Abstract

Cattle was introduced in Papua a long time ago. However, it was unpredictable to adapt to raise cattle. An explorative field study was performed in fifteen villages using participatory research to betterunderstand the dynamics of cattle performances. Cattle farming system has been categorized in threetypes, i.e. small- and medium-sized systems. They used ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis to analyze data. Thefinding of this research was that the three sizes of cattle farming in many components of good farmingpractices were similar (p>0.05). No large gap was found along the lines of farmers, cattle, and economicperformance. West New Guinea’s Tropical Livestock Unit was low and has the potential to increase dueto agribusiness potential. Better government services and other related stakeholders should narrow thelack of good agricultural practices.

Abstract

Understanding the real condition of pig farming in terms of management, feed and livestock production is vital to know. A study on the pig farming system has been carried out in Saukorem village, Amberbaken district, Tambrauw district, West Papua. The research method used is descriptive method with interview and observation techniques. A total of 30 respondents were successfully interviewed and observed the pattern of raising their pigs in the village of Saukorem, Amberbaken District. The results of the study found that the performance of farmers was dominated by elementary school education, with productive age and a sufficient number of family members as workers in the farmer's family. Pig farming business is still done extensively. Pig production is relatively low, this can be seen from the number of pigs in each age group. Pig breeds are obtained from other farmers in the village. The number of cages owned by farmers is still limited. The feed given to farmers comes from kitchen waste and agricultural products with a frequency of 2 times a day. Because the rearing system is still extensive outside the pen, the livestock are susceptible to diseases such as snoring and diarrhea. Livestock treatment is also still carried out by the farmers themselves.

Abstract

This study assessed the production performance and technical efficiency of independent broiler farmers in Sorong Regency, Indonesia, using a stochastic frontier framework. The objective of the research is to quantify the influence of major production inputs on output, estimate technical efficiency levels, and evaluate the extent to which inefficiency contributes to variations in broiler performance under open-house production conditions. Primary data were collected from active broiler farmers and analyzed using a Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier production function estimated through maximum likelihood procedures to obtain input elasticities and individual efficiency scores. The results indicated that broiler production performed competitively, with a performance index of 456, low mortality, and an efficient feed conversion ratio. The production frontier estimation showed that day-old chicks and feed were the dominant determinants of output, while medication, electricity, and fuel inputs did not exert statistically significant effects. Average technical efficiency reached 0.89, with 86.6 percent of farmers operating at high-efficiency levels. The gamma parameter of 0.83 indicated that most output variation stemmed from technical inefficiency rather than random disturbances, underscoring the relevance of managerial capacity in shaping production outcomes. The study concludes that improving the quality of biological inputs and strengthening managerial practices is essential for sustaining productivity among independent broiler farmers. The findings provide empirical guidance for technical training programs, input quality improvement, and targeted interventions to enhance production efficiency in eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS Indigenous communities read animal signs as early warnings for nature events Shared experiences shape how different animal behaviours gain meaning Local wisdom shows animals as sensitive partners in human survival   ABSTRACTObserving animal behavior and daily activities can help humans gain knowledge and derive practical benefits. A mixed-method approach, combining desk-based study and telephone interviews, was employed to collect data from seven major Papuan tribal groups. The desk study involved the collection of approximately 2,000 references published between 1980 and 2020 using keyword-based searches conducted with specialized software. Data were also provided by leaders from the seven major communities. The collected data were analyzed using Rayyan, VoS Viewer, Crammer’s Phi, and Microsoft Excel. The principal findings indicate that 14 publications addressed topics related to animal signaling and community beliefs. The animals recognized by the seven major tribal group as exhibiting signals included mammals (52%), fish (8%), reptiles (12%), amphibians (8%), birds (4%), and insects (16%). Animals were reported to convey signals through vocalizations (sounds), appearance, body parts, wastes, tracks, constructed objects, and odors. The result of Crammer’s Phi analysis showed (168) = 219.48, P = 0.0046, df = 168,  = 0.05 and 0.01, and φc = 0.0105 (1%). This results indicate a significant association between perceived values in interpreting animal signals and tribal community groups in West Papua. A Cartesian graph demonstrated low-to-high levels of both animal signaling and beliefs. Beliefs and practices related to animal sensitivity and communication vary across cultures and communities worldwide. Many indigenous communities maintain a deep spiritual connection with nature and animals, viewing them as sentient beings with their own forms of communication and sensitivity.

