Abstract

The meaning of the language used in reviews can be evaluated using the attitudinal resources within the appraisal system proposed by Martin White in 2005. The framework provides the attitude subsystem that helps identify the clauses in the categories of Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation. This research aims to examine the attitudinal resources that occurred in the reviews of the "Yellowface" (2023) novel by Rebecca F. Kuang on the Goodreads website and how the reviewers' attitudes are expressed. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken from the Goodreads website based on the top five popular reviews. After analyzing the clauses in the collected data, the researcher then classified them into three categories of attitudinal resources. From the 169 clauses that were identified, the results show that both positive and negative features and all resources occurred in the reviews, with Appreciation being the highest resource that is used, followed by Judgement and Affect. Based on the findings, this research argues that the reviewers tend to evaluate the book's content more than to judge the behavior of the author and the book's characters or to express their emotions concerning the book. As a result, the use of Appreciation might help other readers know the values and qualities of the book.

Abstract

Department of Culture and Tourism in Bandung harnesses the power of its official Instagram account, @disbudpar.bdg, to promote the citys diverse tourist attractions and cultural richness. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the various topics presented on the account that showcase the multifaceted nature of Sundanese culinary traditions. The researchers collected culinary information from 642 posts on Instagram feeds, resulting in 118 data points considering various cuisines, both traditional and modern. The focus of this study is on 86 data points related to traditional meals and beverages in 2022. Employing van Dijks Critical Discourse Analysis within the micro-structure theory, the descriptive qualitative method was used for the analysis. The findings reveal four distinct classifications of topics related to culinary diversity. They are the diversity of traditional Sundanese meals (66 data), the diversity of traditional Sundanese beverages (2 data), restaurants offering traditional foods and beverages (16 data), and ingredients for traditional pastries (2 data). Additionally, the analysis uncovers the use of interrogative sentences, declarative sentences, and lexical choices that effectively support and describe the promotion of culinary diversity as a prominent tourist attraction in Bandung. Interrogative sentences engaged followers, declarative sentences provided factual insights, and diverse lexical choices enticed readers to appreciate Bandungs culinary offerings.

Abstract

Drawing on the appraisal theory framework developed by Martin and White (2005), this study examines Tempo's attitudinal stance.co toward the Free Nutritious Meals Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis) implemented by the Indonesian government in 2025. The results show that a total of 63 attitudinal resources were identified, with appreciation being the most frequent (43%), followed by judgement (40%) and affect (17%). Negative attitudes account for 74% of the data, indicating a predominantly negative stance. These criticisms are explicitly conveyed and focus on operational issues such as food quality, safety concerns, limited menu variation, unequal distribution, and perceived weaknesses in government management. Positive attitudes (26%) are less frequent and focus mainly on the program’s intended goals, such as improving children’s nutrition and supporting local food industries, rather than its actual implementation. These findings indicate that Tempo.co tends to adopt a negative stance toward the program’s implementation, primarily expressed through explicit evaluations of its shortcomings, while offering limited recognition to its broader policy objectives

Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative research explores the processes configured in Lampungese language clauses. Here, the processes are structured in clauses showing physical actions, feelings, thinking, relation, behaviour, and existence. It investigates the processes using Hallidayan transitivity system and focuses on the constituents forming a clause, such as participant, process, and circumstance. In order to keep a natural setting, the data of this research were collected by documentation from passages of six lesson books of Lampungese language. The results of analyses show that the process of doing is realized with nyeghbu, ngemulai perlawanan, ngelawan, ngebantu, ditulis and diteghusko, whereas the mental process is constituted by nyeghah, ngenal, nganggop, and dikenang. Meanwhile, the realization of relational process is dimaksudko, which is classified as an identifying relational process. It is also found that a relational clause can be structured without any relational process. The disappearance of the process can be categorized as zero relational process and marked with 0.  The result of this research is expected to give a contribution to document the structure of the Lampungese language.

Abstract

This study examines the evaluation language of HIV/AIDS campaign texts published on the official website of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Drawing on Martin and White’s appraisal framework, it analyzes how attitude, engagement, and graduation are deployed to construct public understandings of HIV/AIDS. Using a qualitative case study design, the study examines campaign materials collected from January to March 2025 through purposive sampling and document-based analysis. The findings show that the texts rely on a dual evaluative strategy. On the one hand, affect is dominated by insecurity, dissatisfaction, and unhappiness, foregrounding fear, stigma, uncertainty, and the continuing social burden of HIV/AIDS. On the other hand, positive evaluations are also salient, particularly in references to medical progress, early detection, treatment access, and institutional support. In the judgement system. The text endorses responsible, informed, and preventive behaviour while condemning ngegligence, discrimination, and stigmatizing practices. In appreciation, positive valuation is attached mainly to advances in treatment and public health services, although systemic limitations and persistent prejudice are also critically represented. Overall, the discourse frames HIV/AIDS simultaneously as a medical, social, and moral issue. The study contributes to appraisal-based discourse analysis and offers insights for more inclusive and effective health communication.

Abstract

The Ministry of Education and Culture has published 3M's health protocol behavior change guidelines regarding the campaign to prevent COVID-19 transmission in 77 local languages of Indonesia. However, this research only focused on guidelines that used Sundanese as a local language in West Java. This research aimed to identify the types of attitudes and analyze the meanings that appear in these guidelines. The author used the theory of Martin and White (2005), namely the attitude subsystem as part of the appraisal system with Systemic Functional Linguistic approach which showed the author's evaluative attitude towards various things written to lead the readers. The result of this research showed that some information contained judgement both positive and negative side such as the authors found 15 clauses included in the affective indicator of the attitude subsystem in security meaning and four clauses satisfaction meaning. In addition, the authors found 16 clauses included in the attitude subsystem of judgment indicator referring to social esteem and three clauses referring to social sanction. The author also found 12 clauses included in the attitude subsystem of appreciation indicator referring to composition, five clauses referring to valuation, and two clauses referring to reaction. Based on the results of the analysis of each clause listed in the 3M health protocol behavioral change guidelines then the authors conclude that the message conveyed is positive attitude for the society.
