Abstract

The Philosophy of translation is excluded from the framework of translation studies. Nevertheless, it is actually essential for developing the theory and practice of translation aswell as solving both internal and external challenges toward the theory and practice oftranslation. Hence, this article proposes the inclusion of philosophy in the framework andoffers a communicative-functional paradigm as the philosophy of translating from Indonesianinto English and vice versa. This paradigm construes translation as interculturalcommunicative act directed by the target-side purpose. It is rooted ontologically as therecodification of matrix code into target code which results in what Ricoeur calls as theequivalence without identity, epistemologically with the employment of cluster concept andaxiologically by directing intercultural mediation with three ethical principles i.e. the primacyof purpose, the loyalty to people and the respecting difference. In Indonesia especially inYogyakarta, based on the interview conducted to professional translators in PéMadInternational Translation, this paradigm has been internalized by Indonesian translatorswithout conscious reflection of the paradigm as the philosophical foundation of theirtranslation practices. Keywords: translation, philosophy, communicative-functional paradigm

Abstract

Pagu is an endangered  Non-Austronesian  language spoken  in North Halmahera, Indonesia. This research is an endeavor to save the language specifically through documenting and studying its proverbs in order to reveal the linguistic patterns and meanings of these proverbs. A mixed qualitative and quantitative method is applied to see their structure and characteristics (Angouri, 2010; Rasinger, 2010). It presents a number of stylistic and structural features of Pagu proverbs based on the preliminary research of 2012-2014 (D. Perangin-Angin, 2013) and recent online communication with one of the Pagu  community leaders. The findings show that, first, metaphor and simile are the most common features in Pagu proverbs that function to express politeness through indirectness (Brown Levinson, 1987; Thomas, 2014). Second, structurally it was found out that Pagu proverbs do not follow the typical Europeans structure such as relationships between elements (Dundes, 1975), number of clause, types of sentences (Mac Coinnigh, 2015), and types of figurative languages (e.g. Eaglestone, 2000). But rather, Pagu proverbs vary in different structures that intend to express the Pagu culture and thought namely indirect politeness.

Abstract

Poetry is a language of devotion. It is the melody that resonates from one’s pure conscience. Being the most important and richest part of our spiritual practice, people read and write poems to help them gain understanding about themselves, each other, and the world around them. Examining world poetry, mainly from America, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka which  tell about the presence of God, this article attempts to find out how God the Creator is present and represented, focusing as it does on the connection between poetry and spiritual exercises. Each of the seven poems under discussion is read by considering Ignatian Spirituality of which the core is “Finding God in All Things”. The selected poems show that God can indeed be found in three main spots. First, God resides in the universe. The presence of God in nature is a common theme shared by the poets discussed. Second, the speakers of the poems find God within themselves. They find God through discretion. Third, some of them find the face of God in that of other people because humans are created in His image. The poems open an awareness that God is present in the sufferings of others. In conclusion, poetry serves as both prayers and spiritual exercises that can improve people’s inner compassion and justice.

Abstract

This paper examines the interface of economic hardship, sexual repression, and fear of aging in Tennessee Williams plays of the 1950s. Set in modern capitalist society of America, The Rose Tattoo (1955) and Sweet Bird of Youth (1959) depict the characters who are thwarted in their search for freedom that can be equated with the celebration of material prosperity and eternal youth. Using Eric Fromms view of freedom-as-frightful in modern society, the discussion will reveal the entrapment of self-deception in the characters unrealistic hope to stay young and productive in a commercialised society where sex is a commodity.

Abstract

Abstract

Fostering ecological awareness in studying economics is important, bearing in mind that business today is to maintain the sustainability of the earth’s resources. This study examines Heinrich Böll’s “The Balek Scales” and Tayeb Salih’s “A Handful of Dates” to see whether the two short stories are suitable for teaching business and environmental ethics to both students of English and economics. Using content analysis method, this library research uses principles in sustainable business ethics to interpret the two stories. Data analysis shows that both stories exemplify concepts such as autonomy, integrity, justice, professionalism, and environmental awareness. This study concludes that the short stories discussed provide pedagogical tools to teach the basic concepts of professional and environmental ethics in the business world all students today need to know.

Abstract

This research seeks to discuss how child characters navigate their interactions with the adults in two short stories set in the predominantly Islamic society of Sudan and Indonesia. It examines Tayeb Salih’s “A Handful of Dates” (1964) and Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s “Circumcision” (1950) by locating both texts in World Literature which is largely Western or Eurocentric. Both short stories belong to the genre of initiation fiction often included in world literature anthologies. This paper argues that both authors help contribute to not only the rethinking of World Literature concept and circulation thereof, but also balanced view of heterogonous, multicultural Muslim society. Using post-Genette focalization theory as conceptual framework, this study finds out that the child narrators play distinct roles as (1) the perceptual focalizer to reveal injustice and frivolity of the adults’ world; (2) the ideological focalizer to make meaning of children’s faith through their relationship with the grown-ups.

Abstract

Spoken by a few members of the Pagu ethnic group in North Halmahera province, Pagu is one among endangered languages in Indonesia worth saving from extinction (Perangin-Angin, 2018). This study examines the preservation of Pagu by caring for the literary wealth in the language, i.e., folktales. Using Ecosophy as a theoretical trajectory, the analysis of the five Pagu folktales studied show that (1) Two creation fables are anthropocentric because the intention is to teach and impart values to people; (2) The other two are morality tales calling for people's care for and attention to the environment and all the ecosystems which have so far supported people's life. This study concludes that not only do traditional tales enhance language research and character education, they also deliver transformative power to call for an ethic of care – caring for the language and caring for the environment. Thus, the maintenance of the local culture, such as folktales, complements the language preservation efforts.

Abstract

English literature studies in Indonesia has to undergo a paradigm shift, given the demographic change of users and providers of English, to say nothing of the growing interests in Asian literature written in and/or translated into English. Mindful of our postcolonial experiences in today's cultural and political context, the use of more literary pieces from Southeast Asian countries in English Literature studies is all the more important. This paper locates Southeast Asian literature within the development of English as a Lingua Franca. Characteristic of our postmodern age is the recognition of people as human; and, in this case, Asian people as individuals, multilingual and multicultural subjects. As such, reading and evaluating works from the region may help develop a deeper understanding when defining our own place in relation to other people. It is through engaging in contextual and humanistic literary experiences that we measure and value the connection between literature and life.
