Abstract

Abstract

Regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, various countries have implemented strict restrictions on community activities to prevent the spread of this outbreak. Restrictions on community activities turn out to have a positive impact on the environment, especially the improvement of Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Surface Air Temperature (SAT). In this paper, the Spatio-temporal variation of LST and SAT in several cities of Indonesia and Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic is investigated. This study utilizes secondary data from government data and the interpretation of remote sensing imagery. The data were analyzed using remote sensing and statistical analysis using an independent sample t-test to show the comparison. The results of this study indicate that LST in five cities decreased during the period of restriction of community activities. It can be seen from the average value of LST during the pandemic that it was lower than the same period in the previous year. The decline of LST in the zones of industrial activity centers, services, and commuter lines shows the effect of reduced transportation and industry. Meanwhile, the SAT in five cities during the pandemic did not show any difference from the same period in the previous year. The geographical characteristics of these cities in the archipelago are estimated to have contributed to the strong influence of the sea in stabilizing the SAT. In summary, this study provides alternative information on the impact of restrictions on community activities during the pandemic on LST and SAT in Southeast Asia. This study also presents new insights to understand the implications of the pandemic on the environment in the tropical island region cities.

Abstract

The prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is ranked third among all cancer types in both men and women, highlighting the urgency for drug exploration. Zerumbone and its derivatives have gained attention for their ability to inhibit angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis and have been tested for their efficacy against various cancer cells. This study aimed to investigate the potential targets and mechanism of action of zerumbone derivatives in colon cancer invasion and migration. Bioinformatic analysis was conducted using STITCH and STRING to identify potential target genes, and molecular docking was used to search for anticancer candidates from 20 zerumbone derivatives. The results revealed that six proteins were targeted by zerumbone derivatives, including XIAPBIR3 (1TFT), AKT1 (3O96), JAK2 (6VGL), HASP90AA (2XJX), MDM2 (4MDN), and XIAPBIR2 (4KJU). Compound 4 was found to have a lower binding energy than zerumbone as well as AZD5363 (pan-Akt inhibitor) when interacting with the protein target AKT1. This makes it the most promising candidate among the zerumbone derivatives for treating colorectal cancer. Further development, such as the addition of an amine functional group, is expected to improve the potency of this molecule through the formation of hydrogen bonds and other interactions with lower bond energy. Keywords: Bioinformatic, molecular docking, zerumbone derivatives, colorectal cancer.

Abstract

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are one of the most widely studied nanoparticles for various applications and other alternatives because of their unique properties. The uniqueness of these properties depends on the technique used to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles. This study aims to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles using tomato crude extract as a capping agent and to analyze the antioxidant activity of ZnO nanoparticles using DPPH and ascorbic acid as standard solutions. The synthesized powder of ZnO nanoparticles was characterized using XRD and SEM. The results obtained for the crystal size of the capping agent and without the capping agent were 20.597 nm and 24.717 nm according to JCPDS No. 00-036-1451. The particle size of ZnO using tomato extract as a capping agent is 43.325 nm which indicates that the particles are in the nanosize range and are spherical in shape. The IC50 yield of ZnO nanoparticles using a capping agent was 133.9623 ppm which indicated that ZnO nanoparticles had moderate antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Indonesia’s rich biodiversity includes Moringa oleifera, widely used in traditional medicine. However, environmental factors such as climate, soil, and agronomic practices can influence the phytochemical composition and bioactivity of its leaves. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of acetone extracts of M. oleifera leaves sourced from South Lampung. Leaves were air-dried, powdered, and extracted via maceration in acetone. Phytochemical screening employed standard reagents (Dragendorff’s and Mayer’s for alkaloids; Mg and HCl for flavonoids; Liebermann–Burchard for steroids and triterpenoids; FeCl₃ for tannins; foam test with 2 N HCl for saponins). Antioxidant capacity was assessed using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, triterpenoids, and tannins, while saponins were not detected. In the DPPH assay, percentage inhibition increased with concentratio, yielding an IC₅₀ of approximately 209.4 ppm. This relatively high IC₅₀ indicates weak radical-scavenging activity under the present conditions. The findings provide the first detailed report of phytochemical constituents and DPPH-based antioxidant capacity for acetone extracts of M. oleifera leaves from South Lampung. Although secondary metabolites with known bioactivities were detected, the weak DPPH scavenging suggests that acetone may not optimally extract the most potent antioxidant compounds or that local growth conditions yield lower phenolic/flavonoid concentrations.

Abstract

Transportation activities cannot be separated from the spatial structure of a region. Local spatial structure applies to areas characterized by urban-hinterland systems with modest coverage, such as Yogyakarta. In this paper, we evaluate the reciprocal relationship between the development of public transportation "Trans Jogja" and the urban spatial structure in Yogyakarta City and its satellite areas. The data collected are secondary data obtained from documentation and primary data from observation, including Trans Jogja routes and bus stops, location of population activity centers, land use, and population data. Data analysis was conducted using GIS analysis using average nearest neighbor, buffering, and overlay; statistical analysis using simple linear regression; and descriptive analysis. There are two main findings in this study. First, transportation services develop following the characteristics of population activities, as evidenced by the distribution pattern of routes and bus stops that follow the location of activity centers and population density. Second, transportation development also triggers the formation of urban landscapes that tend to exurbanize. In summary, this study offers alternative information that provides new insights into the reciprocal relationship between transportation development and the spatial structure of cities in Indonesia.
