Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the connection between learner autonomy and English competence among 8th-grade students. A correlational design was employed using questionnaire surveys and students' scores in midterm and final examination. The study involved 75 students from a state junior high school in Surabaya. The questionnaire assessed learners' autonomy behaviors, goal-setting skills, and willingness to take responsibility for their language learning, while English competence was measured using students' report scores book. The findings indicated that the 8th graders exhibited a high level of learner autonomy, showing self-directed learning behaviors and taking individual responsibility for their language learning. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between learner autonomy and English competence suggesting that students with greater autonomy tended to demonstrate higher English competence. These results highlight the importance of nurturing learner autonomy to improve English competence. Educators and policymakers can use these findings to develop strategies and interventions that promote learner autonomy and enhance English language learning outcomes. Further research is recommended to explore other factors influencing learner autonomy and its relationship with English competence. Qualitative studies could provide deeper insights into students' perceptions and experiences regarding learner autonomy and its impact on their language-learning journey.

Abstract

Speaking is a God-given human ability to communicate with one another using voices and language that other humans can recognize. The education team hopes that students will be able to employ and master speaking strategies as a result of teaching and learning activities both inside and outside the classroom using the Technology SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) Model. The study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in student’s ability to speak English when using the SAMR Model compared to when using the Manual Model and also to learn about the experiences students have while learning to use the SAMR Model. This study conducts quasi-experimental research in order to collect significant improvement data on the use of the SAMR model to improve students' ability to speak procedure text. Taking the results of the pre-test and post-test scores on the type of presentation test and showing a high level of agreement between researchers and observers, the t-test and ANCOVA test showed a significant change in student learning outcomes, indicating that the SAMR Model follows the requested process and has an impact on student learning.

Abstract

The Multiliteracy Pedagogy Framework has been promoted to improve education in many countries; however, it is not popular yet in Indonesia. The framework relates to enhancing students' thinking skills. The other research indicated that the MPF did not positively affect students' critical thinking since the teacher did not have good knowledge about it; the teacher did not completely implement the four framework syntax in the teaching-learning process. The research, therefore, intends to reveal the implementation of the MPF for teaching critical thinking in the reading class of English Language Education (PBI) students. The research subjects are a lecture on the Reading subject and 20 students in the third semester at PBI Nahdlatul Ulama University of Sidoarjo (UNUSIDA). It is descriptive qualitative research using observation and questionnaire techniques to collect data. Descriptive statistics were used to generate summaries. The first implementation process is changing the lesson plan based on the multiliteracy pedagogy framework dimension. The activities are arranged in order from the cognitive functions in Multiliteracy; experiencing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and applying. The lecturer followed the syntax easily and completely. The result of students' assignments proves they can think critically about a text by giving comments supported with reasons, recommendations, data, conclusions, and evaluations.  Besides, the students enjoyed the instruction and responded well to the questionnaire, with 96,5% on average.

Abstract

Only little research has explored how information from alternative assessments especially portfolios might be best utilized in developing second language acquisition processes of a single individual student’s comprehension of simple present tense as one of grammar aspects. To understand these ideas more complete, a greater initial has to be set on a study. In addition, there must be a more prominent center on how teachers can implement alternative assessment especially portfolio assessment and how the information from these assessments can be utilized to inform and direct the learning process. Using mix method design, this study examined the language processing of two students (i.e., a high-ability learner and a low-ability learner) studying at grade seventh at MTsN 4 surabaya. According to the findings, There was difference in the degree to which the high ability student accurately noticed the answers of the questions (the use of s/es in simple present tense), rather than the low ability student. Both low ability and high ability learners could recognize the learning gaps before and after the learning process, and they notice their development system towards the target language. However, the high ability student performed better.

Abstract

Many studies use a developmental design for media such as flipbooks, but there is small research that focuses on the implementation of flipbooks for English lessons for formative assessment. This study aims to explain the procedure and the experience of using flipbooks for English lessons for formative assessment because it is fully integrated into the teaching and learning process. A teacher and 8_grade students taking an International Class Program (ICP) were observed and interviewed. This study shows that the implementation of using flipbooks for learning English for formative assessment can be implemented well in schools that have technological means to support them. Some students feel like it is fun and practical to use flipbooks but there are also some who even feel uncomfortable using flipbooks.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of expediting the acquisition of a second language (SLA), with a particular emphasis on techniques and approaches that improve the effectiveness of language learning. Based on ten participants—English teachers and students—in structured interviews, the study investigates the advantages, phases, and practical approaches for second language acquisition. It has been demonstrated that expediting SLA enhances communication abilities, scholastic achievement, and cognitive growth, providing useful benefits in professions like tourism. In order to improve the acquisition process, the study emphasizes the value of immersion, cognitive and metacognitive techniques, and using the first language. By being aware of these components, teachers can better adapt their instruction and help students become proficient more quickly. The results imply that in order to maximize language learning outcomes, a comprehensive strategy that takes into account individual learner characteristics and stages of acquisition is necessary and empowering students to actively participate in the global society.

Abstract

: The problem with this research is the lack of skills and thinking skills of humane education in the twenty-first century, especially of critical thinking and problem-solving. It is caused by several factors, one of the main factors is, learning that has not been oriented to the development of the twenty-first-century thinking skills and still only focuses on achieving partial-textual knowledge and not on the integrative-contextual understanding of the knowledge learned. In line with this, it takes an effort to improve the critical thinking skills of Indonesian education. The effort should be initiated by engineering the appropriate education model and on target, one of which is multiliteracies pedagogy. This research was conducted using the literature study discussing multiliteracies pedagogy to enhancing critical thinking skills in the twenty-first century. Literature review refers to a written synthesis of journal articles, books, and other documents that summarizes and critiques the past and current state of information about a topic, organizes the literature into sub-topics, and documents the background for a study. It can be concluded that the implementation of the multiliteracies pedagogy models is one of the alternative learning models that can improve critical thinking and problem-solving students in the university effectively in the areas of study taught compared to the most direct models used in English Language Teaching (ELT). Therefore, it is advisable to implement multiliteracies pedagogy in the practice of learning activities. Also, the application of multiliteracies pedagogy should be supported by the cooperation of all elements, both between teachers, management, and parents. This needs to be done to realize the effectiveness of quality learning, thus giving implications on the growth of potential students.
