Abstract

In the era of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Indonesian job seekers must have English competency. Without mastering English language, they will be defeated by foreign ready-to-use job seekers. It can be detected in the job interview that their English competency is low. It is caused by a serious condition that they have no effective time to learn English in formal or non-formal English schools. Hence, an effort to improve their English speaking skill is needed. One of the ways to improve English speaking skill is by Self-Access Language Learning (SALL) through audio podcast-based learning media. By using audio podcast-based learning media, the job seekers can practice their English speaking ability by themselves anytime and anywhere. This research conducted an action research to investigate the improvement of English job interview skill of an interviewee with intermediate level of English, which was focused on the improvement of the interviewee abilities to answer the interviewer’s questions. To assess the quality of the English job interview, the researchers used an interview quality parameter designed by Overseas Programming and Training Support (OPATS) Peace Corps (2005). It is based on the assessment of function and content. The result shows that after two treatments, the job seeker (interviewee) improves her English job interview skill. The improvement can be seen from the changes according to the functional ability; it is shown from the change of answer style from descriptive into narrative way and the changes according to the content; it is shown from the change of answer content from daily routine into professional rational. Therefore, the researchers recommend the Indonesian job seekers to use audio podcast-based learning media by SALL to develop their English job interview skill.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find and analyze the use of translation techniques used by translators in translating various medical terms contained in the COVID-19 guidebook based on the theory from Rask (2008). The categories of medical terms used in this study are medical terms, epidemiological terms, and organizational terms. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through classifying and describing the medical terms in the COVID-19 guidebook according to the types of translation techniques based on Molina & Albir (2002). The findings show the type of translation technique, that has been found in this study, which gets a percentage of 63,54% as the highest frequency reaching 739 is Established Equivalence in all categories. Interestingly, it can be seen that translators are very concerned about the use of grammatical structures in the source language. Since the grammatical structure in the source language is different from the target language, translators also tend to use a more common language taken from the dictionary but equivalent to the target language.

Abstract

This paper discusses about the microstrategies of translation used by undergraduate students of English studies of Dian Nuswantoro University. Accordingly, these microstrategies are proposed by Schjoldager (2008). The use of Schjoldager’s microstrategies is based on three reasons, they are: 1) these microstrategies are more specific and thorough and also outnumber the other translation strategies; 2) the use of translation microstrategies fits with students’ status as non professional translators; 3) they can show the degree of creativity applied in a translation work. In order to get the data, a translation task was applied in this study. Therefore, both translation process and products became crucial elements in this study. As a result, six microstrategies are applied by the students. Surprisingly, students who achieve the GPA below 2.75 are more creative than students who achieve 2.75 GPA or above. Keywords: Microstrategies, creativity, translation strategies

Abstract

Currently, many universities and institutions provide Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers service (BIPA/Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing). However, some BIPA materials are considered out of date. This research is aimed at developing a BIPA material to provide an alternative for the existing BIPA materials. The material was developed based on an evaluation conducted on two existing BIPA materials. The BIPA material developed in this research contains multimedia and local content as to accommodate the existing materials that lack both components. Multimedia is needed since in this era of information, the need to catch up with current technology is highly required, while the local contents will facilitate BIPA learners to understand Indonesian expressions and way of thinking. The research suggests that technology and local cultures are essential in developing a BIPA material.   Keywords:  BIPA, material evaluation, material development

Abstract

Since meaning is categorized into literal and non-literal ones, semantics scholars have been agreeing that the focus of language research should be more of the non-literal ones. Non-literal meaning analysis is pivotal since the meaning cannot be interpreted literally. This study concerns about the analysis of non-literal meaning consisting of metaphors, connotative meaning, idioms, and figurative meaning in the novel “On the Bright Side, I’m now the Girlfriend of a Sex God”. Using a library research under the umbrella of descriptive qualitative research paradigm, the researcher sampled 60 pages of the novel. The sample calculation itself was in accordance with Wilumila’s proposition of systematic sampling (2002:7). The discussion suggests that non-literal meaning found in the novel is used to hide speakers’ innuendos behind the curtain, for example the humor element contained in the novel can be revealed without showing the intention to joke. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of non-literal meaning in the novel simply serves as hyperbolic and poetic functions.

Abstract

Education and training are now integral elements for all sectors and agencies operating within tourism industry. However, despite the importance of training, many educators and trainers have entered the industry without a well structured tourism training method. The teaching-learning cycle consisting of Building Knowledge of Field, Modelling, Joint Construction, and Independent Construction which is used in our formal educational level can also be used to give well understanding tourism training, particularly in English for hotels training. This study aims to introduce those already working in the industry, particularly hotel employees, to the cycle aiming to improve the participants’ speaking performance in English for hotels. Fourteen participants were taking part in this training. In addition, there were fourteen meetings in this training and the final assessment was conducted in the final meeting. The data were collected through the assessment by using the Format of the Cambridge ESOL First Certificate in English (FCE) spoken language test in the last meeting. In addition, the collected data from the final assessment were compared to the collected data from the early assessment before the treatment had been conducted and the parameter of success was evaluated by using the Holistic Rating Scale and the Foreign Services Institute (FSI) Analytic Rating Scale. The result shows that in the last meeting participants were able to increase their speaking ability. The outcome shows that the participants were able to set their rating almost 1-2 level(s) higher. In addition, the study shows that training by using the teaching-learning cycle thrives to improve and motivate most of the participants to be brave to speak or pronouncing the words or sentences better.

