Abstract

Traditional alcoholic beverages are one of the culinary delights that have existed since the Ancient Javanese period, one of the proofs of the existence of these beverages is in the Masahar Inscription. The Masahar Inscription is an inscription issued by Mpu Sindhok in the 10th century AD for the inauguration of the sima land, namely Masahar. The inscription mentions three traditional alcoholic beverages, namely siddhu, cinca, and tuak. This study aims to determine the form, function, and meaning of traditional alcoholic beverages in the 10th century AD Masahar Inscription. This research is qualitative research through a case study approach. Data collection techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The study used interpretive qualitative with an analysis model of form, function, and meaning. The results of the study indicate that traditional alcoholic beverages mentioned in the Masahar Inscription are alcoholic beverages that are not only interpreted profanely, but also have sacred functions that are carried out in special ways according to the practices of ideology, politics, religion, social and culture that prevailed during the Ancient Javanese period. The study contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, especially the tradition of making and using traditional alcoholic beverages that may still exist or have changed form until now. Interdisciplinary research that combines historical, archaeological, and cultural anthropological methods is highly recommended to explore the symbolic and ritual aspects of alcoholic beverages in social and religious contexts.

The primary focus of this research is to identify the denotative, connotative meanings, and myths contained in the symbols within the song's lyrics. The research method used is qualitative with a semiotic analysis, where the research data consists of song lyrics taken from an online source. Data is collected by observing the Kupu-kupu lyrics, which are then analyzed in depth using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The data analysis technique involves three stages: first, the analysis of denotative meaning, which reveals the literal meaning of each symbol; second, the connotative analysis to explore deeper meanings related to the feelings of love depicted; third, the identification of myths formed through the symbols in the song. The results show that the lyrics of this song depict love as a feeling that affects both the physical and emotional aspects, with symbols such as blushing cheeks, a pumping heart, and butterflies representing the freedom of love. Love is portrayed as a force that strengthens relationships, offers sincerity, and maintains happiness. In conclusion, the lyrics of Kupu-kupu create a profound, dynamic, and freely evolving representation of love in line with the myths of love in popular culture. This finding contributes to the development of semiotic studies of Indonesian music by enriching the understanding of how symbols in song lyrics construct social and emotional meanings within the context of local culture. Keywords: Barthes' semiotics; love in music; lyric symbolism; pop culture; Indonesian songs

Abstract

Reverse culture shock is the next level of culture shock phenomenon that is commonly caused by asymmetric locations and frequently happens to sojourners returning to their homeland. Cities like Malang and Surabaya are examples of asymmetrical locations that are highly contrasted in terms of life pace as Malang is slow-paced while Surabaya is fast-paced. This circumstance potentially establishes such culture shock phenomena. This study, therefore, aims to examine the culture shock and reverse culture shock phenomena experienced by sojourners by focusing on its influence in shaping their personal traits and views. This study is categorized as qualitative research. The data collection technique is in the form of interviews with the sojourners who have met the criteria. This study applied Mizerow’s theory of transformative learning to analyze the data. The result of this study reveals that all participants had undergone both culture shock and reverse culture shock experiences. They also showed indications of which phenomena have influenced their personal traits and views in certain perspectives, specifically in shaping gratitude traits..

Abstract

Petirtaan Jolotundo is one of two petirtaans (sacred bathing places) on Mount Penanggungan. It is an important archaeological heritage site, known for having the oldest recorded date in the Penanggungan Mountain area—899 Saka or 977 AD. Within the petirtaan is an inscription carved on its eastern wall, visually prominent and written in Old Javanese (Kawi) script, containing the word Gempeng and the number 899. This research aims to uncover Petirtaan Jolotundo's cultural identity through the interpretation of these two inscriptions. The study was conducted at the site of Petirtaan Jolotundo, located in Biting Hamlet, Seloliman Village, Trawas District, Mojokerto Regency, East Java Province. This qualitative research adopts a case study approach, focusing specifically on Petirtaan Jolotundo. Data collection techniques include observation, literature review, and interviews. The data analysis method follows an interpretative qualitative approach, applying Norman Fairclough's theory of critical discourse analysis, which comprises three levels: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The results of this study show that the inscriptions—Gempeng and 899—serve as cultural markers that reveal the identity of Petirtaan Jolotundo and the Old Javanese community. These inscriptions highlight the community's role in shaping and preserving the site's cultural significance across generations.

Abstract

This article analyzes the cultural significance of the theme song of Si Doel Anak Sekolahan using an ethnomusicological approach, specifically focusing on the representation of Betawi society. The main problem addressed is how the song's lyrics reflect the identity, values, and social changes of the Betawi people within an urban context. Additionally, this study explores how music functions as a form of cultural storytelling, representing the daily experiences and social dynamics of the Betawi community. This research aims to understand the role of music as a medium of cultural expression that mirrors social realities while preserving cultural identity in the face of modernization. The method used is a qualitative lyrical text analysis to identify prominent cultural themes. The findings reveal that the lyrics are not merely entertainment but also a means to reinforce community identity and reflect complex social dynamics.

Abstract

The Riau Archipelago, rich in marine biodiversity and cultural heritage, has long been home to the Orang Suku Laut, a nomadic maritime community deeply connected to their aquatic environment. This study explores the cultural transformations experienced by the Orang Suku Laut amid rapid modernization and industrialization, with particular attention to their traditional practices, environmental challenges, and strategies for resilience. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in cultural ecology theory, this research draws on extensive library-based data—including peer-reviewed journals, government reports, and ethnographic studies—to analyze the socio-cultural and ecological impacts of development on this indigenous community. Through thematic content analysis, the study reveals significant disruptions to cultural practices, reduced access to marine resources, and identity struggles in the face of urbanization. Nevertheless, the findings highlight opportunities for resilience through community-led heritage preservation, eco-tourism, and adaptive integration into modern governance. This study argues for development policies that uphold indigenous cultural integrity while promoting inclusive sustainability in maritime regions.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the current life habitus of the Tengger Indigenous People amid the growing tourism industry in the Bromo area. Method: Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs), then analyzed using a social and cultural reproduction framework. Results: The findings reveal five core habitus that characterize the Tengger Indigenous lifestyle: Maintaining Politeness, Obeying the Rules, Straightforward and Relatively Smooth Language, Simple Reasoning, and Peaceful Living. However, transformations—referred to as a “shock” to the habitus—have emerged, triggered by external influences such as the ownership of luxury vehicles, culturally insensitive behavior by foreign tourists, and the discovery of illicit drug cultivation. These phenomena indicate social tensions disrupting the community’s traditional harmony. Novelty: This research offers a comprehensive understanding of the transformation in indigenous cultural habitus due to tourism, emphasizing the urgent need for balanced and respectful interactions among stakeholders in the TNBTS area to preserve traditional values while accommodating modern demands.
