Abstract

This research aimed to find out the motivational regulation strategies employed by English education students when writing argumentative essays and to describe how English education students employ motivational regulation strategies when writing argumentative essays. This mixed-methods research used a sequential explanatory strategy. The research subjects were 95 English education students of a state university in Surabaya. They were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire. Nine of them were interviewed using a stimulated recall protocol. Questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics while the interview data were analyzed using spiral analysis. It was found that environmental structuring and emotional control are the most commonly used motivational regulation strategies when writing argumentative essays. They usually connect their essays to their interests in education and social issues even though most lecturers did not allow students to choose their topics. Performance self-talk is the rarest motivational regulation strategy used the participants as they do their essay only to meet the requirements of the course. It is suggested that students realize the benefit of argumentative writing skills for them and the lecturers give their students the independence to choose their topic, as it can motivate them to write.

Abstract

The current study is intended to explore the typology of other-initiated self-repair in term of its frequency of occurrence and to investigate the mechanism of self-repair in an academic setting. To obtain the required data, a classroom conversational analysis was conducted in which the researchers observed a group of graduate students (19 active EFL speakers) in a state university in East Java, Indonesia. Based on the qualitative data analysis, the results of the study revealed that all typologies of other-initiated selfrepair were used depending on the aims the interlocutors try to gain since all typologies have diverse aims and ways. Of all typologies, confirming checks were dominantly used by the participants. Regarding the mechanisms, three types of mechanisms were found; full two-cycle repair, background check, and short-cut repair sequence.

Abstract

Online learning has been popular to keep learners engaged and enhanced their reading comprehension. This study investigates the effectiveness of using online gamification-based Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) to improve learners' reading comprehension, motivation, and engagement. The research was conducted in an online English course for 30 undergraduate EFL learners. The course incorporated gamification elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards within the TBLT framework to encourage active participation and reading comprehension. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, focusing on students' performance, motivation, and engagement during the course. The findings revealed that gamification-based TBLT significantly enhanced learners' motivation and engagement by fostering a sense of achievement through rewards. Learners showed improved reading comprehension, demonstrating a better ability to understand, summarize, and analyze texts. Immediate feedback adjust students with strategies and improve their performance in real-time, while the collaborative nature of the gamified environment promoted social interaction and peer learning. The study concludes that gamification-based TBLT is an effective approach to enhancing reading comprehension in online learning environments. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of gamification on learner retention and the impact of task complexity on advanced learners.

Abstract

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has drawn considerable attention from researchers and educators seeking effective strategies to enhance language learning. One such approach that has gained traction is differentiated instruction which may be effective in enhancing students' second language acquisition process. To address this, a qualitative case study was conducted to examine the impact of differentiated instruction on students' second language (L2) acquisition. The study involved 15 participants who had undergone an English-intensive program at the university level. Data were collected through online open-ended questionnaires designed to capture cognitive, affective, and conative impacts. The findings reveal that differentiated instruction aligned with students' interests and abilities significantly enhances students' understanding, motivation, and active learning behaviors in their second language acquisition process. However, the study also identified challenges, including difficulties with independent acquisition and intrinsic motivation barriers. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of this research and develop strategies to address the identified challenges, ensuring a broader impact on student second language acquisition.

Abstract

The advancement of technology has a significant impact on teaching English nowadays. One of the tools that can quickly provide access to language learning is a mobile device. Moreover, the rising use of mobile devices or Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has been closely linked to the role of EFL teachers. Hence, this study aimed to investigate teachers' perspectives towards using the "Lets View" application for elementary students in the EFL classroom. The study was conducted by implementing a qualitative method. The instrument used in this study was questionnaires and interviews. The subject of this study was six English elementary school teachers who teach using the LV application in a private school in Surabaya. The results showed that using the new learning media, such as the LV application in EFL classrooms, is very useful for teachers. It is due to that this application can use mobile phones or iPad as the second portable blackboard for teaching reading, writing, and vocabulary and giving quizzes for beginner-level students. The researchers also revealed four obstacles EFL teachers face when implementing the LV application: internet connection, time limitation, lack of teachers' competence, and lack of student's English skills. Besides, several ways to increase students' learning engagement include allowing students to raise their hands, playing the game on the application, and guessing English vocabulary by giving pictures that appeared on it. To sum up, teachers viewed the LV application as suitable media for learning English at school.

Abstract

The study examined how, in the age of globalization, education had advanced to a new level where the sharing of information had transcended national boundaries and examined intercultural communication competency based on the experiences of foreign students in Indonesia. But educational establishments weren't completely equipped to meet these contemporary demands. Even though intercultural communication research is not new, concerns about emerging cultural diversity have only recently gained a lot of attention. As a result, intercultural communication competency (ICC) in educational sectors is still quite low and needs further investigation. The study used a descriptive qualitative methodology in conjunction with a case and phenomenological investigation strategy. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data, along with research material. Through the analysis of the interactive multicultural building model—which is bolstered by the ideas of intercultural communication and the internationalization of higher education—the research findings demonstrate the persistence of disparities and opinions, as well as an evaluation of the three-perspective model that serves as the main focus of the study. It consists of three processes: behavioral (intercultural adeptness), cognitive (intercultural awareness), and emotional (intercultural sensitivity). In addition, there are other difficulties that need to be overcome.

This research aims to find out how word targetss become assessments that can motivate foreign language students to enjoy reading. Extensive reading is not related to assessments that require foreign language students to be motivated to read. This research is qualitative research. The participants in this research were students in the A-class students of the English language and literature education study program at a university in Surabaya, Indonesia. The data collected is in the form of interview data and student reading profiles recorded in the Xreading application. Xreading is an application that students use as a learning management system in their extensive reading process. Xreading can also provide a place for foreign language students to determine what they want to read according to their pleasure. The results of this research found that students used target words as their external motivation to enjoy reading. The findings in this research also suggest ongoing monitoring by lecturers so that foreign language students continue to be motivated and enjoy reading so that their reading progress continues to increase.
