Abstract

This study examined how Indonesian EFL undergraduates interpreted English literature by integrating affective stylistics, mood–tone analysis, and cultural contrast into a unified interpretive framework. Employing a qualitative interpretive case study, data were collected from 24 literature majors in North Sumatra through close-reading tasks, think-aloud protocols, and semi-structured interviews. All instruments underwent expert validation and interrater reliability checks to ensure consistency in affective and tonal coding. Data were analyzed thematically to trace how students’ cognitive-affective responses unfolded during real-time reading. Using selected passages from Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hunger Games, the findings revealed three systematic distortions: affective misalignment, marked by reduced emotional cues; tonal misclassification, where markers of probability were interpreted as certainty; and moral domestication, marked by the simplification of ethical ambiguity into binary judgments. These patterns demonstrated an affective cultural overlay, in which readers unconsciously replaced foreign affective cues with culturally familiar ones. The study underscored the need for pedagogical interventions that foster interpretive flexibility and minimize culturally driven misreadings.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This community service program aimed to enhance students’ capacity to design shelters for stray cats through a biomimicry approach while also strengthening their public communication competence through an English for Public Awareness Campaign. The activity was conducted at Universitas Negeri Makassar and utilized the digital design technology Autodesk Fusion 360 to produce shelter models that were adaptive to urban environments and the natural behavioral needs of cats. The implementation methods included biomimetic design training, three-dimensional modeling practice, and the development of public awareness campaigns using academic English aligned with the terminology of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results showed an improvement in students’ understanding of nature-based design principles, their ability to use design software, and their skills in constructing factual and diplomatic English narratives for public awareness campaigns. The program also encouraged the integration of design innovation, international language literacy, and community participation in efforts to improve urban animal welfare and public environmental awareness. Keywords : Design training, stray cat shelter, biomimicry, english for public awareness campaign ABSTRAK Program pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas mahasiswa dalam merancang shelter kucing jalanan melalui pendekatan biomimikri serta memperkuat kompetensi komunikasi publik melalui English for Public Awareness Campaign. Abstract

This study explored how integrating fake news deconstruction, narrative reframing, and editorial simulation enhanced critical media ethics in EFL classrooms. Moving beyond conventional language instruction, it positioned English learning as a site of ideological negotiation and epistemic responsibility. Thirty education students as teacher candidates in North Sumatra engaged in an eight-week task-based curriculum analyzing ethically problematic texts drawn from real-world media. Guided by systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and appraisal theory, students rewrote distorted headlines, clarified vague attributions, and reconstructed visual-caption misalignments. Findings revealed that students developed rhetorical precision, ethical awareness, and stylistic maturity, transforming from passive consumers into critical and active media agents. By combining language learning with civic literacy, this study proposed a replicable model for ethical pedagogy in digital times, foregrounding truth-validation, genre critique, and linguistic agency as core components of 21st-century EFL education.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program developed and implemen ted an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module integrated with spatial visual note-taking techniques to improve participants’ note-taking skills in the IELTS Listening test. The program targeted final-year students and alumni from the Departments of Architecture and English Language Education who were preparing for higher educat ion and scholarship opportunities at English Village Pare, Kediri. The program employed participatory training, project-based learni ng, & experiential learning through needs assessment, module develo pment, workshops, guided practice, and evaluation. The module was designed based on dual coding theory, cognitive load theory, and the visual note-taking framework. The implementation results demonstra ted improvements in participants’ listening comprehension, keyword identification, paraphrase recognition, visual organization of notes, and adherence to IELTS answer-writing conventions. This program produced an innovative EAP learning module that effectively, contextually, and sustainably supports IELTS Listening preparation.
