Abstract

This study aims to observe the tool deterioration following application of minimum quantity lubrication method (MQL). The designed MQL system is completed with an Arduino controller system which was able to be either manually-controlled or automatically-controlled. The tool used in this study is DCMT 11 insert type. The Taguchi method using the Orthogonal Array L9 design was used to compile the design of experiments with variations in depth of cut, coolant composition, and cooling fluid application methods. Each variable consists of three levels. Tool deterioration evaluated by observing it under an optic microscope from three sides of the tool. There are four levels of tool deterioration. The value of tool deterioration of each tool is the accumulation of each side view. ANOVA analysis found that depth of cut, cutting tool composition and method of applying coolant influence tool deterioration in percentage by 32.69%, 17.30 % and 12.82% respectively. Moreover, the minimum tool deterioration would be achieved when using the parameter combination of depth of cut of 1.6 mm; mixture composition of 3:7; and using the temperature-controlled MQL.

Abstract

The cutting force that reacts to cutting tool and workpieces will result deflection. Deflection is the cause of product deviation and vibration sources that can shorten the life of the cutting tool. Simulation of machining process is carried out to get an estimate of cutting force in some machining process conditions., then compare it to the experiments. The research aims to find out the influence of spindle rotary speed, feed rate and depth of cut on cutting forces in turning process with cutting tool HSS and workpiece Al 6061. This research uses three-dimensional simulation method using Third Wave AdvantEdge software. Following by comparison between the simulation with the experiments results. The simulation was in accordance to the experiments in term of the magnitude of the forces, from the biggest they are tangential, axial, and radial force respectively. Cutting force will decrease with increased spindle turning speed. Cutting force will increase with the rising feed rate and depth of cut. However, the simalution still highly deviate from the experiments at the rate of 71%, 44.3%, and 21.3% for axial, radial and tangential forces respectively. The possible cause of these high errors relates to forces measuring method in experiments.

Abstract

This paper concerns on drillability of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo (Ti-6246) from the point view of thrust force (Fz) & torque (Mz) using a TiAlN CVD coated carbide tool. The condition of the material was varied with three different heat treatments. Whereas, the machining parameters were varied in cutting speed, feed rate and cooling application method. Taguchi method L-18 was employed to design the experiments. Both type of forces, thrust force and torque, were measured using a Kistler dynamometer, and the data were analyzed using a Minitab 17 software. The thrust force was influenced by the cutting speed 24%, depth of drilling 21%, heat treatment 13%, and feed rate 11%. The torque was influenced predominantly by feed rate up to 94%. Coolant application has no effect on reducing both thrust force as well as torque.

Abstract

Measuring the forces that work during machining has been being concerned by researchers for years. There are three main forces that work in turning: thrust  force, axial force, and radial force. Thus, feeding force measurement is needed in machine manufacturing. This research attempts to develop measurement method through feeding force, using strain gauge sensor. The aim of measurement of feeding force in this research is to find out the influence parameter of machine towards feeding force. The research used experimental method with design experiment Taguchi to know the influence of machine parameters to feeding force in turning process. The measurement tool is strain gauge sensor connected to cutting tool. The workspace is alluminium 6061 with 15 mm in diameter and 150 mm in length. The  parameters for this research are speed rate (140 rpm, 215 rpm, and 330 rpm), feed rate (0,043 mm/r , 0,065 mm/r , and 0,081 mm/r), and depth of cut (0,2 mm, 0,4 mm, and 0,6 mm). The result showed that speed rate is the most significant parameter, with the contribution percentage is 92 %. Speed rate and feed rate parameter have insignificant influence. The contribution percentage of speed rate is 2% while the feed rate has % contribution percentage. The conclusion of the research is that the bigger number of speed rate, the bigger feeding force it will have.

Abstract

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) has been trending topic in industrial revolution 4.0. One technique and the most widely used AM is fused deposition modeling (FDM), which uses a melted filament and deposited it layer by layer. The common filaments used are made of PLA, PP, and ABS, which are available at the online market with variety of prices depend on the quality. It is an advantage if we can make these filaments. In filament manufacturing, the dimensional accuracy is one of the most important factors to comply with the existing 3D printers. The aim of this research is to fabricate a filament made of PP, then assessed the quality based on the accuaray of the targeted diameter of 1.75 mm. The manufacturing process used a self-made plastic extrusion machine. Variations were made on three variables with three levels each. There are (i) heater band temperature with a minimum and maximum range (150/170 oC, 155/175 oC and 160/180 oC), (ii) winding speed (13 mm/s, 16 mm/,s and 19 mm/s), and (iii) roll distance to the nozzle set point (200 mm, 500 mm and 700 mm). Taguchi L9 design was used to design the experiments and analysis.Minitab 19 was employed to find the S/N ratio and analysis the variance (ANOVA). The results of the analysis state that two parameters have a significant effect on the dimensions of the filament, i.e. temperature and roll distance to the nozzle, while, the winding speed has no dominat effect. The best accuracy of filaments diameter was achieved when applying a combination of temperature (160/180 ⁰C), the distance between the nozzle to the roll of 700 mm, and winding speed of 13 mm/s.

Abstract

This research aim is to find out the type of defects in production process of 600 ml bottle water at PT TIB Jember, then some attempts to resolve the problem. The p-chart of Statistical Process Control was employed. The control chart in September 2019 shown that some data beyond the ultimate control limit (UCL). The defects were categorized into three: whitening, deviate form, and broken. The Pareto chart revealed that the aforementioned defects were 59.7%, 26.36% and 15.07% respectively. By using the fishbone diagram some root cause of the defects were found. First, the unstable workplace temperature which disturbs the preform melting process prior to blowing, therefore causing whitening the bottle. Second, the heater which is often turned off while processing that caused deviate form. The frequently turned off the heater was caused by cracked-damage along with the hoses of overdue. Some suggestions were given, one of them was replacing the hoses by the new ones. The new control chart in October 2019 showed that all data within the limits following the replacement of the hose. It also reduced the rate of the defect by 0.19% from 0.74% to 0.55%.
