Abstract

In order to interact and work with diverse communities in this deeply interconnected world and to help solve such global issues as human rights abuse, ecological damage, economic poverty and extremism, we need to continually recognize and exchange values/perspectives across cultures and boundaries. Border-crossing is a complex but necessary web of interactions and dependencies among nations to create global peace and justice. Taiwan-Indonesia border crossing is insufficient, given that no formal diplomatic relation exists between the two countries excepting the informal such as trade and investment, people-to-people relations, education and popular culture industry. Taiwan and Indonesia similarly shared long history of nationalism, anti-communism, and democratization, but it remains under studied how these historical comparisons are reflected through literature. This paper will argue that transnational translation of literature can connect and define both nations better so as to enhance global connectedness. Thus, the crossing of the cultural boundaries by Taiwanese and Indonesian co-cultures through the translation of diverse literary works may give hope for future development of a mutual, emphatic understanding of each other’s cultures. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.010209

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the extent to which micro small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) apply Environmental Ethics in their business praxis. The data sources were field observations and in-depth interviews with one catering business in Yogyakarta known for its use of local food products and zero preservatives. This qualitative narrative research aims to answer how and why this selected MSME has demonstrated environmental awareness. It further examines the implications of this praxis toward the business’s sustainability. The data analysis reveals that, first, the business owner, driven by internal motivation, uses environmentally friendly products to care for customers’ satisfaction and need of healthy food. Secondly, the business, however, has not adhered to such external motivation as cutting no trees for firewood. Regardless of its damage for the environment, the use of firewood reduces production cost and no prohibition for cutting trees is thus far enacted. This study concludes that more efforts should be made to cultivate ecological concerns as the core of sustainable entrepreneurial skills.DOI:10.24071/ijhs.2019.030106

Abstract

Scrutiny of unequal power-relations between the ?East? and the ?West? in politics, culture, economy, and various aspects of life is the concern of postcolonial studies. Foucault's concept of power is central in postcolonial theory with which Edward Said is celebrated for his dismantling of Orientalist views. Postcolonial literature, likewise, has contributed to the growth and development of postcolonial criticism. The first objective of this article is to give a brief overview of different terms attached to the word ?postcolonial?, i.e. postcolonial literary criticism, postcolonial literature and postcolonial theory, since these terms enrich one another theoretically. The second objective is to discuss postcolonial hermeneutics as a reading tool to examine various mundane practices in Southeast Asian postcolonial society. The purpose is to achieve a balanced, reciprocal exchange of perspectives while providing legitimacy for alternative interpretations to the hegemony shown in ?Western? discourse. Citing traditional ways of conflict resolution and eco-friendly land management as examples, this article concludes that postcolonial reading may shed light on how socio-religious conflicts, hybrid experiences of faiths, and other social practices operate and get their respective meanings in postcolonial countries across Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study looks at how rivers, resistance and women’s struggle intertwine with each other in 3 fictions set in, respectively, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Not only has a river become life-giving forces, but it is also a locus of diverse social conflicts where women are often the most victimized yet survived. Making use of ecofeminism and related theoretical concepts such as Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’ on the environment and human ecology, this study examines the female characters and their ordeals in the three fictions discussed. This study reveals that first, ecological economy depends on water sustainability where women try very hard to protect nature against degradation. Secondly, abuse of women is seen in parallel with abuse of nature. In the end, this study concludes that the women’ resistance against patriarchy confirms the theoretical relevance of ecofeminism for the reading of Southeast Asian fictions.

Abstract

The main aspect of translation is how one’s expression in one language is replacedwith an equivalent representation in another language. The representation should beequivalent in terms of its stylistic, referential, and linguistic features. Whether there is a needfor a translation text to be classified as "weak," "fair" or "good," its acceptability and themeans of determining it as well as how to improve one’s translation quality were what weinvestigated in this article. National and international translation standards now exist, butthere are no generally accepted objective criteria for evaluating the quality oftranslation. Therefore, such an assessment is needed to reveal the quality of the translation ofa text from Indonesian into English. This article aimed to assess it using an alternativeinstrument and suggestions on how to improve translation quality which the authors adaptedfrom NAATI (National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters). Theyadopted the stylistic, referential, and linguistic components of NAATI’s translation qualityassessment. Based on the limited data that they had, a number of improvement procedureswere recommended. Keywords: assessment, text, translation quality and improvement

Abstract

The present study is aimed at providing translating theory of English into Indonesian and vice versa. In achieving the aim, content analysis of expressive (poem), informative (report andacademic), and vocative text (advertisement) is applied. The analysis is based on threeaspects consisting of grammatical structure, cultural words, and writing mechanic. The resultshows that the translator needs to adapt the grammatical structure, cultural words, and writingmechanic of source language into target language. However, there are exceptions in culturalwords and capitalization. In translating from English into Indonesian especially in academictext, some English words are assimilated into Indonesian (foreignization). In translatingIndonesian poem into English, the target text capitalization imitates source textcapitalization. Besides, for the purpose of attractiveness, persuasion, and effectiveness intranslating Indonesian advertisement into English, different words are prefered but themeaning is retained. Keywords: translating theory, English, Indonesian
