Abstract

Many traditional games in Indonesia are considered cultural heritage and are in serious decline; young generations no longer know about them. Serious games have been considered a potential educational tool for cultural heritage preservation. Lack of immersive experience due to over-focus on the learning content is a common problem in those games. Very little research also discusses cultural heritage serious game design frameworks. This study uses the appreciative fuzzy logic system (AFLS) to enhance the challenge-based immersive experience (CBIE) in the Joglosemar cultural heritage game. The AFLS provides autonomous challenges, such as enemy numbers and aggressive behavior, and the frequency of item appearances in the games using fuzzy logic with respect to the appreciative serious games (ASG) concepts. The ASG is the design guide for serious games that divides the game activities into 4-D: discovery, dream, design, and destiny. We use three ASG-based serious games to evaluate the CBIE produced by AFLS. The game experience questionnaire (GEQ) is used to measure the player experience, while the cross-validation is used to measure the AFLS performance. Results show that the AFLS enhances the CBIE. The study contributes mainly to provide reliable intelligent system for automated serious game design.

Abstract

As a vital component of cultural identity, language is under pressure as a result of globalization. This article discusses the creation of a website that provides a dictionary of Javanese phrases to help preserve and revitalize the language. In this study, we collect, categorize, and display Javanese words on electronic resources. In addition, the system usability scale (SUS) was used to conduct usability tests on the investigated websites to determine how user-friendly they actually were. Gathering terms from multiple sources, categorizing them, and developing a user-friendly interface with a search bar are all steps in the process of making a website. Users from all walks of life fill out the SUS questionnaire as part of the usability testing process. The test results reveal how well the website satisfies its users' requirements. Creating a database of Javanese words online and putting it through the SUS test is a great example of how technology can be used to help preserve a language and its heritage. It is believed that by taking this step, more people will become familiar with the Javanese language and become invested in its continued existence in the modern world. The usability testing results demonstrate that the development strategy and interface design effectively fostered a positive user experience. High scores on the SUS questionnaire, with an average rating of 80.25, indicate that users find the website satisfactory and user-friendly.

Abstract

Urban flooding is increasingly concerning due to climate change and rapid urbanization. Factors such as intensified rainfall, urban sprawl, and reduced permeable surfaces heighten flood risks, making efficient stormwater management crucial. This study focuses on developing a Decision Support System (DSS) to optimize green infrastructure (GI) placement in urban areas, aiming to enhance stormwater infiltration and reduce flood risks under climate change scenarios. The research reviews current strategies for GI planning and DSS in urban flood management. By integrating GIS tools, hydrological models, and climate data, the DSS identifies ideal locations for GI measures like rain gardens, bioswales, and permeable pavements, promoting effective stormwater management while addressing climate change. Hydrological models simulate stormwater behavior under varying rainfall conditions, and GIS maps potential GI sites within urban areas. Simulations of future extreme rainfall events assess GI performance under changing climate conditions. Results show significant reductions in stormwater runoff and flood risks, particularly in areas with high impervious surfaces. Challenges such as space constraints in dense urban areas, scalability of GI solutions, and long-term maintenance are discussed. The study concludes that integrating GI with traditional stormwater systems offers a comprehensive approach to urban flood mitigation, with the DSS serving as a key tool for urban planners and policymakers.

Abstract

This study explores the application of green hydrogen technology for industrial decarbonization, focusing on its techno-economic and environmental feasibility. A quantitative approach was used, incorporating system modeling of a solar-based hydrogen production system combined with electrolyzers. The techno-economic assessment involved calculating the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), estimating capital and operational expenditures (CAPEX and OPEX), and evaluating the system's energy efficiency and hydrogen output. The environmental impact was analyzed using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), comparing the carbon footprint of green hydrogen with fossil-based hydrogen. The results reveal that green hydrogen can reduce carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to fossil hydrogen, primarily due to the use of renewable energy for production. Additionally, the study found significant improvements in energy efficiency as electrolyzer performance and solar capacity increased. The LCOH is expected to decrease steadily as solar panel and electrolyzer prices continue to fall, enhancing the competitiveness of green hydrogen in the energy market. The findings also highlight the potential for heavy industries, such as cement and steel production, to transition from fossil fuels to green hydrogen, contributing to a cleaner industrial energy mix. This transition presents both environmental and economic benefits, with long-term savings from reduced fossil fuel dependency and lower production costs.

Abstract

This study focuses on identifying the problems faced by visually impaired students in teaching-learning  process of English syntax course at Faculty of Humanities, Dian Nuswantoro University in 2014. English syntax, as one of the subjects studied in the English study program, is considered as a challenging subject for visually impaired students as it involves visual perception, such as graphics and images. This research was a descriptive qualitative one. The researchers collected the data by using an in-depth interview. This involved 2 visually impaired students who experienced the learning process of English syntax and 3 lecturers of Dian Nuswantoro University. The discussion was limited on the issues around the needs for creating an accessible learning media and kinds of difficulties faced by the visually impaired students. From the in-depth interview, there are three major findings that are highlighted: a) the needs to overcome all inaccessible English syntax learning materials; b) general difficulties faced by visually impaired students in English syntax subject; c) technical difficulties in drawing tree structure diagrams. Then, these highlighted problems and findings are used as to formulate the recommendations of this study.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe and identify the translation techniques, and morphological processes used, by translators in subtitle conversations of characters in web-series that translators use in subtitle conversations of main characters in films. This research focuses on translation and is qualitative in nature. Statements that have morphological elements and are the results of conversations with informants are the type of data used in this research. Utilizing the Morphology process by Yule (1996), data analysis is carried out simultaneously with the data collection process. The researcher concluded that translation techniques by Molina & Albir (2002) were used in the process of transforming the Source Language into the Target Language; In total, there are five morphological processes and 16 of the 18 translation techniques are used. Among the translation techniques, Linguistic Amplification is 16.46%, Literal Translation is 11.39%, for Borrowing (Pure and Naturalization), followed by Equivalence Determination, Generalization, and Variation with the same amount, namely 10.13%, Substitution 6.33%, Amplification followed by Linguistic Compression, and Particularization 5.06%, Compensation and Transposition also have the same results with 2.53%, Adaptation followed by Description, Discursive Creation, and Modulation with 1.27%. Affixation, there is a Suffix of 35.71%, and a Prefix of 7.14%. Non-Affixation includes Compounding 28.57%, Borrowing 14.29%, Acronyms 7.14%, and Clipping 7.14% all of which are morphological processes. Translation techniques and the Morphology process are appropriate strategies to be used as the first choice in analyzing the results of this research because they can produce significant contributions in a practical context. Based on the research findings, several practical implications can be identified, including the results of this research can help develop an understanding of the phenomenon under study. for a translator or related parties, providing guidance and recommendations to a translator in developing policy strategies or best practices in relevant fields. The researcher also concluded that translation techniques and morphological processes can be interrelated with the meaning conveyed.

