Abstract

Hadith Criticism (Naqd al-Ḥadīṡ) is an important discipline developed by scholars to examine and verify the authenticity of narrations claimed to originate from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Its main objective is to differentiate between Sahih (authentic) hadiths and Da'if (weak) or Mawdhu' (forged) hadiths. This research aims to analyze and compile the practical stages of Hadith Criticism so that it is easily understood by beginner students. By using a descriptive-analytical literature review method on the foundational books of Hadith science, this research summarizes the criticism process. This research shows that Hadith Criticism is an integrated, two-dimensional process. First, Sanad Criticism (Chain of Narration), where the Hadith must fulfill five main conditions (the chain is connected, the narrator is just ('ādil), ḍābiṭ (strong in memory), is not shādhdh (anomalous), and is not mu'allal (possessing a hidden defect)). Second, Matn Criticism (Hadith Content): Examining the conformity of the hadith's content with the Qur'an and established principles of Shari'ah. The conclusion of this research is that the systematic understanding and application of the Hadith Criticism methodology are fundamental prerequisites in Islamic studies. This research contributes by presenting this complex methodology as a step-by-step guide to enhance the students' ability to filter and accept the pure Sunnah of the Prophet.

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the sources of hadith within the Shia tradition, focusing on major hadith collections such as al-Kafi and Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih. The methodology of hadith evaluation in the Shia tradition is examined in depth and compared with the Sunni tradition of source criticism. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis methods applied to primary and secondary literature related to Shia hadith collections. The findings reveal significant differences in the methodology of hadith criticism between Shia and Sunni traditions, particularly regarding the concepts of ‘adalah (narrator’s integrity), isnad (chain of transmission), and the authority of narration. The Shia tradition places special emphasis on narrations from Ahl al-Bayt and the doctrine of the infallibility of the Imams, which distinguishes it from the Sunni perspective. The study concludes that, despite fundamental methodological differences, both traditions demonstrate scholarly rigor in ensuring the authenticity of hadith as a source of Islamic law, albeit through distinct epistemological approaches.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of hadith criticism among Western scholars by highlighting its challenges and opportunities for contemporary Islamic studies. This research discusses how early Western scholars such as Ignaz Goldziher and Joseph Schacht viewed hadith not as divine revelation but as a socio-political construction that emerged after the Prophet’s era, thus casting doubt on its authenticity and authority. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The primary sources consist of Western scholars’ works on hadith and the responses of contemporary Muslim scholars to them. The analysis is conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, describing the views of the Orientalists and analyzing their implications for modern hadith studies. Although Western hadith criticism raises doubts about the sources of Islamic law, it also provides significant opportunities for the development of contemporary hadith studies. Such criticism encourages Muslim scholars to strengthen classical methodologies with modern scientific approaches and opens space for cross-traditional academic dialogue. Through the integration of classical isnād criticism methods and modern historical approaches—as undertaken by contemporary Muslim scholars such as Jonathan A.C. Brown and Muhammad Mustafa al-A‘zami—hadith studies can now develop in a more comprehensive, objective, and contextual manner. Therefore, Western hadith criticism is not only a challenge to Islamic authority but also a means of reflection and methodological reinforcement in global hadith scholarship.

Abstract

Globalization has brought significant changes in various aspects of life, including religious understanding and practice. This study discusses the position and role of Hadith in facing the challenges and opportunities arising from the current of globalization. Through a qualitative approach with literature analysis, this research identifies that the context of Hadith in the globalization era is related to two aspects: the development of Hadith studies from time to time up to the current development through digital technology and social media, and its application in facing the era of globalization. The results of the study indicate that to deal with these challenges and opportunities, the critical study approach to understanding Hadith through the utilization of technology must refer wisely and prudently to the methodological concepts formulated by previous scholars (ulama terdahulu) in order to support the strengthening of Hadith's authenticity. Furthermore, Hadith, with the development of its studies and applications exemplified by the ulama mutaqaddimin (earlier scholars) and muta'akhkhirīn (later scholars), remains always relevant to the progress of the times.
