Abstract

This research examines ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings by applying the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014). The qualitative methodology was used to comprehensively explain the meaning in a Japanese storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou ‘A Livestock of Hope’ by Mori & Yoshida (2015). Based on the analysis of the lexico-grammatical aspect used in the text, it can be concluded that these three meanings simultaneously relate. Ideational meaning shows the domination of material processes generally found in children's narratives. Interpersonal meanings show a tendency of IndicativeDeclarative MOOD, which can be interpreted as the author of the storybook being positioned as the information provider to the readers. Textual meaning shows that the information distribution is frequently realized with the unmarked topical theme, which can be interpreted as most of the texts' subjects are farm owners and their cows. Meanwhile, the thematic progression is dominated by a reiteration pattern (constant theme). It can be interpreted that the same theme repeatedly and sequentially appears to help the readers understand the text. A storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou has successfully provided information about the struggle of a farm owner who chose to stay on his farm after the earthquake and tsunami. The information is delivered in a narrative that can be easily understood without putting aside the entertainment aspect of a storybook.

Abstract

The application of the maxim principle can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the conversations. Grice’s four cooperative principles of maxims allow us to assume that the people having a conversation are working together to create an effective conversation. This research aims to identify the most frequent flouting and violations of maxims committed by the characters in “A Man Called Otto” movie and to determine the factors that cause these flouting and violations. By applying a qualitative approach, the results show that all types of maxims are flouted and violated in the movie. The study argues that the causes of the flouting and violations are lacking of understanding, and avoiding a certain topic, especially on the maxim of quality and relation. Focus on the topic, respond appropriately, and provide accurate and truthful information are the keys to effective and honest communication that remains relevant, coherent, and conducive.

Abstract

Like many other pressing problems in today's society, plastic pollution is being investigated by linguists under the subcategory of ecolinguistics. In this context, the present study tries to identify the material process in BBC's selected articles on plastic pollution. In particular, by using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014), the study qualitatively analyzes the way how material processes in SFL indicate something that has been done physically between two entities in a clause. This research explains verbs as material processes in clauses and the function of their appearance in BBC’s selected articles based on transitivity analysis as part of SFL and categorizes them as creative or transformative processes. From this research, it can be seen that the material process is very useful in writing texts, especially in defining a process, whether it is creative, or transformative. From the analysis, the actor tends to change of some aspects of the existing things, rather than creating the new ones by the process. Keywords: BBC, ecolinguistics, material process, plastic pollution, systemic functional linguistics

Abstract

Working on writing argumentative essay instructions has been practices in a non-formal language learning settings. Yet, its students pursued claims are not fully explored as an evaluativion of how student-writers interact as conveying arguments with the readers. Investigating the linguistic resources on which they develop and evaluate these, two selected English Language essays were looked into regarding to exploitation of macrostructures in them. Subsequently, they were captured within the framework of appraisal theory as to emerge various trends relative to the employment of engagement resource types, combined with the other resources in confirming claims: graduation and attitudinal ones. It was pinpointed that the essays were low-graded notifying substantial numbers of monoglossic resources with low-considered attitudinal items. They failed to recognise other voices and alternative positions. Their construction of evaluative meanings provided feedbacks, enhancing classroom teachers awareness of typical features in genre-based instructions.

Abstract

Mandalika is an Indonesian tourist destination notable for sports tourism, as a result of the construction of the Mandalika circuit as an infrastructure for various international events to be held. Moreover, Mandalika also contains natural and cultural resources that can be explored. Therefore, it is categorized as one of the 5 Super Priority Destinations and is still being developed to attract domestic and international visitors. This research analyses relational processes found in five selected Mandalika tourism texts uploaded on the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy website under the Systemic Functional Linguistics point of view. Based on the data acquired in this study, a qualitative method is used. Based on the analysis, each clause broadly reflects Mandalika’s features, but the participants involved have different ways of describing each feature. In addition, the dominance of identifying relational processes in intensive clauses (33%) highlights the most prominent elements of Mandalika, providing readers with the greatest recommendations to enjoy throughout their vacation to Mandalika.

Abstract

The purpose of this writing is to uncover how graffiti can multimodally represent Indonesian police and create ideology through the use of its textual and visual element. This writing is descriptive qualitative research with multimodal discourse analysis approach. The data of this research are collected through the internet, as the real graffities have been erased from the real-life locations. The data of this research consist of virtual images and sentences of the graffiti that have been documented. The data are analysed through the use of Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse analysis theory of the representational meta-functions, and Michael Halliday’s ideational meta-functions. The analysis is divided into textual and visual analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the graffities represented ideologies that Indonesian police is easily corrupt, enemy of the people, and does not accept critique from the public by the use of specific visuals and words. The graffities that are used as the data of this research are forms of the creators’ ideologies toward Indonesian police.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the different types of onomatopoeia in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga. Attack on Titan is the English title of the Japanese manga series Shingeki no Kyojin, written by Hajime Isayama. The researchers selected Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga as the object of study because the plot in the early beginning of the story uses various onomatopoeic words to enhance the action scenes and intensity of the battles. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the types of onomatopoeia using the theory stated by Bredin (1996). The data were collected by reading all the chapters in Attack on Titan volume 1 manga, taking notes of the onomatopoeias found throughout the story, and identifying their type and function. The findings of this research show that 99 data of onomatopoeic words are found in the manga, consisting of 55 direct onomatopoeia, 14 associative onomatopoeia, and 32 exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia appeared more frequently than the other two forms because many character movements and natural sounds happen throughout the story.

Abstract

The widespread use of English by people from various parts of the world has led to the emergence of new vocabulary, including the process of affixation between English and Indonesian words. By analyzing samples of common Indonesian words attached with the suffix ‘-less’, this research aims to discuss the use of the suffix ‘-less’ in Indonesian words and how it is used in context. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data sources were obtained from Indonesian words containing the suffix ‘-less’ that appear in posts, comments, and quotes from X/Twitter users in Indonesia. The data then analyzed based on the theory of word formation as a sub discipline of morphology by Lieber (2009). This research finds that the application of the suffix ‘-less’ is more often found attached to nouns and is rarely found attached to verbs.
