Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to examine the phenomenon of ethical crises among students in the digital age from the perspective of the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), with a focus on the etiquette of seeking knowledge within the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) Medan. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical research design. Data was obtained thru observation of students' academic behavior in face-to-face and online lectures, semi-structured interviews with students and lecturers, and documentation in the form of academic assignments and other supporting documents. This research is also supported by a literature review examining the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), classical Islamic texts such as Ta'līm al-Muta'allim by Az-Zarnuji and Iḥyā' 'Ulūm al-Dīn by al-Ghazali, as well as relevant contemporary scientific literature. The research findings indicate that UINSU Medan students are experiencing an academic ethics crisis characterized by a decline in the etiquette of seeking knowledge, a decrease in awareness of academic honesty, and an increasing dependence on digital technology, particularly the internet and artificial intelligence (AI). Forms of this ethical crisis include excessive reliance on AI without critical thinking, plagiarism and copy-pasting in academic assignments, and manipulation of research data due to time pressure and administrative demands. From the perspective of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Islamic scholarly traditions, this phenomenon reflects a weakening of the values of honesty (ṣidq), trustworthiness, diligence (mujāhadah), and sincerity of intention in seeking knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to reinforce academic ethics based on the etiquette of seeking knowledge so that the use of digital technology aligns with the formation of students' character and intellectual integrity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the legality of medical injections during fasting from an Islamic jurisprudence perspective by examining two main approaches: textual and substantial. The research arises from contemporary issues caused by the development of medical technology, which has introduced modern treatment methods such as injections that are not explicitly discussed in classical fiqh literature. Using a qualitative method with a library research approach, this study draws on classical fiqh texts, contemporary literature, and related scientific journals. Data were analyzed inductively through a review of concepts, arguments, and the legal istinbath methods used by scholars. The findings reveal two main trends in understanding the legality of medical injections during fasting. The textual approach argues that injections do not invalidate the fast because they do not enter through natural channels (al-manafiz al-ma‘rufah), such as the mouth and nose, and are not categorized as eating or drinking. In contrast, the substantial approach holds that injections may invalidate the fast if they function as substitutes for eating and drinking, particularly nutritional injections. Therefore, classifying the type of injection is crucial in determining its legal ruling. This study concludes that an integrative-substantial approach is more relevant for addressing contemporary issues by distinguishing between nutritional and non-nutritional injections. Non-nutritional injections do not invalidate the fast, whereas nutritional injections do. These findings contribute to the development of more contextually grounded contemporary Islamic jurisprudence and provide practical guidance for Muslims and medical professionals in observing the fast without neglecting health considerations.

Abstract

This study examines the modernization of Islamic education in Indonesia through an analysis of the educational thought of Malik Fadjar. Employing a qualitative approach with a figure-based study design, the research explores Malik Fadjar’s ideas and practical contributions to educational reform, particularly in the areas of human resource development, curriculum modernization, and institutional governance. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentary analysis, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings reveal that Malik Fadjar conceptualized modernization as a holistic and integrative process aimed at overcoming the dichotomy between religious and general knowledge while preserving Islamic values. His reform agenda emphasizes ethical leadership, teacher professionalism, curriculum integration, and participatory governance as key pillars of sustainable educational development. The study further demonstrates that Malik Fadjar’s ideas remain highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges faced by Islamic education, including globalization, technological change, and institutional competitiveness. This research contributes to the discourse on Islamic education reform by highlighting a value-based modernization model that harmonizes tradition and modernity within the Indonesian educational context.
