Abstract

Penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) merupakan salah satu cara meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran sekaligus profesionalitas guru. Namun, banyak guru yang masih bingung mengenai bagaimana memulai, membuat, dan melaporkan hasil PTK mereka. Artikel ini membahas tentang pengabdian masyarakat (PKM) yang dilaksanakan oleh dosen prodi pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Banjarmasin dalam membantu para guru MGMP Bahasa Inggris. PKM berbentuk pelatihan yang dilaksanakan selama satu hari dan ditindaklanjuti melalui bimbingan hingga artikel penelitian berhasil diterbitkan. Materi yang diberikan terkait tahapan-tahapan PTK, analisis artikel PTK, dan akses jurnal bereputasi sebagai sumber referensi. Metode pelatihan berupa ceramah, diskusi kelompok, dan praktik. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara dengan peserta dan observasi selama pelatihan, mereka merasa bahwa kegiatan ini sangat bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam meneliti. Sebagian peserta, bahkan, telah memiliki konsep tentang apa yang akan mereka teliti.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge, increase understanding, and acquire new skills through learning activities. By implementing it in the classroom, students can plan learning activities, determine projects to be made, solve problems, carry out tasks collaboratively, and improve their abilities. Students’ Cooperation students build attitudes and skills abilities. This study explores lecturers’ and students’ perspectives on project-based learning in writing skills classes. The type of research used in this study is case studies. The research instruments used were interviews and checklist observations. Furthermore, the research subjects were students in a writing skill class at a private university in Banjarmasin. There result shows that the lecturers consider that PBL can increase student activity in writing skill classes because by implementing PBL, students are greatly assisted in working on their writing projects. Further research is suggested to explore more students’ perspectives on PBL.

Abstract

Program "Atasi Yuk Stunting, Itu Penting" merupakan sebuah inisiatif yang bertujuan untuk mengatasi masalah stunting yang menjadi ancaman serius terhadap kesehatan generasi muda. Latar belakang program ini melibatkan fakta bahwa stunting dapat berdampak jangka panjang terhadap perkembangan fisik dan kognitif anak, serta masyarakat secara keseluruhan. Tujuan program ini adalah meningkatkan kesadaran, pengetahuan, dan tindakan pencegahan stunting di kalangan siswa dan masyarakat. Metode pelaksanaan program ini mencakup pendekatan edukatif yang interaktif, dengan fokus pada permainan ular tangga raksasa yang kreatif. Hasil yang dicapai melalui program ini adalah peningkatan kesadaran dan pengetahuan peserta mengenai pentingnya pencegahan stunting. Peserta juga menerapkan langkah-langkah pencegahan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, termasuk pola makan yang sehat dan kunjungan kesehatan rutin. Keseluruhan, program ini berhasil dalam membentuk generasi yang lebih sehat, cerdas, serta mengurangi prevalensi stunting di masa depan

Abstract

The background of this research is to find out how to learn and apply English vocabulary in the nursing class. This study aims to find out the right way to teach English vocabulary to nursing students at a private university in Banjarmasin. This type of research uses qualitative research methods with case studies. The research instrument used interviews. The research subjects were 4th semester nursing students at a private university in Banjarmasin. Nursing students learn English by taking turns reading, presenting in English. The problems encountered during learning activities in class are sometimes not understanding when the lecturer explains, because each lecturer has a different accent, and some say that they don't learn English from the basics, so it's rather difficult to understand. The way to solve the problems found is to listen to English songs more often and watch movies with English subtitles to find out new vocabs, and also don't forget to often speak English with friends. The application of vocabulary in nursing classes students apply their English to communicate with patients and communicate with fellow nurses, actually the application is richer to friends and plans to patients, but this patient has not been implemented yet, the plan is implemented in 7th semester.

