Abstract

Metabolism is a series of complex biochemical processes that occur within cells to maintain life. Metabolism encompasses two main stages: anabolism (molecule formation) and anabolism (molecule breakdown). Carbohydrates are the primary energy source, broken down into glucose through glycolysis and cellular respiration, which generates ATP for cellular activity. Proteins are also used as building blocks for tissue growth and repair, as well as enzymes and hormones, with amino acids produced from protein breakdown involved in the synthesis of essential molecules. Fats are a dense energy source and long-term energy reserve, and play a role in thermal insulation, cell membrane formation, and hormone production like estrogen. Minerals, such as calcium and iron, and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride, play crucial roles in maintaining electrolyte balance, osmotic regulation, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle contraction. Electrolyte imbalances can lead to disorders such as dehydration or cardiac arrhythmias. Meanwhile, vitamins—such as vitamin C (an antioxidant) and B-complex (a coenzyme)—support metabolic reactions, including energy synthesis and cell protection from oxidative damage. In general, the basic concept of metabolism emphasizes the importance of synergy between these nutrients to maintain body homeostasis. A proper balance of intake can prevent metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and malnutrition, and support optimal health.

Abstract

The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones into the bloodstream to regulate various bodily functions. These hormones influence growth, metabolism, reproduction, mood, energy balance, and stress response. Each endocrine gland, such as the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, and testes, has its own function and produces different hormones. The endocrine system operates at a slower rate, but its effects are comprehensive and long-lasting, making it crucial for long-term physiological stability. Disruptions to this system can lead to serious illnesses requiring specialized medical treatment. This literature review synthesizes and contributes to the development of endocrinology and serves as a reference for medical practitioners, researchers, and students in understanding the complexity of the human body's hormonal regulatory system. This review uses a literature review method, with steps that include identifying, selecting, and synthesizing relevant research findings.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious global threat, affecting more than 200 countries. Indonesia is among the hardest-hit countries, with a mortality rate of 8.9% in March 2020. Preventive measures are needed to suppress the spread of this disease. Therefore, effective response strategies must be implemented immediately to mitigate the impact of this pandemic. These strategies include increasing public awareness, implementing health protocols, and increasing healthcare service capacity. Furthermore, further research on COVID-19 is needed to understand the characteristics and dynamics of its spread. This will hopefully suppress the spread of COVID-19 and prevent disruptions to people's quality of life. The government and the public must work together to overcome this pandemic.

Abstract

The development of molecular biology has significantly transformed clinical laboratory diagnostics, particularly through DNA analysis. One of the most widely used techniques is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a DNA amplification method capable of rapidly, sensitively, and accurately multiplying specific genetic fragments. PCR has become an essential diagnostic tool for detecting infectious, genetic, and malignant diseases, even at early stages when the amount of target DNA is minimal. This article aims to analyze the role of PCR in DNA analysis as a diagnostic tool in clinical laboratories, including its working principles, advantages, and relevance in modern clinical practice. This study employs a literature review approach by examining various scientific sources such as international journals and molecular biology textbooks. The findings indicate that PCR offers high sensitivity and specificity compared to conventional methods, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and accelerating appropriate therapeutic decisions. Therefore, PCR represents a crucial innovation in clinical laboratory diagnostics that significantly contributes to improving healthcare quality.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial leadership has become a crucial competency in higher education institutions seeking to adapt to rapid environmental changes and increasing global competition. This study explores how innovation behavior and dynamic capabilities among lecturers contribute to fostering entrepreneurial leadership within universities. Specifically, it investigates the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in the relationship between innovation behaviour and entrepreneurial leadership. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 85 lecturers at Universitas Duta Bangsa Surakarta. Path analysis and the Sobel test were used to examine both direct and indirect effects. The results reveal that innovation behaviour significantly influences both dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurial leadership. Moreover, dynamic capabilities partially mediate the relationship between innovation behaviour  and entrepreneurial leadership, highlighting their strategic role in enhancing institutional adaptability and innovation. These findings underscore the importance of cultivating innovation behaviour and developing dynamic capabilities among academic staff to promote entrepreneurial leadership. This research provides theoretical, managerial, and policy implications for university governance, emphasizing the need for supportive environments that encourage innovation and continuous development of academic competencies

Abstract

Fungi are microorganisms often found in food and can act as spoilage agents or have certain benefits. Rhizopus sp., Aspergillus sp., and Penicillium sp. are types of fungi commonly found in various foods with different characteristics. This study aims to determine the characteristics of the three fungi, explain the isolation method from food samples, identify morphological and microscopic differences, and analyze factors that influence the success of isolation and identification. The method used was fungal isolation in culture media from food samples, followed by macroscopic and microscopic observations. Data were analyzed descriptively in the form of tables and graphs. The results showed that Aspergillus sp. had the largest number of colonies (12 colonies) with an average diameter of 2.0 mm, Penicillium sp. had the largest diameter (4.5 mm) with 10 colonies, while Rhizopus sp. had 5 colonies with a diameter of 3.0 mm and the fastest growth. Macroscopically, there were differences in color, texture, and shape of the colonies, while microscopically, differences were seen in the type of hyphae, reproductive structure, and characteristics of each fungus. These differences are influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, substrate type, and the isolation technique used. In conclusion, the three fungi have distinct characteristics and can be identified through morphological and microscopic observations. Maintaining sterility and using a variety of media and environmental conditions is recommended to improve the accuracy of research result.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and gout are increasingly common health problems in the community. Lack of public awareness of the importance of regular health checks means many cases of NCDs go undetected in their early stages. This initiative aims to detect risk factors for NCDs early by conducting basic health checks in the community. The methods used include anthropometric measurements and simple health checks, such as weight, height, blood pressure, blood sugar, uric acid levels, cholesterol levels, waist circumference, and hip circumference. The results showed that some people still had test results above normal limits. These include blood sugar levels greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL, blood pressure greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg, high uric acid levels greater than or equal to 7 mg/dL in men and 6 mg/dL in women, and cholesterol levels greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL. These findings indicate the existence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that require attention and follow-up through health education and routine check-ups. These early detection activities help raise public awareness of the importance of regular health check-ups as a way to prevent and control NCDs early.
