Abstract

This study discusses moderate Islam in West Java based on the perspectives of five mainstream Islam mass organizations: Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Persatuan Umat Islam, Persatuan Islam, and Jami’atul Washliyah, concerning intolerance cases in the province in recent years. These five Islam mass organizations have roles in West Java and their perspectives are also necessarily needed to consider especially in the middle of radical-liberal, secular-fundamental streams. The study employs the Quintan Wiktorowicz socio-religious research methodology through documentation, observation, and interview techniques. The results show that the cases of intolerance in West Java have not yet resolved. There are internal, cross- and inter-religious factors both to promote and to inhibit this issue. Therefore, maintaining and giving space to the moderate Islam mass organization is suggested, as a frame in forming the behavior and religious pattern in the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of oligarchy in Indonesian politics, focusing on how political power is concentrated in the hands of economic elites and the resulting implications for democratic governance. It specifically explores the role of political parties and government policy under President Jokowi in reinforcing oligarchic structures. A descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach is employed in this study. Data is gathered from academic publications, news reports, books, and legal documents to critically assess the patterns and impact of oligarchic dominance in Indonesia’s political system. Political parties in Indonesia often operate as tools for oligarchs to maintain their power and influence. Although President Joko Widodo was initially viewed as a reformist leader, his administration has become increasingly aligned with oligarchic interests. Legislative changes, including the revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law (KPK Law), the enactment of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation, and the amendments to the Criminal Code (KUHP), have provided legal protection and advantages to political and economic elites. To reduce the influence of oligarchy in politics and ensure that power genuinely lies with the people, Indonesia must adopt several reform strategies. These include strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing transparency in political financing, promoting accountability in governance, and increasing meaningful public participation. The future of democracy in Indonesia will depend on the country’s ability to restrain oligarchic power and uphold democratic values rooted in public accountability and civic engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze in depth the process of the decline and collapse of the Mughal Dynasty (1526–1857), an important event in the history of South Asia that was influenced by a variety of complex factors, both internal and external. Using historical research methods that include heuristic stages, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the study relies on primary sources such as Ain-i-Akbari, Akbarnama, and Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri, as well as secondary literature from relevant modern historians. The results of the study show that the collapse of the Mughal Dynasty was not caused by a single factor, but was an accumulation of various structural problems and geopolitical dynamics. Significant internal factors include the weakening of the jagirdari system, repeated succession crises, corrupt bureaucracy, and weak leadership after Aurangzeb's reign. Meanwhile, external factors included invasions from Persia and Afghanistan, the rise of regional powers such as the Maratha and the Sikhs, and the aggressive expansion of the British East India Company, which gradually eroded Mughal sovereignty. This study concludes that the collapse of empires is the result of adaptive failures in dealing with structural challenges and changes in the regional political-economic landscape. The implications of this study broaden our understanding of the dynamics of imperial power disintegration and the transition to colonialism in India. This paper lies in a holistic and systematic approach that links the collapse of the Mughals with the theory of the fall of empires from the perspective of global historiography. Contribution: By linking the collapse of the Mughal Empire to broader theories on imperial decline and the transition to colonialism, this research broadens the understanding of imperial disintegration and enriches global historiographical perspectives on empire fall.

Abstract

Abstract This study describes the concept of religious moderation according to Yusuf Al-Qardhawi, Quraish Shihab, and Salman al-Farisi. This research is caused by the current reality that religious moderation is considered a new understanding in Islam, even though religious moderation has existed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. So this is first step to examine the concept of religious moderation. The type of research used is qualitative with method of library research (library research) through the stages of observation, and library documentation. The results and discussion of this study is that the Prophet Muhammad SAW., has taught the concept of religious moderation through the Koran and his Sunnah. The results of this study indicate that both Yusuf Al-Qardhawi, Quraish Shihab, and Salman al-Farisi agree that: first, religious moderation mediates between religious understandings without losing track of the ash-shalah. Second, religious moderation can mediate differences in understanding of religion, avoiding the occurrence of radicalism and excessive fanaticism in religion for adherents. This research is important as a basic reference in practicing the essence of religious teachings which place more emphasis on human values and spreading the common good. Abstract

This study aims to describe the continuity and role of this myth in the religious life of the local community, as well as to understand how this myth intertwines with the Islamic teachings they adhere to. This study uses an anthropological approach and qualitative research through literature review, participant observation, and in-depth interviews with community leaders. The analysis is conducted using Claude Lévi-Strauss's structuralism theory, which views myth as a cultural mechanism for managing the fundamental contradictions of human life. The results show that the myth of "cadu ka haji" serves as an interpretive tool in understanding socio-spiritual phenomena and serves as a bridge between local traditions and religious teachings. The Cipaku community has developed a unique way of practicing religion, where faith, myth, and ancestral values synergize in daily practice. The implications of these findings emphasize the importance of a cultural approach in Islamic propagation and the preservation of local wisdom. The originality of this study lies in revealing the syncretic dynamics between Islam and local Sundanese culture, which have not been widely explored in previous academic studies.
