Abstract

Wastewater production from the coffee agroindustry is generally brown. Melanoidin contents cause it and the high content of organic matter in coffee processing wastewater can impact water pollution. Turbid coffee processing wastewater can prevent sunlight from entering the water if it is channeled directly into water bodies without prior treatment. The research aims to improve the quality of coffee processing wastewater using the photo Fenton method, which combines catalyst reagents from H2O2 and FeSO4. The stages of the research consist of adjusting the pH of the process, combining H2O2 and FeSO4 dosages, irradiating using UV light, settling, and analyzing wastewater quality improvements with parameters i.e. Total Suspended Solid (TSS), turbidity, color, pH, and Chemicals Oxygen Demand (COD). The research results show that adding H2O2 and FeSO4 treatment in the Fenton photo can improve the quality of coffee processing wastewater. H2F1 treatment (H2O2 0.2 M and FeSO4 0.0015 M) is the best alternative for reducing TSS, turbidity, color, and COD parameters. The percentage reduction values for TSS, turbidity, color, and COD is sequentially 95.55; 98.40; 93.97; and 72.47 %. The combination of H2SO4 and FeSO4 catalysts can be used as an alternative tertiary method for coffee agro-industrial wastewater purification which is effective and efficient.

Abstract

Cavendish bananas (Musa acuminata Cavendish) have been cultivated in Bondowoso Regency to meet local market demands. Cultivating Cavendish bananas contributes to the potential for emission from global warming (GWP) and environmental quality conditions. This research objective to determine the emission impact and improvement recommendation of Cavendish Bananas production in the Bondowoso Regency as an environmentally friendly product. This research used the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which has steps such as goals and scope determining, life cycle inventory, and life cycle impact assessment and interpretations. The results of this research show that in one cycle of Cavendish banana cultivation, total GWP emissions of 95,544 kgCO2eq are generated. This impact is derived from pesticides, chemical fertilizers, diesel fuel consumption, electricity consumption, solid waste, and liquid waste. To minimize these impacts, alternatives such as compost fertilizer, fermented animal feed, processed food from banana hearts, banana chips, wastewater treatment, and the use of solar panels for electricity are needed. If implemented, these alternatives can reduce total GWP emissions by 76% or 72.537 kgCO2eq compared to conventional cultivation.

Abstract

Laboratory activities at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, University of XYZ produce wastewater that is still dumped directly into the environment. Wastewater content such as pH, TDS, TSS, BOD and COD that exceed quality standards cause potential damage to the environment, especially the river environment. The construction of the constructed wetland phytoremediation wastewater treatment plant aims to manage laboratory wastewater to be safe when it is made into the environment. The purpose of this study is to calculate the value of financial feasibility and cost-benefit value of wetland phytoremediation wastewater treatment plant. The results of the calculation of the value of financial analysis by the method of analysis NPV, IRR, BCR, PBP, shows the NPV value of Rp. 7.456.063; IRR value of 12%; BCR value of 1,06%, and PBP value for 1 year so that the wastewater treatment plant construction project feasible. The value of benefits to costs has a value of 1,05 means the project is feasible because the value of the benefits provided is greater than the costs used.

Abstract

Quail farming plays a role in providing a source of animal protein for the community. However, farmers are often faced with the problem of high ration prices and the difficulty of handling waste. The circular economy model using BSF larvae has the potential to overcome these two problems. The utilization of BSF larvae in a circular economy has the potential as feed and is known as a decomposer of organic waste, including quail farm waste. However, as a process increases, energy consumption will also increase and increase the potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, this study aims to assess the impact of global warming, production energy efficiency, and provide recommendations to produce a more efficient and environmentally friendly production process. One that can be used is the life cycle assessment (LCA) method which refers to the ISO 14040 standard. The LCA method has four stages in its method, namely: defining objectives and scope, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation followed by improvement. The results showed that through the application of a circular economy with the use of BSF larvae as a waste treatment organism, it was able to reduce GWP. Before the implementation of the circular economy, the GWP produced was 19.60 kg CO2eq. Then after the implementation of the circular economy, the first alternative GWP decreased to 10.78 kg CO2eq and in the second alternative, due to higher energy use, the resulting GWP increased to 31.73 kg CO2eq. Through the implementation of a circular economy, production energy efficiency is considered good, namely the 1st alternative NEV: 284.58 and NER: 1.59. Meanwhile, the second alternative resulted in NEV and NER which were smaller than the 1st alternative, with NEV: 156.90 and NER: 1.19. Whereas before the implementation of the circular economy NEV: -320.64 and NER: 0.12. Recommendations to produce more efficient and environmentally friendly production are: replacing the energy source of the drying process from LPG fuel with solar heat energy as an energy source in the drying process of BSF larvae.

