Abstract

Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a major egg parasitoid of brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal (Hemiptera: Delphacidae). The purpose of this study was to examine the egg development type, the effect of host deprivation and feeding on the reproductive performance of parasitoid. Determination of the egg development type was done by dissecting females of A. nilaparvatae upon emerging. Adult females aged 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours were killed in the freezer. Abdominal of wasp was dissected by micro pin. Mature egg of wasp were calculated and documented. Treatment of host deprivations were conducted by feeding 10% honey solution and depriving female parasitoids of host for 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 hours consecutively. After treatments, female parasitoids were given hosts every day until the parasitoids died. Another group of parasitoids were given with water and treated with the same lenght of deprivation period. Results showed that the A. nilaparvatae egg development type is proovigenic. The egg maturation of parasitoid has been initiated since it first emerge with 75% mature eggs of potential fecundity. In the conditions provided 10% honey solution or water as feed, reproductive performance of A. nilaparvatae decreased with increasing duration of host deprivation period, include realized fecundity, parasitization rate, and longevity of female wasp. The decline in the reproductive performance was done by host deprivation for 9 to 18 hours. Longevity of female wasps varied from one to three days, with higher and lower values consecutively for 9 and 18 hours of host deprivation period.

Abstract

Whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) plays an important role as pest in many horticultural plants (fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants). The aim of this research was to study whiteflies diversity in horticultural plants on different altitude. Whitefly samples were collected from its host plants in five areas of West Java Bogor, Sukabumi, Cianjur, Bandung, and Garut. The places were grouped into three altitude categories: lowland, midland, and highland. Number of whitefly species and individual were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post-hoc Tukey (α = 0.05), while the correlation between altitude and whiteflies species number described in linear regression. Species diversity was measured by two types of index (Shannon and Simpson). The highest number of whitefly individual was found in vegetables (121.80). However, the highest number of whitefly species was found in fruits (2.44 species). According to the altitude, the highest number of whitefly species was found in the lowland (4.67 species), whereas the lowest was found in the highland (1.58 species). The abundance of whiteflies population increases with increasing of altitude, whereas the number of species decreases with increasing of altitude. The highest number of whitefly species diversity was found in the lowland (H' = 2.08), meanwhile the lowest was in the highland (H' = 0.38). By contrast, according to the Simpson index, there was species domination of whitefly in the Highland (D = 0.54) by species Aleurodicus dugesii Cockerell

Abstract

Hymenoptera is one of the four largest insect orders in the world, one of which is its role as a natural enemy (parasitoids, predators). Land conversion can affect the diversity and composition of the parasitoid Hymenoptera and its ecological role. This study aims to examine the effect of land use types on the diversity and composition of hymenopterans parasitoid in Jambi. The study was conducted on various types of land use in the Harapan Forest landscape and Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD), Jambi Province including forests, rubber forests, oil palm plantations, and rubber plantations. Insect sampling was conducted from March to September 2013, using fogging techniques. A total of 14,258 hymenopteran parasitoid individuals consisting of 30 families were obtained from all study sites. Encyrtidae, Braconidae, Aphelinidae, Eulophidae, Scelionidae, Ceraphronidae, and Platigasteridae families are found in high abundance. Oil palm land use types are found to have different parasitoid compositions compared to other land use types, while forest and rubber forest land use types have high species composition. The results of this study indicate that the type of land use affects the diversity and composition of hymenopteran parasitoid species.

Abstract

Insect populations have declined significantly over the last few decades. Anthropogenic factors such as deforestation, land-use change, climate change, and pesticides play a major role in insect population decline. In addition to those factors, insects also face challenges from air, noise, and light pollution derived from human activities. Light pollution in the form of artificial light at night (ALAN) is generally known to be one of the factors driving insect declines but it has rarely been studied in Indonesia. In this literature review, we collected empirical evidence from previous studies to provide a comprehensive report on the impact of ALAN on insects. Most studies demonstrate a decline in insect populations in areas with high ALAN intensity, such as urban areas. Furthermore, ALAN was reported to disrupt insect visual systems, which results in disturbances to predator avoidance and foraging movements. Until now, most work related to artificial light in Indonesia have focused on light as a method of controlling pests. Hence, studies related to artificial light as a pollutant are urgently needed to increase our understanding of the effects of ALAN on the survival of organisms, especially insects. Future research must seek suitable solutions to create environmentally and ecologically friendly conditions for various organisms, especially those susceptible to the negative effects of light, such as insects.

Abstract

Refugia are plants that play an important role in the conservation of natural enemies in agroecosystem. Refugia plants are useful for providing shelter and host/prey for natural enemies, especially parasitoids and predators. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of refugia and different planting seasons on the diversity and species composition of natural enemies (especially predatory spiders and Hymenoptera parasitoids) in maize fields. Field research was conducted in two different seasons i.e., dry season (April to July 2022) and rainy season (September to December 2022) in Tumpang Village, Malang District. The maize fields for the study were grouped into four different areas, with two observation plots (size 40 m í— 50 m) in each area, consisting of a monoculture maize field (control plot) and a maize field with refugia plants (treatment plot). Sampling was conducted using pitfall traps (for predatory spiders) and yellow traps (for Hymenoptera parasitoids). Traps were set for 1 í— 24 hours and conducted at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks after planting. The results from two planting seasons were obtained predatory spider diversity amounted to 626 individuals consisting of 7 families, and 40 morphospecies, while Hymenoptera parasitoids amounted to 787 individuals consisting of 5 families, and 63 morphospecies. Based on generalized linear models analysis, it was found that refugia planting did not affect the diversity of natural enemies, but affected the species composition of predatory spiders. Different planting seasons affect the diversity and species composition of predatory spiders as well as Hymenoptera parasitoids.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Indigenous peoples are caretakers and practitioners of a unique culture connected to their community and the surrounding environment, including forests. In Indonesia, existing regulations acknowledge the identity of indigenous peoples and the forests they oversee. This paper provided evidence of the acknowledgment of customary forests and indigenous peoples, addressing the challenges and opportunities for managing customary forest products, both timber and non-timber, under a timber legality assurance scheme. This research is essential in advocating for legal reforms that protect the rights of indigenous peoples and ensure sustainable forest management while balancing environmental conservation with local community needs. The study sought to illuminate the challenges Indigenous Peoples encounter when accessing and utilizing forests and forest products within their customary territories. It employed exploration methods to gather reliable data and information, validated through expert interviews and described using triangulation. The research concluded that legal innovations are necessary to resolve issues concerning the recognition of customary forests and indigenous peoples to enable effective forest management while safeguarding the rights of indigenous peoples socially, economically, and ecologically. In addition, legal innovations are also required to avoid breaches of timber legality assurance, which can result in forest unsustainability. To enhance the effectiveness of these reforms, it is important to foster collaboration between government bodies and indigenous communities in developing and implementing forest management policies. Keywords: customary forests, forest governance, indigenous peoples, timber legality assurance