Abstract

Translation procedures and translation quality assessment can be used to assist translators when translating to get more accurate results. This paper aims to find out what legal language features and procedures of translation are and determine the quality of the resulting translation. The data sources used are words, phrases, and sentences that contain legal linguistic features such as archaisms, technical terms, phrasal verbs, doublets, and word reciprocity. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and was compiled based on the translation procedure framework of 17 Newmark (1988) followed by an assessment of the quality of the translation by Nababan (2012). From the analysis, the most frequently used legal language features are technical terms and archaisms. Meanwhile, the most widely used procedure in settlement agreement documents is literal translation with a total of 18 data and a percentage of 23.3%. The second order is naturalization with a total of 15 and a percentage of 19.4%. These two procedures are most often used by translators in translating settlement agreement documents. The use of literal translation procedures dominates. This, of course, affects the quality of the translation of this document. Based on the evaluation of the quality of the translation carried out, the level of accuracy and acceptability is 89%, and the readability is 78%. So, it can be concluded that the results of the translation of this settlement termination agreement document can be declared valid because it is translated in accordance with the applicable legal system based on the target language.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the micro-strategies and quality of translation used by the translator in the subtitle conversation of the main character in the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2”. The data sources used are words, phrases, and sentences found in the main character's utterances. The method employed in this study's method of translation was descriptive and qualitative in character of Schjoldager et al. (2008) followed by a quality assessment of the translation by Nababan, et al. (2012) with the following steps: 1) find the data analyzed in the film; 2) classify the micro-strategies and quality; 3) find the conclusions. There are some reasons for using these micro-strategies and qualities: 1) more detailed and specific; 2) more accurate in assessing the quality of the translation. The objectives of this study are: 1) to analyze and classify the data based on the category of micro-strategies; 2) identify the quality of the translation; 3) to find out what type of translation is used most often and what is the quality of the translation as a whole. As a result, the direct translation strategy is the one that translators utilize the most frequently, which reaches 77 data with a percentage of (42.55%). This strategy makes it easier for the target language because this translation emphasizes the translation of the words, so all source language information is conveyed correctly. The researcher also found that the direct translation technique has a higher percentage of translation quality than other translation techniques. The researcher concludes that direct translation is a translation that is more efficient to use for a translation because the target language quickly understands it.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the translation techniques that implemented at English version from Andmesh Kamaleng’s song titled Hanya Rindu which Emma Heesters translated it using the group of 18 techniques of translation from Albir & Molina (2002). This study implements a descriptive qualitative approach to examine the techniques which applicated on  translating Indonesian song lyrics into English. Data were collected from the English version of the song lyrics and the original Indonesian version. This study utilized content analysis and note-taking, the steps are as follows: 1) listen to and observe the lyrics of both versions of the song; 2) identify the categories from the usage techniques of translation; 3) make a conclusion. The study identified 9 out of 18 possible translation techniques used in 48 sample lyrics. The findings show that amplification is the most frequently used technique which is 12 times (25%), followed by literal translation 9 times (19%) and modulation 9 times (19%), linguistic amplification 7 times (15%), transposition 4 times (8%), reduction 3 times (6%), linguistic compression 2 times (4%), generalization 1 time (2%) and 1 time discursive creation (2%). The prevalent use of amplification indicates the translators' tendency to add contextual elements to enhance clarity and maintain the emotional context of the song, as well as to make the translated lyrics match the melody so that it is singable. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of song translation and expose the challenges faced by translators in preserving song messages across languages.

Abstract

This research discusses the translation quality of human translation particularly in the Indonesian - English language on a commercial website called Garudafood. This study evaluates the translation quality of the names of products that contain cultural aspects on the Garudafood website. The process of data collection uses a purposive sampling method with cultural categories theory by Newmark (1988). It is found that there are 39 data or names of foods that are categorized into material culture. Guided by past related research, this study employs the translation technique proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) to find out the most frequently used type of technique by translators in translating Garudafood products. Following the goal of this study, the researchers also use the translation quality assessment (TQA) theory by Nababan (2012). The overall result shows that the TQA of Garudafood product translation is averaging a 2.65 score, with established equivalent technique as the most frequently used type of translation technique by the translator. Furthermore, the Machine Translations tested by the researchers only reached the total average score of 2.01 and 2.18. By comparing with the analysis of using machine translation such as DeepL Translation and Google Translate, the researchers conclude that human translation produces a better-quality translation due to the translator's understanding of various contexts compared to machine translation which generates more objective translation. This statement is also supported by comparing with previous studies related to post-editing, machine translation, and human translation.
