Abstract

This research aims the delusion within Alfred, the main character in Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea. The delusion within the main character has great impact toward the novel. Ritunanno and Bortolotti’s (2021) theory of delusion is meant to analyze the delusion within the main character.  This method is adequate for analyzing the delusion within the main character in Salt to the Sea novel. This research uses qualitative method. The data will be taken from dialogues between the main character with other characters and the author’s narrations. The delusion within the main characters is collected by identifying and classifying the dialogues into the beginning, the process, and the result of the delusion within the main character. The delusion is portrayed by Alfred which leads to the tragic impacts. The beginning of the delusion occurs in Alfred’s environments that depicts how his parents and friends treat him in certain ways he does not want to. While, the process of the delusion occurs when he’s on duty during the war. It is interpreted how he goes through such underestimation toward colleagues and strangers being rude to him. Eventually, the impacts make some significant changes toward Alfred’s character. The positive impacts are the remembrance of his mother and the details of the ship. And the negative impacts are the neglect on other people and his death. All in all, this research shows the worst that the delusion could create to Alfred is his death.

Abstract

The rapidly escalating plagiarism rate among students in higher education has become a global academic concern. This quantitative study investigated the factors that led to student plagiarism. Eighty EFL university students from Indonesia participated in this investigation. The online questionnaire consisted of two sections: demographic information and a plagiarism perception scale, which included perspectives on plagiarism, the perceived significance of plagiarism, and contributing factors to students' plagiarism. The results disclosed a superficial understanding of the various forms of plagiarism. Personal, academic, and institutional factors contributed to plagiarism in the research. To reduce the prevalence of plagiarism in later phases, the results highlighted the need for practical policies and a cohesive framework to increase students' awareness at the onset. Course instructors should take the development of solid writing and referencing skills seriously, and the common leniency towards instances of plagiarism by undergraduate students must be replaced with a more severe attitude that encourages innovative and authentic research practice. To reduce plagiarism effectively, it is essential to enhance students’ understanding of its seriousness, provide robust academic support, and ensure that institutional policies are clear, consistent, and enforced.

Abstract

This study listed factors that affect motivation among Indonesian English as Foreign Language (EFL) in-service teachers using the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs theory located at an urban secondary school in North Sumatera, Indonesia. Four Indonesian EFL in-service teachers had participated in this qualitative study, with interviews and observations used as primary methods in data collect ion. In this study, researchers found that fulfillment of educational background, feelings of love towards children, passion for becoming teachers, family inspiration, and religious reasons were motivational factors for teachers. From these findings, it can be concluded that teachers were self-motivated (intrinsic) and were not influenced by external factors. However, factor that negatively affected the motivation of teachers was working environment, mainly at school (extrinsic) level. These factors include having a big group of students in a classroom and extracurricular activities which resulted in students being tired, which could cause teachers to lack enthusiasm. Therefore, teachers require professional development to address self-actualization needs to excel in their competence.
