Abstract

This study aims to reveal the main reasons why wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and gamelan music were used again as tools of Islamic da’wah after the Wali Sanga era (Nine Saints). In Central Java (Banyumas, Solo, Demak, Pati), there has been a phenomenon of Islamic preaching and recitation performed by Kiai using wayang kulit and gamelan music. This study uses a phenomenological approach, which is to get an explanation of the apparent reality. This approach focuses on events that are seen as having an impact, polemic, and discourse on life. This study also uses a critical approach, looking critically at the phenomenon of -art- being researched to test how far the view that puts that wayang (and gamelan) is not by religious rules is accepted, rejected, and even opposed. The result shows that although da’wah using wayang and gamelan has sparked a lot of polemics, the use of wayang and gamelan music is considered more effective in spreading Islamic teachings to grassroots communities due to two factors. First, continuing the trace of tradition brought by the first Islamic missionaries in Java (Wali Sanga). Second, to make people aware, especially young santri (prospective preachers) or congregation today, realize that Islam is spread peacefully and without resistance through art.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the historical construction of criticism and propaganda formed in Kidungan Jula-juli performance in each era. Kidungan is a song in the Gending Jula-juli in East Java. The musical text presented in the song seems to be open (blak-blakan [openness]), assertive, and emotionally becomes the power of criticism. Historical issues concerning the function of Kidungan Jula-juli are interesting enough to be known, thus encouraging this study to get a basic and detailed understanding of the historical stages of the role of Kidungan Jula-juli from the Japanese era to the reformation era. This study using a historical approach and emphasizes the problem of music function. The analysis was carried out by looking at the ideas, concepts, and cultural references that accompanied the performance of Kidungan Jula-juli. The results of this study indicate the dynamics of the function of criticism and propaganda in Kidungan Jula-juli. During the Japanese occupation era, Kidungan Jula-juli was very sharp in its role as an instrument of the independence movement; from 1950 to 1965, Kidungan Jula-juli was used by political parties to strengthen political support and propaganda. In the New Order Era, kidungan lost the function of criticism.  The state controlled it for the sake of propaganda and the legitimacy of power.  Kidungan Jula-juli is more open and present on a stage with other performing arts in the era of the reform order.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the results of the arrangement of keroncong music performed by Congrock 17. Congrock 17 is a well-known progressive keroncong music group from Semarang City, Central Java, Indonesia. This study’s two musical works are the object of analysis: Keroncong Pemuda-Pemudi and Perdamaian. This study uses a musicological approach emphasizing the concepts of arrangement, freedom, expression, and musical form. These concepts determine how far Congrock 17 can create new characters and nuances in existing musical works. Musical considerations were made by Congrock 17 by keeping the fundamental nature of keroncong the same, especially in the use of musical instruments such as cak, cuk, bass, violin, and cello. As a result, the arrangement of old works by Congrong 17 was intended so that keroncong would develop more progressively, be liked by the younger generation, and avoid monotony.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of pèghâ' in the musical traditions of terbhâng ghendhing and kemplang in Probolinggo and Bondowoso, which emerged as a response to past religious prohibitions on the use of metal gamelan instruments. The research focuses on uncovering the adaptation of metal gamelan music into the membranophone ensembles of terbhâng ghendhing and kemplang from a musicological perspective. Using qualitative approaches and ethnographic methods, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that elements such as kejhungan, drumming patterns, bonang patterns, and gending structures were preserved, although the shift from metal to membrane caused significant changes. These changes resulted in a playing style that is more repetitive, dynamic, and aligned with the membranophone's characteristics. This study also challenges the conventional view of membranophones as purely rhythmic instruments, demonstrating their capability to perform complex melodic roles in terbhâng ghendhing and kemplang. The process of pèghâ' underscores traditional music as a dynamic entity that continues to evolve through local creativity, creating new musical identities while maintaining its cultural roots.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is often characterised by symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dyspnoea, excessive sweating, trembling, dizziness, and somatic symptoms such as pain and fatigue. In addition to physical problems, cardiovascular patients also often face psychological disorders, especially anxiety. High levels of anxiety in these patients can hinder the treatment process and worsen their condition. One effective nonpharmacological therapy to reduce anxiety in cardiovascular patients is music therapy, which can help calm and relax patients. Aim: to describe whether music therapy intervention is effective in reducing anxiety levels in cardiovascular patients. Methods: the writing of this article uses a systematic review conducted through a search strategy on 4 databases namely Scopus, scince direct, Pubmed, and Clinical key with a total of 3,824 articles obtained. The articles were then filtered based on inclusion and exclusion criteria to leave 5 articles. A total of 5 articles that met the criteria were then subjected to critical appraisal using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist guidelines. Results: In general, this systematic review shows that music therapy intervention is effective in reducing the anxiety level of cardiovascular patients.

Abstract

The Wayang Topeng Malang performance titled Dhalang Patah Kuda Narawangsa is one of the unique plays staged by Padepokan Asmarabangun, alongside Ronggeng Rara Jiwa – Rara Tangis. This play presents peculiarities surrounding gender fluidity, which influence the power relations among characters through the dialogues delivered. To further explore this notion, this study employs Connell’s theory of gender hegemony as the primary analytical tool, and Peirce’s semiotics theory as a supporting framework to examine the language used through discourse analysis. In doing so, it contributes to the field of Linguistic Anthropology. This study aims to document the Wayang Topeng Malangan performance and investigate the systems and forms of power embedded within it through linguistic practices. The research shows that the language used constructs a system of masculine power when interacting with characters that present as either masculine or feminine. This practice creates hegemony by rejecting heterogeneous expressions of masculinity and their constitutive elements. Thus, gendered power emerges through linguistic choices—particularly those that convey emotional detachment and aggressiveness. Gendered power relations in the form of hegemony are present in both private spaces, such as the household, and public spaces, such as governance. The more frequent the enactment of power in these spaces, the greater the scale of masculinity that is produced.