Abstract

Despite their consideration as impolite remarks in communication, swearwords play an inseparable part from linguistics repertoire. As defined by Aijmer (2002:12), swearwords “[express] the speaker’s attitude towards the situation spoken about, his assumptions, his intentions, his emotions”. Carrying ‘negative’ label makes swearwords the centre of attention. Interestingly, movies that have turned into public entertainment sphere blooms the use of swearwords. The statement is supported by Azzaro (2005:1) who states that “television is often blamed for the circulation of once forbidden expression, and films in particular get the blame.” To add fuel to the fire, Cressman et al (2009) has also noted a rising frequency of swearwords usages in Hollywood movies. With the increasing number of Hollywood movies in Indonesia, English swearwords phenomena cannot be neglected. However, deleting or even softening swearwords will put the artistic touch of cinematography at stake. In this context, translators, especially subtitle translators, play an important role in dealing with swearwords phenomenon. As to introduce translation students to this complex matter, the writer gave them a subtitling task of swearwords. Twenty students consisting of twelve males and eight females were involved in this project and ‘8 Miles’ movie was used as the translation task. Surprisingly, both male and female students did not try to soften or delete the use of swearwords. Most of the English swearwords were adopted into Indonesian swearwords.

Abstract

Tourism information media is aimed at giving positive image of Indonesian tourism to international tourists. In linguistics, especially in systemic functional linguistics, herewith SFL, the attempt to create positive or negative image of a text is studied through appraisal theory. It deals with how the authors position themselves and how the readers are positioned in the text. However, when dealing with bilingual texts, the meaning shift is highly likely because the translation of the source language may not have the same appraisal features, i.e. attitude, engagement, and graduation. Therefore, an SFL-based translation model is needed to accommodate this issue. As far as the authors observe, there is no SFL-based translation model accommodating tourism texts (Nugroho, Septemuryantoro, and Lewa, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to develop an SFL-based translation model by intertwining appraisal theory (Martin and Rose, 2013), translation techniques (Molina and Albir, 2002), and translation quality assessment (Nababan et al, 2012). By applying critical literature review, the authors analyzed the application of these theories in sample data taken from four information media, namely brochure, booklet, website, and book. Furthermore, by using Flesch readability test, the authors were able to select some parts of the media which are considered “hard to read”. The result of this study reveals that there is a minimum shift of appraisal features found in the bilingual tourism media. It happens because the translators mostly employ established equivalent technique to translate the texts. However, the positive result mentioned previously does not go hand in hand with the quality of the translation. Therefore, to bridge the outcome between the appraisal features of source and target languages reflected through the use of translation techniques and the assessment result of their translation quality, the authors need to generate a holistic SFL-based translation model.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is aimed at investigating the types of cohesive devices and their relationship which are found in an article of Time magazine entitled “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”. In conducting this study, the researchers employ descriptive qualitative as the research design. Meanwhile, in collecting the data, the researcher applied a purposive sampling method by choosing an article in an on line Time magazine. Meanwhile, the text was analyzed using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) especially those contributing to the cohesion of the text, including grammatical and lexical cohesion. The result of this study reveals that the text is “hang-together” which is described by the successfully use of cohesive devices. These patterns indicate that the writer of the article introduces the capacity to create a text with cohesion not only at the clause level but also to create text with better unity, flow and connectedness of information of the whole text. Besides, the use of cohesion in the text can create a relationship between language elements. Furthermore, the text of the article uses some simple cohesive devices such as reference, conjunction, repetition, and synonym.Keywords: cohesion, cohesive devices, language elements, magazine, SFLAbstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki jenis perangkat kohesif dan keterkaitannya dalam artikel majalah Time berjudul “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sedangkan dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan sampel purposive dengan memilih artikel di majalah on line Time. Sedangkan teks dianalisis dengan menggunakan linguistik fungsional sistemik (LFS) terutama yang berkontribusi pada kohesi teks, termasuk kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks yang dihasilkan oleh penulis “saling terpadu” yang digambarkan dengan berhasilnya penggunaan elemen perangkat kohesif. Pola-pola ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis artikel memunculkan kapasitas untuk membuat teks dengan kohesi tidak hanya pada tingkat klausa tetapi juga untuk membuat teks dengan kesatuan, aliran, dan keterhubungan informasi yang lebih baik dari keseluruhan teks. Selain itu penggunaan kohesi dalam teks dapat menciptakan hubungan antar elemen bahasa. Lebih lanjut lagi, teks tersebut menggunakan beberapa perangkat kohesif sederhana seperti referensi, konjungsi dan juga pengulangan, dan sinonim.Kata kunci: kohesi,  peranti kohesi, unsur bahasa, LSF, majalah, perangkat kohesif

Abstract

The study entitled “Revealing the Cultural Aspects in the poem Darmanto Jatman’s Istri discusses what cultural aspects are in a literary work of the poem. The purpose of this study is to find and prove the cultural aspects in the poem which consists of three aspects, namely the cultural concept, form, and components contained in the poem. The writer conducts a study with a qualitative descriptive model by determining the object of study in a poem text. The result of this study is an interpretative and explorative description of cultural aspects within the textual orientation of a literary work of the poem. The writer applies analytical techniques in literary criticism that prioritizes the terms of reference established by Taylor, Barker, Hoenigmann, and Kluckhohn in proving how well a literary work imitates life by finding cultural aspects in the poem.Keywords: concept; form; component; poem; cultural aspect.
