Abstract

This paper aims to describe how sensitive cultural may be a pattern of words and actions that should be played according to social status. This sensitive culture is ideal for each ethnic group supporting the culture. If each does not play it according to its status, it can cause misunderstanding and even conflict. Therefore, the relationship between ethnicity, immigrants, and ethnic minorities needs to be sensitive to indigenous nationalities and dominant cultural understanding. The methodology used in obtaining the data uses a qualitative approach to data collection techniques: observation and interviews. The location of the research is Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The results show that the city of Makassar, which is still dominated by a single ethnic group of the Bugis-Makassar to be ideal in inter-ethnic relations, uses interaction patterns of the pattern of the dominant ethnic culture or ethnic original. Thus, it should be understood by all ethnic groups who live in the city, whether its status as indigenous or tribal settlers, so that the inter-ethnic relations be harmonious. Makassar, a multi-ethnic city, is still dominated by ethnic Bugis-Makassar. At the same time, the original ethnic and cultural patterns become ideal interaction patterns in the city. As for ethnic immigrants, for example, ethnic Toraja, Mandar, Java, Ambon, Papua New Guinea, NTT, NTB, Batak, Padang, Chinese, Arabic, Padoe, and others, must understand its status as an immigrant minority, must be adaptive and be accepted in its interaction with the ethnic dominant. Therefore, as ethnic immigrants in the exchange must follow the pattern of interaction patterns in one's ideals by the dominant ethnic group, whether it be words or actions, said eg Iye, iyo, ba, iya, tabe, kita, kau, daeng, katte. Besides that, there are also rude words, namely tai laso or tai baro, nassundala’, and suntili’. It is undoubtedly susceptible when there are ethnic immigrants who do not language and act as the dominant culture because it can be considered not adaptive or do not respect an indigenous culture as a manifestation of the ideal of the dominant ethnic groups.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Islamic values and local wisdom in the Maddoa tradition of Pinrang Regency, Indonesia. Maddoa', a communal prayer ritual, serves not only as a cultural heritage but also as a medium to strengthen collective religious identity and social cohesion. Despite modernization and shifts in the structure of society, these traditions remain important in shaping community interactions and spiritual life. Using a qualitative field research approach, this study seeks to understand in depth the practice and evolution of Maddoa' in contemporary society. This approach allows researchers to explore the social dynamics, symbolic meanings, and changes that occur in these traditions over time. To provide a comprehensive analysis, this study applies a sharia normative framework to examine the extent to which the practice of Maddoa' is in harmony with Islamic principles, both from the theological and legal aspects of Islam. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. These findings show that Maddoa' embodies a dynamic blend of Islamic teachings and customs, fostering a collective awareness of gratitude and devotion to Allah SWT. In practice, Maddoa' serves as a means to foster a collective awareness of gratitude and devotion to Allah SWT, strengthening the relationship between individuals and God and their society. More than just a prayer ritual, this tradition strengthens social ties by instilling the values of togetherness, mutual cooperation, and concern between community members. In this context, Maddoa' is not only a cultural heritage, but also a symbol of harmony between local religions and traditions, creating a unique model of synergy in which Islamic values are not only accepted, but also adapted within a cultural framework that has been rooted for centuries.  In addition, this tradition also reflects a unique model of religious and cultural synergy. This study contributes to a broader discourse on religious acculturation and the sustainability of local traditions in the face of globalization.

Abstract

The management of public spaces in Makassar faces challenges in maintaining a balance between modernization and the preservation of local cultural values. This study explores the role of local wisdom, especially the values of Siri' na Pacce, cooperation, and communal solidarity, in maintaining the sustainability of public spaces amid rapid urbanization. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, this study conducts participatory observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to understand social dynamics in the management of public spaces. The results of the study show that despite changes due to urbanization, people still maintain cultural values in the use of public spaces. However, privatization and commercialization threaten community involvement in its management. Changes in social interaction patterns are also seen with the increasing use of digital platforms compared to physical meetings in public spaces. This research recommends culture-based strategies for more inclusive urban planning, by strengthening collaboration between governments, communities, and the private sector to ensure that public spaces remain part of society's social identity. Thus, local wisdom can continue to be the main pillar in maintaining the sustainability of public spaces in Makassar.

