Abstract

The digital era presents both challenges and potential threats to the sustainability of local cultural values in Indonesia. Rapid developments in information technology have contributed to shifts in traditional wisdom, which in some cases are marked by an increased tendency toward intolerance. Such phenomena have the potential to damage national identity and disrupt social harmony in a multicultural society. From a psychological perspective, intolerance can be mitigated through the enhancement of cognitive understanding of diversity via multicultural intelligence, as well as the realization of prosocial behavior through the development of cross-ethnic and interreligious friendships. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of multicultural intelligence and cross-ethnic and interreligious friendships as predictors of tolerance among university students in the digital era. A quantitative approach with a multiple linear regression design was employed. The study involved 1,038 students from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, selected using a convenience sampling technique. The research instruments included the Cultural Intelligence Scale, the Cross-Ethnic and Interreligious Friendship Scale, and the Tolerance Scale. The results indicated that multicultural intelligence and cross-ethnic and interreligious friendships significantly predicted tolerance (F = 633.814, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that tolerance can be cultivated through enhancing individuals’ understanding of diversity and through positive social interactions with people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of implementing educational programs based on cross-ethnic, interreligious, and cultural literacy within academic environments on a continuous basis. Such programs are expected to support young people in consistently internalizing and practicing tolerance in diverse social contexts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus face not only physical challenges but also psychological pressures such as stress, anxiety, and a decreased quality of life. This condition encourages patients to use both adaptive and maladaptive Coping strategies in order to endure their illness. This study aims to explore how individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus cope with stress and pressure caused by their illness through Coping strategies. The research used a qualitative approach with an interpretative phenomenological method, involving five participants aged 40–60 years who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and reported experiencing stress. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Coping mechanisms, including problem-focused Coping, emotion-focused Coping, and religious Coping. The findings show that at the initial stage, participants tended to deny their condition and experienced negative emotions such as sadness, anger, and stress. Over time, however, they gradually moved toward acceptance by adjusting themselves and giving spiritual meaning to their illness. The Coping strategies used included problem-focused efforts such as regular medical treatment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, emotion-focused efforts such as crying, surrendering, and seeking support, as well as religious Coping such as praying, attending religious gatherings, performing worship, and interpreting the illness as a test from God. Support from family, spouses, friends, and life experiences played an important role in strengthening psychological resilience. These findings suggest that Coping strategies not only serve to reduce stress but also become a pathway for individuals to find meaning in life and improve their quality of life. Keywords: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Coping Strategies, Religious Coping, Meaning-Making, Spiritual Meaning.

Abstract

Female sex workers (FSWs) often manage a concealable, stigmatized identity, yet some are known within their neighborhoods. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examined how five Indonesian FSWs (35–45 years) living in Central Java made sense of “living openly” and mental health as emotional, psychological, and social well-being. “Living openly” was defined as negotiated openness: at least some community members (e.g., neighbors, informal leaders, and/or family) knew participants’ work status, while operational details were deliberately withheld. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling and completed in-depth interviews in Indonesian; excerpts were translated into English for reporting. Idiographic accounts converged in four cross-case themes: (1) boundary work that eased the burden of secrecy without requiring total disclosure; (2) emotional relief coexisting with vigilance as stigma resurfaced through gossip, moral judgment, harassment, and safety concerns; (3) psychological well-being sustained by time–space separation between work and home, privacy management, selective trust, and meaning anchored in caregiving roles; and (4) social well-being built through routine participation and visible contribution to community activities under conditional acceptance. The findings position openness as a continuing social practice through which well-being is reconstructed amid persistent stigma and structural vulnerability. Implications highlight harm-reduction norms, safe spaces, and family support.

Abstract

Although the psychological impacts of natural disasters have been widely studied, in-depth research on the process of spiritual well-being formation among survivors of volcanic eruptions in eastern Indonesia, particularly within local cultural contexts, remains very limited. This study addresses this gap by exploring how survivors interpret and construct their spiritual well-being following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores. This study employed a qualitative design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five survivors who directly experienced the eruption participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Creswell’s procedural stages, including coding, theme development, and cross-case interpretation. The findings reveal that spiritual well-being develops through four interrelated domains: personal, communal, environmental, and transcendental. The personal domain involves self-acceptance and meaning-making; the communal domain emphasizes solidarity and mutual care; the environmental domain reflects renewed awareness of nature; and the transcendental domain highlights a deeper relationship with God. These domains are strengthened by mindfulness, self-compassion, and social support within the refugee community. This study contributes to the development of spiritual well-being theory in post-disaster contexts by providing an in-depth phenomenological understanding of survivors’ lived experiences. Practically, the findings suggest that community-based recovery programs should integrate spiritual and social dimensions to enhance holistic post-disaster rehabilitation. Keywords: disaster survivors, interpretative phenomenological analysis, spiritual well-being, volcanic eruption