Abstract

Monitor lizard (Varanidae) has dispersed widely in Indonesia, even in Papua. Papua contents of six species. It’s distribution, abundance, both in land and island have been known yet, even carrying capacity of feeding relative limited. However, species extinction rates in nature were increasing both in it. This research was done in Papaya Island in Teluk Cenderawasih National Park, Nabire, Papua since 24th -25th October 2005. Descriptive method was done to answer this study. This research resulted that in Papaya island contents only one species that is Varanus indicus. The V. indicus chosen same habitat in southern part of Papaya island. This species dispersed on 0-4 m above sea level, humidity about 78.6%, and temperature about 23.90C. Vegetation was dominated by coconut (Cocos nucifera), bitangur (Calophyllum inophyllum) and tikar (Pandanus sp.), papaya (Carica papaya, and ketapang (Terminalia catappa). V. indicus chosen Megapodius reinwadt nest as nesting area. Population of V. indicus was estimated as much 36.3 ≈ 36 pieces by King Method. The nest of V. indicus placed in Cassuarina sp. tree where cutting down. The diet of V. indicus was found such as megapods, sea birds, lizard (sauria), butterflies and bats (Macrochyroptera). People were caused threatened both direct and indirect toward the V. indicus existence. © 2006 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: diversities, ecology, Varanus indicus, Papaya island, Nabire, Papua.

Abstract

Abstract. Lekitoo MN, Lekitoo T, Santoso B, Saragih EW, Yoku O, Hariadi BT, Iyai DA, Sonbait LY. 2026. Forage species diversity and composition, and carrying capacity of rangelands in Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 27 (1): d270111. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270111. Rangelands and natural pastures serve as the backbone of livestock feed. However, there is limited empirical data on their productivity and capacity to sustain livestock populations in lesser-known regions, such as Papua. The study aims to assess the botanical diversity and composition of forage in natural rangeland in Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua, Indonesia, and to evaluate its carrying capacity. Botanical sampling was conducted by establishing 30 sample plots measuring 1×1 m2 in areas of 64 ha within the Warayaro natural rangelands. Forage productivity was estimated based on botanical composition, fresh forage, dry matter, and total digestible nutrients. The findings reveal that the rangeland in Warayaro is a heterogeneous pasture comprising 5 types of fodder, including 4 grasses and 1 legume species. Non-native species from 3 families dominated the pasture, namely Paspalum dilatatum, followed by Paspalum conjugatum, Centrosema pubescens, Eleusine indica, and Cyperus rotundus. The botanical composition consisted of 86.7% grasses and 13.3% legumes. Average forage yield is 2.0 t FM, 0.4 t ha-1 and 1.02 t ha-1 TDN. The existing Warayaro forage has a carrying capacity for cattle of 0.4 AU ha-1 yr-1 (FM), 0.3 AU ha-1 yr-1 (DM) and 0.8 AU ha-1 yr-1 (TDN). The Warayaro natural pasture has low production potential (264.7 kg TDN per 100 kg of livestock body weight) and moderate nutritional quality, with a protein content of only 11.2%. The Warayaro pasture is more suitable for growing young stock to reach a body weight of 182 kg. The carrying capacity of the rangeland for cattle and goat is 32 head yr-1 is 320 head yr-1, respectively. Key ecological recommendations include increasing the proportion of legumes through reseeding, implementing rotational grazing, and monitoring and controlling Cyperus rotundus to prevent competitive exclusion of forage species.