Abstract

The Tallo Riverbank is an area with a high potential for flooding. Even so, some community groups continue to survive and make the area their settlement, one of which is in the RT 3/RW 7 area, Antang Village, Manggala Subdistrict, Makassar City. This study aims to understand the community's views on flooding, the risks they face and perceive, as well as the practices undertaken in dealing with flood risks. Using a qualitative approach, this research explores the experiences and views of the community directly to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the community's struggle with flooding. Data collection techniques used were observation and in-depth interviews. This study involved 10 informants, which included 5 men and 5 women. This research shows that the community of RT 3/RW 7 faces various risks due to flooding, ranging from safety risks, economic risks, and health risks. However, economic limitations, proximity to livelihood sources and access to education, as well as strong social ties with the local community influence the perception of flood risks. Thus, the decision to live in flood-prone areas is not just a natural hazard with high risks, but part of daily life that must be faced by developing various practices to respond to flood risks ranging from mitigation, evacuation, to recovery. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for practical implementation through the development of community-based flood mitigation pilot projects.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how the local wisdom of the Bugis-Makassar community can be integrated into sustainable public space management in Makassar. Using Lefebvre’s theory of the Production of Space, Harvey’s Right to the City, and the concept of cultural sustainability, the research positions public space as a social and political construct shaped by power relations and cultural meaning. The study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach, with data collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation in key public spaces including Losari Beach, Karebosi Field, and community-driven alleyways (Lorong Wisata). Findings reveal that urban modernization tends to marginalize local wisdom, exacerbating inequality and undermining social cohesion. However, grassroots initiatives rooted in cultural values such as siri’ na pacce and gotong royong show strong potential for inclusive and participatory revitalization. These findings contribute to spatial theory by integrating cultural dimensions into the concept of spatial production and offer practical strategies for equitable and culturally grounded urban planning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Islamic orphanages (Lembaga Kesejahteraan Sosial Anak, LKSA) grounded in the values of Progressive Islam (Islam Berkemajuan) in shaping children’s character, leadership, and social engagement. Employing a qualitative approach, this research utilizes participatory observation and in-depth interviews conducted at the Amrullah Aisyiyah Orphanage in Limbung. Data were collected over a month period and analyzed using a thematic approach guided by the pedagogical framework of Progressive Islam. The findings reveal that daily religious routines within the orphanage play a fundamental role in instilling discipline and moral identity among children. Skills training programs, integrated with Islamic values, significantly contribute to fostering self-reliance and leadership capabilities. Moreover, the institution’s active involvement in non-resident child development illustrates its critical role in empowering the surrounding community. The Progressive Islam framework has proven to be an effective foundation for the holistic integration of spiritual, social, and vocational development. This research enriches the discourse on faith-based character education and highlights the potential of Islamic orphanages as agents of social transformation. The findings serve as a reference for designing educational policies and programs in LKSAs and provide a basis for further studies on the role of religious institutions in community development.

The results showed that the degree of political inclusivity of state apparatus in the 2015 mayoral and deputy mayoral elections was as follows: state apparatus in the election of the mayor and deputy mayor of Palu were in a neutral position, However, there are several realities where there are emotional and work relationships that are always under pressure, either directly or indirectly, making it difficult to make political decisions individually and have to be involved in the state apparatus situation itself. Abstract

The transformation of transportation infrastructure in Makassar—from toll roads and BRT corridors to digital mobility—has significantly altered the city's landscape. However, migrant groups such as online motorcycle taxi drivers, port workers, and street vendors face physical, symbolic, and digital exclusion. This study employs urban ethnography, participatory observation, and route tracing with 32 resource persons. The analysis was carried out through thematic coding, grounded theory, and cross-method triangulation. The results show that top-down built infrastructure often poses mobility barriers, but migrants are not passive: they take alternative routes, build community solidarity, and make tactical use of technology. This practice shapes the infrapolitics of mobility while producing urban space from below. This study enriches the theories of Lefebvre (space production), Urry (the mobility turn), Giddens (structuration), and Gandy (the political ecology of infrastructure), and affirms the importance of the spatial ethnography approach in understanding cities in the global South.
