Abstract

Background: The ability to adapt, imitate and modify knowledge in a learning context into another learning context is an important ability for students. However, the ability of pre-service English teachers to adapt their knowledge and skills from one course to other courses has not been studied. This research seeks to find out how pre-service English teachers in one state university in Indonesia adapt knowledge and skills acquired in the Syllabus Design (SD) and Developing EFL Materials (DEM) courses into ESP Program Design (ESP PD) and ESP Materials Development (ESP MD) courses. Methodology: This research is a mixed quantitative and qualitative study involving 54 students who have taken SD, DEM, ESP PD and ESP MD courses in 2022 in a state university in Indonesia. Fifteen of them also took part in a focus group discussion. Their answers to the semi-open questionnaire asking whether the 16 knowledge and skills learned in SD and DEM courses had been adapted were analyzed in a simple quantitative manner with percentages and modes. While the results of focus group discussion about how they adapted them were analyzed qualitatively for themes.Findings: The results of this study show that 15 knowledge and skills in SD and DEM courses were adapted by students into ESP PD and ESP MD courses. The participants adapted them by changing the context of the syllabus and materials the developed in SD and DEM from English at school to English for specific purposes in ESP PD and ESP MD especially when formulating learning objectives. They also developed general English materials into ESP English materials for certain occupations. These findings indicate that students master the contexts of ESP PD and ESP MD.Conclusion: It can be concluded that pre-service English teachers have excellent adaptation skills, which are done not by force, but by choice, to the peripheral component and for the benefit of students. Originality: This is the contribution of this research to students’ learning theory in ESP in English teacher education to add to Leko’s (2015) Evidence by Practice (EBP) theory.

Abstract

The present study examines students’ foreign language enjoyment and anxiety when reminiscing about the mind-mapping app in the English writing class. This research uses sequential explanatory mixed method to cover quantitative and qualitative elements of students’ emotions in foreign language writing. Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) questionnaires were distributed to 122 students at two universities in Indonesia, followed by interviewing some representative students. The findings revealed that students enjoyed the use of the mind-mapping app because they thought that they were free to design their own version of mind-mapping with interesting shapes and colours. However, indications of worrying about the mind mapping they made came from fear of being embarrassed in front of their friends. Additionally, the essence of competition also drove the students to be worried in the writing class. It made them feel that other friends had better mind maps. Second, even though having a group discussion in the writing class was interesting for the students, the fear of friends stealing ideas was detected. There was also an indication that the students were concerned about their achievement in writing class. It implies that teachers need to reminisce students’ ideas and not give negative comments in front of the class to avoid increasing students’ anxiety, but build up enjoyment instead to boost their devotion to the writing class.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBlended learning offers numerous benefits to language learning and teaching. The benefits attract higher education institutions to implement the blended learning for advancing students’ learning outcome. The need to boost students’ learning outcome occurs simultaneously with the demand for higher education institutions to measure students’ English proficiency. Consequently, certain English proficiency test is required for students’ admission and students’ graduation. Thus, this paper aimed to offer new blended learning technique to boost students’ learning outcome and simultaneously to prepare students taking certain English proficiency tests. English Discoveries (ED) from Edusoft, as a tertiary from Educational Testing Service (ETS) was selected as learning management system (LMS) due to its vast topics and language skills coverage. Comprehensive materials and diverse practices from ED were used to be the resources for test formats familiarity. This study has shown that ED materials and practices were similar with TOEIC Listening and Reading sections and TOEFL ITP Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading section. By learning in blended environment with ED, students were predicted to be more familiar with TOEIC and TOEFL ITP test formats. Being familiarized with the test formats should increase the possibility for students to have higher English proficiency score. Keywords: blended learning; test format familiarity

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss a critical reflection on the extent to which the use of automated written corrective feedback, in this case, Paper Rater, aligned with the actual classroom implementation, particularly viewed from students’ perception and their writing performance. Students perceive that the feedbacks given during the revision process are useful, particularly in teacher feedback, peer, and the Paper Rater. All students generally understand all the comments/corrections they get from their lecturer, and peer. Some students ignore the whole task after reading the peer's feedback. Students are behaviourally engaged with the multiple feedbacks they receive during the revision process. They also believe that the changes they make in the second draft make my writing better. The feedback they received from their lecturer makes them feel willing to do the task again and will overcome their mistakes with practice. Students are happy with the corrective feedback they receive from teacher, peer and Paper Rater. It clarifies that the students are cognitively engaged with the multiple feedbacks they received. The students also claimed that teacher-student conference is very helpful to mediate their confusion. Keywords: Robots, automated written

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of teacher video feedback on students’ academic writing and the students’ ability in writing by using this technique. The use of teacher video feedback was analyzed by using qualitative method. The results of the analysis reveals that the teacher video feedback has many benefits and can be used in the class. From 10 students’ academic writings analyzed, teacher video feedback also influences the students’ scores in content for eight students (80%), organization for six students (60%), vocabulary for seven students (70%), language use for eight students (80%) and mechanics for four students (40%). They also easily revise and edit their writings in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, and language use than mechanics due to unconstructive feedback given by the teacher in mechanics. Keywords: teacher video feedback, academic text, writing components, writing skill.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Dialogic education refers to the interaction occurred in a group work dialogue between teacher and students. It is not limited to written and verbal discourse; it also encompasses the broader notion that the interaction of diverse ideas can result in mutual insights. The concept of dialogic education involves how teachers elicit students' 'common sense' perspectives through classroom dialogue, interact with their emerging ideas, and assist students in overcoming misunderstandings during the learning process. By analyzing and creating dialogic interactions principals in the classroom, dialogic education not only stimulates broader and more comprehensive thinking and learning among students, but it also transforms classroom relationships, realigning the conventional power structure between teachers and students. This paper reviews the importance of the dialogic education by giving discussion on the models of the dialogic education, the approaches to study the dialogic education, and its implementation across countries. This paper also concludes the review by adding some future research direction according to the novelty and gaps from the earlier literature. Abstract

As an indispensable part of the Research Article (RA), an abstract should be well written. The variability of information included in a research article abstract will likely vary because of different discourses among academicians worldwide.  This paper compares the rhetorical moves manifested in research article abstracts written by American and Indonesian authors published in two reputable journals. Data presented are move sequences of 25 Research Article (RA) abstracts from the latest six years issue (2022-2016). The abstracts were selected from a particular discipline, English language teaching and learning, to control the variability. Each move was identified based on the lexical used. The findings revealed that Move 1-Move 2-Move 3-Move 4-Move 5 and Move 2-Move 3-Move 4-Move 5 were the most salient move patterns found in both groups. Interestingly, abstracts of American authors showed cyclicity patterns and had an additional Move. Move 3 and Move 4 were considered as obligatory Moves, while Move 1 and Move 5 could be positioned as optional Moves. The study also found that American and Indonesian authors' writing styles differed. The implication of this study is expected to strengthen the theory of rhetorical moves in the literature. Also, it can be scientific evidence for Indonesian scholars to get a reference of how native academicians write their abstracts in reputable international journals