Abstract

English for nursing is one of the branches of English for Specific Purposes. This type of English lesson requires the teacher to choose a specific method in order to meet a specific learning objective. The final goal of learning this kind of English is to equip learners with competencies that suit their future job, one of them, is English skill. This is inseparable from the choice of an appropriate teaching method by the teacher. Many studies on the implementation of specific teaching methods have been undertaken. However, little is still known about the students' responses to the implementation of Task-Based Language Instruction in English for Nursing Classes. To fill this gap, the current study shed a light on this matter. This qualitative research aimed to explore students’ perception of this teaching method. There were 58 nursing students invited as the respondents. The data were garnered through interview and questionnaires. The implication of this research is to be contributed to the field of EFL teaching methodology as the expansion for the current studies in English for specific Purposes field.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the learning system. The great impact on the learning system is that millions of schools and universities are now starting to practice online learning massively at all levels of education. Now, the online learning system is also used in Intensive English Class (IEC) at one university in Banjarmasin. Intensive English Class (IEC) is a one-year English program for the students. This study aimed to investigate the use of online learning to enhance English skills through Intensive English Class. This is a qualitative descriptive study. This study invited 339 freshmen students and six Intensive English Class instructors as respondents. The results of this study show that online learning at Intensive English Class could effectively improve students’ English skills. This can be seen from the data that 58.1% students agreed that  the online learning could help them to enhance their English skills.  It was also supported by their knowledge of how to use online learning well. This means that there is a good connection between utilizing online learning and the development of English skills on Intensive English Class.

Abstract

Designing an English Syllabus for architecture students is important to match what they are studying at the university and their future job later. Through the syllabus, lecturers are aware of the mapping between learning outcomes, materials, teaching methods, and assessment and most importantly what students need in the future. English instruction for architecture students is included as English for Specific Purposes. In this circumstance, the lecturers must provide students with the students needs in their field, as outlined in the syllabus. To meet these requirements, the researchers conducted a Research and Development to develop an English Syllabus for Architecture students adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) including (1) needs analysis, (2) writing the product, (3) validating the product, (4) revising the product and (5) final product. Meanwhile, Language Program Development (LPD) by Yalden (1987) is chosen as the model of syllabus development. Thirty three architecture students, three architecture lecturers, and three architecture professional workers as alumni and stakeholder were involved. They were given a questionnaire, an interview, and a validation sheet to collect and triangulate the data. Then, the syllabus was developed, validated, and revised. The results showed that the syllabus of English for Architecture Students has been developed as an integrated syllabus, and it is feasible to use.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning is a necessity. One of the technologies that can be used in learning is video games because of their proximity to students. This study aims to describe the development of video game-based learning in learning English vocabulary. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study were collected by interview method. The findings resulting from this research are in the form of video games that are played by many students and can add to students' English vocabulary, namely video games in the form of online games such as Clash of Clans, RPG Toran online, and PC games in the form of FIFA 23. These games can help students improve vocabulary. English words through the hint language and the notifications that are in it. However, this method has a weakness in the form of unorganized vocabulary that students learn through video games and each student has a different level of vocabulary mastery according to the video game he likes.

Abstract

Learning English for nurses is very important because there are many English terms that nurses must know. In addition, for career needs it is also necessary that someone can speak English. Therefore, learning English for nursing is important. This research was case study in qualitative research. its assumed that this study aims to find out the way nursing students learn speaking skills. This research was conducted at a private university in South Kalimantan. In the English class of students majoring in nursing class of 2021, The findings from this study used interviews with two nursing students and one English lecturer who taught nursing classes. The results found that the process of students learning English was quite diverse. because by mastering a foreign language when they carry out their duties as medical personnel they have no difficulty communicating. It can be concluded that the way students learn speaking for the nursing profession is quite diverse, some use strategies through the habit of watching English films, some use materials from lecturers to improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

This research focuses on exploring the effectiveness of the Describing Picture Strategy in teaching speaking skills to students. The study aims to enhance students' English-speaking abilities by employing visual aids such as pictures during the learning process. The qualitative research design was utilized, and data were collected through interviews and observations with an English teacher at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Banjarmasin. The findings demonstrate that using pictures as speaking prompts can improve pronunciation, vocabulary retention, and overall language confidence. Additionally, picture-based activities engage students and create a more enjoyable learning experience. The study recommends that English teachers integrate the Describing Picture Strategy in their teaching approaches to foster active classrooms and enhance students' interest and proficiency in speaking English. However, the research acknowledges the need for further investigation to address certain limitations and refine the strategy for optimal results.