Abstract

Kopi gayo merupakan salah satu komoditas unggulan ekspor dari Provinsi Aceh yang memiliki reputasi internasional. Namun, pengelolaan kopi saat ini menghadapi tantangan serius berupa degradasi lahan, perubahan iklim, dan praktik budidaya yang belum ramah lingkungan sehingga perlunya pengelolaan kopi yang berkelanjutan salah satunya yang rendah emisi karbon. Provinsi Aceh memiliki potensi besar mengembangkan agroforestri kopi melalui program perhutanan sosial yang memberikan akses legal kepada masyarakat untuk mengelola kawasan hutan secara berkelanjutan. Pendekatan berbasis sistem sosial-ekologi menjadi kunci untuk memahami keterkaitan antara aspek ekologi (keanekaragaman hayati, penyerapan karbon, konservasi tanah dan air) dan aspek sosial (kesejahteraan petani, kelembagaan lokal, akses pasar, dan budaya kopi) yang kompleks dan dinamis. Melalui penguatan kelembagaan petani, insentif ekonomi hijau, serta dukungan kebijakan, agroforestri kopi dapat menjadi alternatif strategi pembangunan rendah karbon sekaligus meningkatkan daya saing kopi gayo di pasar global. Policy brief ini memberikan analisis kondisi terkini, tantangan sosial-ekologi, serta rekomendasi kebijakan untuk mengoptimalkan perhutanan sosial sebagai instrumen pengembangan agroforestri kopi gayo rendah karbon di Aceh.

Abstract

Sabet Village, Jaya District, Aceh Jaya Regency, presents significant potential for Robusta coffee-based agroforestry development under social forestry arrangements. This study analyzes the livelihood asset conditions of coffee farmers in Sabet Village using the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) framework and identifies green investment pathways that can strengthen coffee-based village development. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining household surveys, in-depth interviews, and field observations. Results indicate that financial capital scored highest (3.97), followed by physical capital (3.53), human capital (3.35), social capital (2.86), and natural capital (2.22). Key village assets include a Fine Robusta cupping score of 83.00 surpassing the international specialty threshold, functioning local institutions including Lembaga Adat (customary governance) and Baitul Mal (Islamic social finance), and a supportive regulatory framework under Qanun No. 10/2008. The low natural capital score signals ecological pressures requiring urgent intervention through sustainable agroforestry practices. Green investment opportunities from Japan, channeled through JICA, the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), and Japan's Green Transformation (GX) policy, offer strategic pathways for financing land rehabilitation and enhancing the competitiveness of Sabet’s coffee in global markets. This study recommends strengthening local institutional capacity and developing asset-based financing schemes as the foundation for sustainable village development.

Abstract

Coffee plantations in Gombengsari represent a potential natural resource that supports the development of sustainable educational tourism. Beyond their economic value, these plantations also provide informative value and a comprehensive cultural experience for tourists. This study aimed to determine management development strategies and assess the feasibility of educational tourism in Gombengsari Coffee Village based on its natural resource potential. A descriptive approach was employed to systematically described and explained the characteristics of the research object. The results showed that the development management strategy emphasizes financial management and transparency, enhancement and expansion of human resources, as well as appropriate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) assessment, the tourism site achieved a score of 57.1% of the total fulfilled sub-indicators. These findings indicate that the educational tourism initiative is feasible; however, improvements are still required for sub-criteria that are not yet fulfilled.

Abstract

Cavendish bananas, which are popular internationally, could boost Indonesian horticultural exports. PT. XYZ specializes in the cultivation of Cavendish bananas, has a banana plantation in Bondowoso Regency's Sampean Baru Watershed. Factors that must be considered to ensure that the cultivation process runs smoothly include the availability of sufficient water to support cultivation activities. This study aimed to determine the condition of the Sampean Baru Watershed water balance due to the existence of Cavendish banana plantations owned by PT. XYZ. This study involves calculating water availability using FJ. Mock model and calculating water needs, which include calculating the water needs of PT. XYZ's Cavendish banana plantation, agricultural water needs, domestic-non-domestic water needs, and livestock water needs in the Sampean Baru Watershed area. The data used include climatology data, rainfall data, plant data, watershed area data, Bondowoso Regency planting plan data, land cover maps, and soil type maps. The results show that the Sampean Baru Watershed can meet the current water needs of banana plantations and for development purposes. The water balance condition is in surplus in all months. The total water requirement for PT. XYZ's Cavendish banana plantation is currently 0.00976 m3/s. The total surplus generated is 301.86 m3/s, with the total water requirement for agriculture, domestic, non-domestic, and livestock being 44.189 m3/s. Development can be carried out until the Cavendish banana plantation is 13,230.24 ha in area, because the water balance is balanced under these conditions. It is recommended that development not exceed this value to anticipate a deficit condition.

Abstract

Variations in filtration media and hydraulic retention time are important factors in optimizing wastewater quality improvement. The objective of this study is to recommend the optimal height level of gravel and silica sand (SiO2) combination and contact time in physical treatment methods for improving the quality of coffee processing wastewater. Three height-level variations of the gravel–silica sand filtration media combination were tested, namely 10:5 cm (T1), 7.5:7.5 cm (T2), and 5:10 cm (T3), along with two flow rate variations of 5.5 mL/second and 9.5 mL/second. All treatments were conducted in three replications to determine the standard error of the experimental data. The best-performing treatment was a combination of 5 cm gravel and 10 cm silica sand (T3) at a flow rate of 5.5 mL/second, which reduced turbidity, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), ammonia (NH3), and phosphate (PO4) by 61.65±1.43%, 49.00±6.66%, 50.66±4.35%, 53.75±4.35%, and 76.99±4.54%, respectively, at a hydraulic retention time of 4 hours. The height level of the gravel and silica sand (SiO2) media, along with the optimum hydraulic retention time, had a positive effect on reducing pollutant content in coffee processing wastewater.
