Abstract

Mandalika is an Indonesian tourist destination notable for sports tourism, as a result of the construction of the Mandalika circuit as an infrastructure for various international events to be held. Moreover, Mandalika also contains natural and cultural resources that can be explored. Therefore, it is categorized as one of the 5 Super Priority Destinations and is still being developed to attract domestic and international visitors. This research analyses relational processes found in five selected Mandalika tourism texts uploaded on the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy website under the Systemic Functional Linguistics point of view. Based on the data acquired in this study, a qualitative method is used. Based on the analysis, each clause broadly reflects Mandalika’s features, but the participants involved have different ways of describing each feature. In addition, the dominance of identifying relational processes in intensive clauses (33%) highlights the most prominent elements of Mandalika, providing readers with the greatest recommendations to enjoy throughout their vacation to Mandalika.

Abstract

The purpose of this writing is to uncover how graffiti can multimodally represent Indonesian police and create ideology through the use of its textual and visual element. This writing is descriptive qualitative research with multimodal discourse analysis approach. The data of this research are collected through the internet, as the real graffities have been erased from the real-life locations. The data of this research consist of virtual images and sentences of the graffiti that have been documented. The data are analysed through the use of Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse analysis theory of the representational meta-functions, and Michael Halliday’s ideational meta-functions. The analysis is divided into textual and visual analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the graffities represented ideologies that Indonesian police is easily corrupt, enemy of the people, and does not accept critique from the public by the use of specific visuals and words. The graffities that are used as the data of this research are forms of the creators’ ideologies toward Indonesian police.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the different types of onomatopoeia in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga. Attack on Titan is the English title of the Japanese manga series Shingeki no Kyojin, written by Hajime Isayama. The researchers selected Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga as the object of study because the plot in the early beginning of the story uses various onomatopoeic words to enhance the action scenes and intensity of the battles. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the types of onomatopoeia using the theory stated by Bredin (1996). The data were collected by reading all the chapters in Attack on Titan volume 1 manga, taking notes of the onomatopoeias found throughout the story, and identifying their type and function. The findings of this research show that 99 data of onomatopoeic words are found in the manga, consisting of 55 direct onomatopoeia, 14 associative onomatopoeia, and 32 exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia appeared more frequently than the other two forms because many character movements and natural sounds happen throughout the story.

Abstract

While tourism has been widely studied across various disciplines, there is still limited research on the connection between tourism and corpus linguistics. The purpose of this study is to examine the types of tourism destinations and attractions in Indonesia by analyzing linguistic patterns in a large-scale corpus. The data source is the Leipzig Corpora Collection, comprising Indonesian language texts published between 2008 - 2018 (excluding 2014). Using the Master Plan of Indonesian Tourism Development 2010 - 2025 as a classification framework, this study identifies and categorizes tourism destinations and attractions based on occurrences of the word “wisata” ‘tourism’. The classification includes three categories: nature, culture, and man-made attractions. It is further divided into 10 classifications and 39 sub-classifications. The findings reveal that nature-based tourism is the most frequently mentioned category, comprising 499 instances (52%), followed by man-made attractions (38%), and cultural tourism destinations and attractions (10%). The most common reference made when talking about nature tourism is land-based tourism destinations and attractions, followed by marine waters, island, and geoparks. Through this research, we gain an understanding of how tourism destinations and attractions in Indonesia are represented linguistically and demonstrate the utility of corpus linguistics as a tool in tourism studies.

Abstract

The widespread use of English by people from various parts of the world has led to the emergence of new vocabulary, including the process of affixation between English and Indonesian words. By analyzing samples of common Indonesian words attached with the suffix ‘-less’, this research aims to discuss the use of the suffix ‘-less’ in Indonesian words and how it is used in context. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data sources were obtained from Indonesian words containing the suffix ‘-less’ that appear in posts, comments, and quotes from X/Twitter users in Indonesia. The data then analyzed based on the theory of word formation as a sub discipline of morphology by Lieber (2009). This research finds that the application of the suffix ‘-less’ is more often found attached to nouns and is rarely found attached to verbs.

Abstract

The meaning of the language used in reviews can be evaluated using the attitudinal resources within the appraisal system proposed by Martin White in 2005. The framework provides the attitude subsystem that helps identify the clauses in the categories of Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation. This research aims to examine the attitudinal resources that occurred in the reviews of the "Yellowface" (2023) novel by Rebecca F. Kuang on the Goodreads website and how the reviewers' attitudes are expressed. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken from the Goodreads website based on the top five popular reviews. After analyzing the clauses in the collected data, the researcher then classified them into three categories of attitudinal resources. From the 169 clauses that were identified, the results show that both positive and negative features and all resources occurred in the reviews, with Appreciation being the highest resource that is used, followed by Judgement and Affect. Based on the findings, this research argues that the reviewers tend to evaluate the book's content more than to judge the behavior of the author and the book's characters or to express their emotions concerning the book. As a result, the use of Appreciation might help other readers know the values and qualities of the book.

Abstract

Department of Culture and Tourism in Bandung harnesses the power of its official Instagram account, @disbudpar.bdg, to promote the citys diverse tourist attractions and cultural richness. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the various topics presented on the account that showcase the multifaceted nature of Sundanese culinary traditions. The researchers collected culinary information from 642 posts on Instagram feeds, resulting in 118 data points considering various cuisines, both traditional and modern. The focus of this study is on 86 data points related to traditional meals and beverages in 2022. Employing van Dijks Critical Discourse Analysis within the micro-structure theory, the descriptive qualitative method was used for the analysis. The findings reveal four distinct classifications of topics related to culinary diversity. They are the diversity of traditional Sundanese meals (66 data), the diversity of traditional Sundanese beverages (2 data), restaurants offering traditional foods and beverages (16 data), and ingredients for traditional pastries (2 data). Additionally, the analysis uncovers the use of interrogative sentences, declarative sentences, and lexical choices that effectively support and describe the promotion of culinary diversity as a prominent tourist attraction in Bandung. Interrogative sentences engaged followers, declarative sentences provided factual insights, and diverse lexical choices enticed readers to appreciate Bandungs culinary offerings.

Abstract

Drawing on the appraisal theory framework developed by Martin and White (2005), this study examines Tempo's attitudinal stance.co toward the Free Nutritious Meals Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis) implemented by the Indonesian government in 2025. The results show that a total of 63 attitudinal resources were identified, with appreciation being the most frequent (43%), followed by judgement (40%) and affect (17%). Negative attitudes account for 74% of the data, indicating a predominantly negative stance. These criticisms are explicitly conveyed and focus on operational issues such as food quality, safety concerns, limited menu variation, unequal distribution, and perceived weaknesses in government management. Positive attitudes (26%) are less frequent and focus mainly on the program’s intended goals, such as improving children’s nutrition and supporting local food industries, rather than its actual implementation. These findings indicate that Tempo.co tends to adopt a negative stance toward the program’s implementation, primarily expressed through explicit evaluations of its shortcomings, while offering limited recognition to its broader policy objectives
