Abstract

This community service activity aims to raise awareness and foster a culture of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) among workers in the palm oil plantation sector. The program was implemented at PT X, South Kalimantan, targeting field workers in high-risk units. The implementation method employed an interactive and applied educational approach through five stages: preparation, pre-test, educational intervention, post-test, and evaluation. The training was delivered face-to-face through lectures, discussions, and Q&A sessions. The evaluation used pre-and post-test questionnaires to assess participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding OSH. The results showed an increase in the average score from 75.47 to 82.97, with 71.8% of participants showing improvement. However, 21.8% experienced a decrease in scores, indicating a persistent knowledge-behavior gap influenced by limited education and inaccurate perceptions. Follow-up training is needed using contextual approaches and simple, easy-to-understand educational media. Company management is also encouraged to act actively as role models in fostering a sustainable workplace safety culture.

Abstract

Abstract

Background:  Kalimantan remains malaria-endemic, particularly in rural areas, where prevention efforts face challenges such as insecticide resistance and limited healthcare access. Despite available measures like insecticide-treated nets, gaps in understanding individual and household prevention practices persist, especially in relation to demographics and effectiveness in reducing malaria transmission.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the individual and household-level malaria prevention strategies utilized in rural Kalimantan and evaluate their effectiveness in reducing malaria incidence. Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of the 2018 Indonesian basic health research (Riskesdas). A total of 67,155 respondents in Kalimantan were analyzed including respondent characteristics, memories of malaria infection, and individual and household malaria prevention efforts. The data were collected through the result of the 2018 Riskesdas survey. Bivariate regression and multivariable logistic regression were used in data analysis. Results:  Self-reported malaria rates were higher among older respondents compared to younger ones. Women reported lower malaria rates than men, especially in South Kalimantan. In West Kalimantan, the use of bed nets was associated with higher self-reported malaria rates (OR=1.838, 95%CI 1.147–2.943). Short-term use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) showed varying odds across provinces: Central Kalimantan (OR=3.659, 95%CI 1.378–9.717), South Kalimantan (OR=10.811, 95%CI 3.649–32.030), East Kalimantan (OR=2.615, 95%CI 1.041–6.567), and West Kalimantan (OR=2.428, 95%CI 1.446–4.078). In all provinces, preventive measures such as coils or electric mats reduced self-reported malaria cases. The use of mosquito screens was effective in South Kalimantan (OR=0.208, 95%CI 0.027–1.598), Central Kalimantan (OR=0.365, 95%CI 0.120–2.181), and North Kalimantan (OR=0.000, 95%CI 0.000–0.000). The multivariate model highlighted mosquito nets as the most effective household-scale prevention in nearly all Kalimantan provinces except North Kalimantan. Conclusion:  This study showed that individuals aged 25 and over, women, non-farmers, and those using ITNs and other preventive measures, especially in rural areas, were less likely to report malaria, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions from local health authorities.

Abstract

Bapidara is a technique of traditional medicine originating from the Banjar tribe in South Kalimantan, used to treat kapidaraan disease. The Bapidara tradition refers to the medicine of the Dayak Meratus people, which has been influenced by Islam. Bapidara involves the use of turmeric, limewater, and verses of the Qur'an. Kapidaraan is a fever disease believed to be caused by supernatural powers and generally affects children. This research is a qualitative study with a phenomenological design conducted in Tanjung Rema Village, Banjar Regency. Informants consisted of Gen-Z teenagers, Bapidara practitioners, and community representatives. The results show that Gen-Z has varied views towards the Bapidara tradition, some are skeptical, while others try to maintain the tradition and promote it. Bapidara practitioners explained the differences in the processes and ingredients used and highlighted the importance of preserving this tradition through descendants who inherit the knowledge. This research has theoretical and practical value in preserving Banjar Tribe culture and understanding Generation Z's views on the Bapidara tradition. In addition, the results of this study can provide insight into the factors that influence the understanding and appreciation of this tradition, and potentially support efforts to preserve the Bapidara tradition in the modern era.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in adolescent girls is a global and national public health problem that is receiving increasing attention due to the high nutritional needs during growth and iron loss during menstruation. Preliminary data from wetland areas, particularly in Sungai Alang Village, Banjar Regency, shows a prevalence of anemia of 23.54%. This study aims to analyze risk factors associated with anemia in adolescent girls, including age, education level, nutritional knowledge, dietary behavior, and nutritional status based on Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Method: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach in 50 adolescent girls aged 12–24 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained through questionnaires and hemoglobin level measurements using an Hb meter. Analysis was performed using Spearman's rho correlation test and multivariate linear regression. Result: The results showed a prevalence of anemia of 34%, exceeding the threshold for a moderate public health problem according to the WHO. Bivariate analysis found a significant negative correlation between age and Hb levels (r=-0.405; p=0.004) and a significant positive correlation between MUAC and Hb levels (r=0.373; p=0.008). Meanwhile, knowledge, BMI, and dietary behavior did not show a significant correlation. Multivariate analysis identified age (β=-0.459; p=0.000), MUAC (β=0.599; p=0.000), and BMI (β=-0.354; p=0.033) as significant independent predictors. Conclusion: The results confirmed that anemia in adolescent girls is influenced by physiological factors and anthropometric status, while knowledge and dietary behavior do not play a direct role. Therefore, preventive interventions need to be carried out holistically through supplementation, targeted nutrition education, and other supporting health programs.
