta is 18.22 million units, while the number of four-wheeled motorized vehicles is 3.83 million units. (BPS DKI Jakarta, 2024). Therefore, it is very important for policyholders to know the terms and conditions of the policy, their rights and obligations at the time of closing and when a claim occurs due to friction, collision or traffic accident. So Increasing Literacy of Insurance Policy to the Residents of DKI Jakarta is appropriate, because Residents who own motorized vehicles are the driving force of company/institution operations where security and protection guarantees for their vehicles are very important. The implementation method was carried out by inviting approximately 200 DKI Jakarta residents who own policies/motor vehicle owners to a community service event at the Pertamina University Auditorium, where the resource person delivered material explaining the understanding of the policy contents. Next, a question and answer session, a quiz with prizes, and participant feedback were conducted, which resulted in a lot of enthusiasm among the audience. The conclusion is that the method for increasing motor vehicle policy literacy can be done through socialization/counseling together with a fairly high frequency.   Keywords : policy literacy, policy holder, Motor Vehicle (KBM) policy

Abstract

The objectives of this study are 1) to find out how U-shaped seating arrangements can enhance collaborative learning, 2) to find out how teachers perceive U-shaped seating arrangements in enhancing collaborative learning. This study was motivated by the fact that many teachers still use traditional seating arrangements, which make learning monotonous and ineffective due to the lack of innovation in classroom management. This study is a qualitative descriptive study with data collection techniques in the form of observation using field notes and interviews. The participants in this study were students in grades IX A and IX B and two English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Barombong, who were selected using purposive sampling. Observations were conducted in grades IX A and IX B to explore how U-shaped seating arrangements could enhance collaborative learning. The results of the observation showed that U-shaped seating arrangements can enhance collaborative learning because they facilitate interaction between students, help teachers monitor individual responsibilities, support the development of communication skills through open discussion, and create space for students to share knowledge more easily. In addition, this layout also makes it easier for teachers to act as mediators in classroom interactions, even though it still presents some challenges in its implementation. The interviews with two English teachers showed that teachers perceive the U-shaped seating arrangement as facilitating student interaction and engagement, encouraging the development of communication skills in collaborative learning, helping teachers control the class and student performance, and making it easier for students to share knowledge. However, teachers also acknowledged the challenges in implementing this model and provided solutions to overcome them. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that U-shaped seating arrangements can enhance collaborative learning while providing opportunities and challenges for teachers in classroom management. These findings emphasize the importance of classroom physical design as a classroom management strategy to create more effective collaborative learning.

Abstract

This study explores the effect of applying effective questioning types on university students’ critical reading skills. Many students in higher education face challenges when engaging with academic texts, often limiting their efforts to surface comprehension rather than deeper analysis. To address this issue, the study implemented a framework of questioning—analytical, evaluative, interpretive, inferential, and synthetic—designed to promote higher-order thinking. A pre-experimental design was employed using a one-group pre-test and post-test format with 45 undergraduate students from English Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Literature Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. Over four sessions, students were guided through structured questioning activities aimed at encouraging deeper engagement with reading materials. Data were collected using essay-based critical reading tests, and scores were verified by two independent raters to ensure reliability. Findings indicated a significant improvement in students’ performance, with mean scores rising from 61.8 on the pre-test to 72.4 on the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test (Z = -5.037, p < .001) confirmed that this improvement was statistically significant. The results suggest that structured questioning fosters analytical, interpretive, and evaluative engagement with texts, thereby bridging the gap between comprehension and critical literacy. The study contributes to reading pedagogy by demonstrating the role of questioning in cultivating reflective and independent readers at the university level. It recommends that lecturers integrate varied questioning strategies into reading instruction to strengthen students’ academic literacy and prepare them for the demands of higher education.

Abstract

This study investigates academic stress among students of the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI), Makassar, South Sulawesi. The objectives were: (1) to identify the main sources of academic stress, (2) to analyze internal and external contributing factors, and (3) to examine coping mechanisms employed by students across different semesters. A qualitative case study approach was applied, using semi-structured interviews as the primary instrument, followed by thematic analysis of responses from first, third, and seventh semester students. Findings revealed that stress evolves with academic progression: first-semester students experienced adjustment-related stress, third-semester students reported performance pressure and fear of failure, and seventh semester students faced graduation-related stress. Contributing factors included self-expectation, low self-efficacy, poor time management, family expectations, peer competition, and language challenges, while institutional factors were less significant. Coping mechanisms varied across semesters, ranging from personal relaxation, hobbies, and prayer to peer collaboration and institutional support, with clear gender differences in coping preferences. The study concludes that academic stress at Universitas Muslim Indonesia is dynamic and culturally embedded. It recommends semester-specific and gender-sensitive interventions, including strengthening self-efficacy, promoting adaptive coping strategies, enhancing family engagement, and providing institutional support to foster resilience and student well-being.
