Abstract

This qualitative study explores seventh-grade students' perspectives on using "The Story of Candi Pari" educational comic in English reading instruction at SMP Dharma Wanita 7 Tanggulangin, East Java. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 selected students, alongside observations and documentation, which were later analyzed through thematic analysis. Eight themes emerged in response to two research questions. Students identified four strategies that enhanced reading skills: the integration of visual and textual components aided comprehension; gaining vocabulary in context was facilitated by various hints; making comics led to increased engagement; and visual panels helped in grasping narrative structure. Four additional themes represented the students' views: increased enthusiasm and enjoyment, a preference for visual formats that reduce reading anxiety, cultural significance which contributes to a deeper understanding through familiar local material, and pride in their local identity and history. The results indicate that educational comics rooted in local narratives can serve effectively as both instructional and reading resources. They encompass multiple dimensions of reading development, such as cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, and sociocultural elements. This offers substantial proof of the effectiveness of culturally relevant multimodal approaches in secondary education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Considering the importance of English as one of pivotal courses in compulsory education, Indonesian students are liable to error produced during their language acquisition phase. This paper’s aim is to unveil what is the most frequent language interference presents in students’ writing that centered upon grammatical context, along with its correlative factors and the very process of interference, encountered by senior high school learners within their second or foreign language acquisition phase. This was carried through library research, which relies towards other articles from researchers, under the same concerns of language interference, as the main objective. There are 4 researches taken as primary sources that issued or published within the last 5 years. The findings of each studies are assessed in gaining a better insight for this paper’s inquiries. From the analysis, the outcomes proved that the errors mostly occurred were caused by interference came in a form of incorrect use of verb as well as copula ‘be’ omission during sentence composing. Such errors were not solely caused by the entity of language interference alone, yet also compounded by the lack of motivation in using English as a communication medium both inside and outside the classroom activity.

Abstract

This study examines the use of flashcards in English vocabulary instruction for seventh-grade students. General Background: Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of English language proficiency and supports listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Specific Background: In Indonesian junior high schools, students often experience difficulties in retaining newly learned vocabulary due to limited use of engaging learning media. Knowledge Gap: Although digital flashcards have been widely studied, limited attention has been given to handmade flashcards supported by AI-generated images in low-technology classroom contexts. Aims: This study aims to determine whether flashcard media improves students’ English vocabulary acquisition and learning interest at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Tanggulangin. Results: Using a pre-experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design with 20 students, the findings reveal an increase in mean scores from 71.00 to 75.75, with a paired sample t-test significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference. Novelty: The study highlights the integration of AI-generated images into handmade flashcards as a practical low-cost instructional strategy. Implications: Flashcards can be integrated into English language teaching to support vocabulary retention, active participation, and meaningful repetition in junior high school contexts. Keywords: Flashcards, Vocabulary Mastery, English Language Learning, Junior High School Students, Pre-experimental Design Key Findings Highlights Mean scores increased significantly after classroom intervention. Statistical testing confirmed measurable learning gains. Visual repetition supported classroom participation and retention.

Abstract

Speaking is still one of the most difficult skills in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms, as students usually have problems with expressing their ideas confidently and taking active part in oral interaction. Even though communicative learning and culture-based pedagogy have been discussed separately in previous studies, there is a lack of studies on the use of pantun in a case-based learning (CBL) setting in EFL speaking instruction. Thus, this research is aimed at analyzing the implementation of CBL based on Pantun and investigating students’ perceptions toward the learning process. This research was conducted by using a qualitative descriptive approach to 40 students of grade eight at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sidoarjo, Indonesia. A classroom observation was used to collect data; semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed. The findings indicated three major themes: engagement and collaborative interaction, development of speaking through linguistic scaffolding, and linguistic challenges and meaning negotiation. Contextualized case scenarios and collaborative pantun construction were used to encourage students to be active in speaking activities. Generally, students were positive in their perceptions of the activities, as they were perceived as relatively more interactive and conducive to speaking participation. Furthermore, pantun was a linguistic scaffold that assisted students in more systematically organizing spoken expressions. The current study concludes that CBL based pantun has the potential to support communicative participation and culturally contextualized speaking instruction in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

General Background Contemporary education requires students to master 21st-century skills, including oral communication and critical thinking within student-centered environments. Specific Background This qualitative descriptive research analyzes the implementation of Problem-Based Learning to improve junior high school students' speaking skills through the topic of additive substances in English and science classes. Knowledge Gap Although Problem-Based Learning is widely recognized for improving speaking performance, research specifically integrating additive substance materials within a problem-based learning framework for junior high school students remains limited. Aims This study aims to analyze the implementation of Problem-Based Learning in improving junior high school students' speaking skills through additive substance topics and to identify challenges during the process. Results The findings indicate that the application of Problem-Based Learning successfully fosters contextual, creative, and student-centered learning, enabling students to show significant improvements in speaking fluency, vocabulary mastery, and self-confidence while cultivating preventive awareness against additive substances. Novelty This study demonstrates a dual-impact educational model that simultaneously integrates language competency acquisition and preventive character education through meaningful real-world problem investigation. Implications These insights suggest that educators should adopt Problem-Based Learning methodologies to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and meaningful communication aligned with independent curriculum principles. Highlights: Problem-Based Learning creates contextual, creative, and student-centered learning environments that actively engage learners. Students achieve noticeable gains in oral fluency, vocabulary retention, and self-assurance during presentations. Integrating health topics into language lessons builds social awareness and preventive attitudes regarding harmful substances. Keywords: Problem-Based Learning, Speaking Skills, English Language, Contextual Learning, Additive Substances
