Abstract

Snacks for school-age children are important for meeting daily nutritional needs, but both excess and deficiency of nutrients can affect children's growth and development. This study aims to develop a healthy snack based on Binto' Toeng flour (Barbinto) and to test its acceptability and nutritional content. The research was conducted using an experimental design with a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) from April to June 2024, involving the preparation of gude bean flour, the production of Barbinto, organoleptic testing, and nutritional analysis. The organoleptic test showed that the control formulation had the highest preference score from both trained panelists and consumer panelists, with mean values of 5.23 and 5.80, respectively. Among the three experimental formulations, the one with 10% gude bean flour had the highest mean score of 5.2 and 5.05. Nutritional analysis indicated an increase in protein, fiber, ash, Vitamin A, and iron content, although there were decreases in carbohydrate, fat, water, Vitamin C, and zinc levels. Barbinto is expected to become a healthy snack option for schoolchildren, but innovations are needed to reduce the off-flavor in the product.

Abstract

Stunting is a significant global health problem, with an estimated 149 million children under five experiencing this condition in 2018. Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant recommended by WHO as an alternative food to overcome nutritional problems or malnutrition. This service aims to increase knowledge about the use of moringa to prevent stunting, encourage active community participation in planting moringa trees in every home, and hone family skills in innovation in processing moringa-based food. The service method uses a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. This program is conducted through education, training, and mentoring using lecture, discussion, and direct practice methods. The results of the service showed a positive response from the community, as seen from their activeness during education and socialization of Moringa-based food innovations. This education succeeded in increasing public understanding about using Moringa leaves to prevent stunting, with pre-test and post-test data showing an increase in knowledge from 44.60 to 93.00. This program also distributed 500 Moringa tree seeds and trained people to make processed Moringa products into innovative foods, such as pudding and brownies, opening up economic opportunities. This program is expected to provide sustainable benefits for the health and welfare of the local economy.

Abstract

Abstract

The increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia is influenced by the interaction of internal and external multifactors. The incidence of DM is predicted to continue to increase to reach 578 million in 2030 and 700 million in 2045. This study aimed to analyze factors related to the incidence of diabetes in Indonesia.  This research used quantitative methods with a cross sectional approach and uses secondary data taken from the source "Riskesdas 2018". The unit of analysis in this research is 34 provinces in Indonesia. Data was analyzed using scatter plot diagrams. The results of the study showed that smoking habits, lack of physical activity, obesity, and difficulty in accessing primary health care have been shown to contribute to an increased risk of diabetes mellitus. Meanwhile, consumption of sweet foods is not directly related to an increase in diabetes mellitus. Health campaigns targeting smoking behavior, promotion of active lifestyles, education about the dangers of obesity, and improving the accessibility of health services can help reduce the risk of diabetes. Further research is needed to understand more deeply the factors that may contribute to the relationship between consumption of sweet foods that are not directly related to increased diabetes mellitus, as well as to design more effective intervention strategies.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a major non-communicable disease with a high prevalence in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas. Although farmers are generally engaged in physical labor, lifestyle factors such as unhealthy dietary patterns and poor nutritional status may contribute to elevated blood pressure. The existing literature has yet to fully integrate dietary patterns, physical activity, and BMI within a nutritional ecology framework to understand hypertension among rural farming populations; this study addresses that gap. This study aimed to analyze the association between dietary patterns, physical activity, and Body Mass Index/BMI (nutritional status) with hypertension among farmers in Kanreapia Village, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 908 farmers aged 35–59 years, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected via structured interviews and measurements of blood pressure and anthropometry. Data analysis included univariate, bivariate (Chi-Square test), and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of hypertension among respondents was 51.2%. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between age, smoking habits, risky dietary patterns (such as consumption of salty foods, grilled foods, processed meats, and instant noodles), and BMI with hypertension (p< 0.05). However, multivariate analysis identified only nutritional status (BMI) as significantly associated with hypertension (p < 0.001; OR = 0.41; CI: 0.508–0.809). Other variables were not statistically significant, including salty food consumption (OR = 0.999; CI: 0.758–1.316), grilled foods (OR = 0.963; CI: 0.613–1.514), processed meat/chicken/fish with preservatives (OR = 1.202; CI: 0.774–1.866), instant foods (OR = 0.957; CI: 0.729–1.255), and fruit consumption as a fiber source (OR = 1.124; CI: 0.847–1.491). Conclusion: Nutritional status is the main determinant of hypertension among farmers, even though risky dietary patterns and physical activity showed significant associations in bivariate analysis. Public health interventions focusing on weight management and nutrition education are essential to reduce hypertension risk in rural farming communities.

Abstract

Despite maternal and child health (MCH) policies in Indonesia, substantial gaps persist between policy targets and service delivery outcomes. This study analyzed MCH conditions and identified factors underlying policy implementation gaps using an integrated policy analysis framework. This descriptive-interpretive policy analysis integrated published national-level indicators from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey with a structured narrative review of scientific literature and national policy documents published between 2019 and 2025. Evidence was synthesized using four complementary frameworks: Evidence-Based Policy, Systems Thinking, Political Economy of Health, and Wicked Problem. Major discontinuities were identified across the maternal and newborn continuum of care. Although first antenatal care coverage reached 86.7%, only 17.6% of pregnant women completed six recommended visits. Complete neonatal and postpartum care coverage remained low at 40.5% and 26.8%, respectively. Maternal anemia affected 27.7% of pregnant women, while child stunting prevalence remained at 21.5%. The integrated analysis identified discontinuities in care and indicated that unequal local implementation capacity, output-oriented accountability, fragmented financing, referral-system limitations, and weak intersectoral coordination may contribute to implementation gaps. These interacting factors indicate that MCH challenges constitute a complex policy problem that cannot be addressed through isolated interventions. Improving MCH outcomes requires strengthening the continuum of care, enhancing service quality and referral systems, implementing outcome-based accountability, reinforcing intersectoral governance, and developing adaptive health- system management.

Abstract

Adolescent anemia remains a persistent public health problem despite widespread weekly iron supplementation, while evidence on integrated self-monitoring and digital adherence support in rural communities remains limited; this program evaluated a combined booklet and WhatsApp-based strategy. This community service program aimed to assess implementation of a TTD Monitoring Booklet integrated with a WhatsApp Group to support weekly iron supplementation adherence and improve hemoglobin status among adolescent girls in Dusun Bontopanno, Gowa Regency, Indonesia. A Community Development approach with a pretest–posttest design was implemented among 20 adolescent girls over 24 weeks. The intervention included anemia education, weekly tablet-consumption recording, WhatsApp reminders, motivational messages, interactive communication, and monitoring by facilitators and community health cadres. Adherence records showed that participants consumed 11–24 tablets during the intervention, with most consuming 17–23 tablets. Mean hemoglobin concentration increased from 11.83±1.04 g/dL at baseline to 13.22±0.90 g/dL after intervention (p=0.003). The proportion with hemoglobin <12.0 g/dL decreased from 45.0% to 5.0%. Integrating simple self-monitoring with accessible digital communication may provide a feasible, low-cost strategy for strengthening community-based weekly iron supplementation programs, particularly in rural and resource-limited settings.
