Abstract

Critical thinking ability is one of the important competencies that need to be developed in science learning. However, learning that is still dominated by conventional methods causes students' critical thinking abilities to not develop optimally. This study aims to determine the differences in the effects of Problem Based Learning (PBL), Project Based Learning (PjBL), and conventional models on students' critical thinking abilities in science learning for grade VII at SMP Negeri 01 Lebong. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a Pre-Test Post-Test Control Group Design. The research sample was taken using a simple random sampling technique consisting of two experimental classes using the PBL and PjBL models and one control class using the conventional model. Data collection was carried out using an essay test to measure students' critical thinking abilities. Data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. The results of the study showed a significant difference in students' critical thinking abilities in the three treatment classes. The Project Based Learning (PjBL) model was proven to be more effective in improving students' critical thinking abilities compared to the PBL and conventional models.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the lack of science practicum guides on the respiratory system that are systematically integrated with Project-Based Learning (PjBL) to enhance junior high school students’ critical thinking skills. This study aims to develop and evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a PjBL-based practicum guide. A Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model was employed, combined with a comparative design involving experimental and control groups. The participants were eighth-grade students from two junior high schools in Central Bengkulu. Data were collected using expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and pretest–posttest instruments. The results indicate that the developed practicum guide achieved very high validity (media: 96%; material: 94%) and excellent practicality (97.45%). The effectiveness test showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group, with a significant difference (p < 0.001). These findings confirm that the PjBL-based practicum guide is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, Virtual Lab-assisted Discovery Learning (DL), and the conventional model on improving problem-solving skills and self-efficacy. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group. The results showed a significant difference in improvement in problem-solving skills between the three groups (p < 0.001). The Virtual Lab-assisted Discovery Learning model provided the highest improvement (an average increase from 26.77 to 57.43), followed by the Virtual Lab-assisted PBL model (an average increase from 26.39 to 55.64) and the conventional model (an average increase from 27.48 to 34.45). Meanwhile, for the self-efficacy variable, although all classes experienced significant internal improvement (p < 0.05), no statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p = 0.741). In conclusion, the use of virtual laboratories in active learning models is effective for visualizing abstract concepts and for training students' systematic, logical thinking. However, self-efficacy growth tends to be evenly distributed across approaches that provide successful experiences.   Keywords: Discovery Learning, Self-Efficacy, Problem-Solving Skills, Problem-Based Learning, Virtual Laboratory

Abstract

Assertive communication by elementary school teachers: Students’ perspectives on vocal ethics and reinforcement Abstract: This study aims to analyze the dynamics of assertive communication implementation among elementary school teachers from the students' perspective, focusing on vocal ethics and reinforcement dimensions. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, the research involved 126 students at SD Negeri 198 North Bengkulu, selected through proportional random sampling. The results reveal a dualism in teacher communication profiles: high consistency in avoiding negative labeling (85.7%), yet 30.9% of students reported instability in vocal ethics during emotional situations. Regarding reinforcement, teachers predominantly provided non-material affective appreciation (46.8%) compared to material reinforcement (50.8% never). These findings emphasize that teacher assertiveness is highly dependent on emotional regulation, manifested in vocal stability and the dominance of social reinforcement. It is concluded that effective assertiveness requires synchronization between verbal messages and vocal calmness to ensure students' psychological safety. The study recommends vocal coaching and stress management training for teachers to minimize emotional leakage in the classroom and suggests longitudinal studies on the impact of affective reinforcement on students' intrinsic motivation.
