Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types and the factor influence of deixis found in the Elemental movie. The study applies Levinson’s theory of deixis, which classifies deixis into five categories: person, time, place (location), discourse, and social deixis. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data are collected from the movie script of Elemental Movie (2023), focusing only on the characters’ spoken dialogues. Each deictic expression found in the script was identified, categorized, and analyzed based on Levinson’s Theory. The first findings show that a total of 320 deixis were found in the movie, consisting of 191 person deixis, 37 time deixis, 45 place deixis, 26 discourse deixis, and 21 social deixis. Person deixis is the most dominant, indicating that personal relationships and speaker-hearer references play a central role in the film. Second findings, the study identifies several contextual factors that influence deixis usage, including participant roles, usage function, levels of intimacy, formality/informality, and social status. These factors contribute to how deixis is used to reflect dynamics, emotional expressions, and narrative flow within movie.

Abstract

Arabic reading (maharotul qira’ah) is an essential skill that often poses a challenge for learners, given the complexity of Arabic vocabulary, phonology, and grammatical structures. The urgency of mastering this skill is exacerbated by various internal and external barriers, such as pronunciation difficulties, lack of motivation, and limited environmental support. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of technology-based maharotul qira’ah learning methods, specifically the use of the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Wordwall platform. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through error analysis of midterm exam results and observed student performance development until the final semester exam. The results show that the use of Wordwall has a significant positive impact on reducing reading errors and improving student learning outcomes. This platform not only facilitates a more interactive and adaptive learning process but also overcomes various learning barriers. In conclusion, the integration of AI into Arabic reading learning methods can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of mastering maharotul qira’ah. This study recommends further development for widespread implementation in both formal and non-formal educational environments.

Abstract

Abstract

Reading interest is a foundational element of literacy success among elementary school students, yet its cultivation in classrooms is often constrained by limited access to reading materials. This study analyzes the implementation of a classroom reading corner (pojok baca) in fostering fifth-grade students’ reading interest at SDN 116 Percontohan and identifies its supporting and inhibiting factors. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving 21 fifth-grade students (14 boys, 7 girls), a homeroom teacher, and a school principal as informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, validated through method triangulation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results show that the implementation of the reading corner took place through six interrelated aspects: provision of the reading corner, availability of facilities and book collections, implementation of the literacy program, utilization in the learning process, teacher motivation, and independent use by students. Supporting factors included principal support, active teacher involvement, adequate facilities, student enthusiasm, and ease of access, while limited book collections and suboptimal supervision were the main obstacles. These findings extend prior research by showing that the success of reading corners depends more on institutional synergy than on the availability of physical facilities alone. The findings imply that, at the basic-education level, cultivating reading interest requires schools and teachers to treat the reading corner not as a facility to be provided once but as a pedagogical practice to be actively managed: for teachers, this means embedding guided reading routines into daily instruction, and for schools, aligning budgeting and supervision policies so that collections stay fresh and the corner is consistently used. Accordingly, this study recommends strengthening book-procurement budgets and establishing a rotating literacy-duty supervision system, and it invites future research to examine how such institutional synergy shapes students’ long-term reading behaviour.

Abstract

Background: This study examines the cognitive processes and self-reflective practices underlying translation decision-making among sixth-semester student translators when translating paratextual elements of Indonesian online historical magazine articles from Historia.id into English. Aims: It investigates how students with different levels of translation and analytical ability identify problems, evaluate alternatives, reflect on their choices, and revise their translations. Methods: Employing a qualitative descriptive design through a classroom-based field study, the research was conducted over four weeks at STAIN Mandailing Natal during the 2025/2026 academic year. Twenty students who had completed two semesters of Translation coursework were classified through a baseline diagnostic task into high-ability (n = 8), medium-ability (n = 6), and low-ability (n = 6) groups. Data were collected through draft and final translations, translation logs, revision records, retrospective annotated translations, reflective journals, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations, and were analyzed thematically using cross-group comparison. Results: The findings demonstrate that translating historical paratexts involves a recursive cognitive process comprising problem identification, contextual knowledge activation, alternative generation, functional evaluation, and revision. Self-reflection emerged as a key factor distinguishing decision-making quality across ability groups. High-ability students generated multiple alternatives, activated extensive historical knowledge, and revised deliberately; medium-ability students identified problems but generated fewer alternatives and revised reactively; while low-ability students frequently overlooked paratextual problems, relied on literal transfer, and revised superficially. Implications: The study concludes that reflective and context-sensitive decision-making is central to developing translation competence in historical paratexts. It highlights the need for differentiated and scaffolded pedagogy that strengthens problem identification, contextual reasoning, alternative generation, and reflective revision.
