Abstract

The research aims to describe the improvement of students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTs) and compare the differences in effectiveness between the two levels of the inquiry learning model. Two types of learning model levels were applied in this research, namely the Inquiry Lab and Guided Inquiry learning models. This research took place on Fluid Mechanics material on 11th grade of Islamic Senior High School Samarinda. The samples were 108 students out of all students at school as the population. The data obtained were then analyzed using N-gain and inferential statistics. The results showed that the students' HOTS increased significantly with a significance level of 5% after the Inquiry Lab and Guided Inquiry learning model was applied. Based on the calculation of N-gain, there was an increase for the class of 11th Science 2 with very high category (98%), class of 11th Science 1 with high category (83.62%), and a class of 11th Science 3 with low category (34%). Hence, the 11th Science 3 class was statistically significantly different (consistent). The implications of this research for universities include that the curricula for university courses should focus more on mini-research activities, especially those related to open inquiry. Furthermore, there was a significant difference in the effectiveness between the two levels of inquiry and conventional strategies in improving higher-order thinking skills. There are significant differences between the two levels of inquiry, namely Laboratory Inquiry learning and Guided Inquiry itself. The most significant in improving students' HOTs is Laboratory Inquiry.

Abstract

Not all physics concepts must be understood and mastered by deriving formulas through differential or integral techniques. Mechanics, for example, can be understood with simple logic without formulas, variables, and numbers. The fun method, or known as the GASING method, is a science learning method that has been offered by Yohanes Surya since 1996. This method offers fun learning activities for students. This research is a literature review of several books and research articles related to learning physics science using top methods. It turns out that with the spinning method, the concepts of velocity and acceleration in straight motion material can be understood easily and can solve some physics problems about straight motion without complicated physics formulas. All these physics problems are solved by simple logic and expressed in words.

Abstract

Physics learning cannot be separated from studying abstract concepts and practical activities to help students understand concepts in real terms. In the learning process, practical tools are needed to made easily and used in learning. The limited equipment in the laboratory is one of the obstacles to the lack of optimal learning activities, especially in practical activities. Therefore, teachers are required to be more creative and innovative in utilizing the tools around them so they can be used as practical tools. Dynamic electricity is also seen as an abstract concept requiring a practicum so that students can understand the concept real and meaningfully. Then, the other obstacle is scientific argumentation skills that still need to be better trained or not contained in the learning materials. It makes students' skills in scientific argumentation still lacking. The solution is: Synergize with the Physics Senior High School Teachers in Sidoarjo. They are trained through training to make physics practicum tools. Thus, the training participants can make these practical tools, can arrange student worksheets according to these tools and based on scientific argumentation skills. They can apply them in learning at their school. The result of this training is that the response of the Physics Senior high school teachers to the materials and demonstrations is very enthusiastic and interesting. This is evidenced by the average response questionnaire results of 3.44 with the maximum value of the questionnaire being 4. The maximum value obtained based on the response questionnaire is 3.66 and the lowest is 3.28.
