Abstract Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan salah satu materi pengajaran membaca pemahaman pada teks exposition di Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) dengan menggunakan strategi annotation. strategi annotation adalah strategi yang membuat pembaca menjadi lebih aktif dalam memahami isi teks dengan cara memberikan tanda atau symbol pada ide pokok, ide pendukung, kata sulit, kata penghubung, definisi, dan kesimpulan. Lalu membuat kembali dengan bahasa sendiri setiap ide pokok dan ide pendukung. Sehingga siswa bisa menghasilkan teks baru dengan mengunakan bahasa mereka. guru Bahasa Inggris pada Sekolah Menegah Atas dapat menggunakan strategi ini untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan pemahaman mereka dalam membaca. Sehingga siswa akan lebih tertarik untuk belajar lebih aktif, dan juga dapat meningkatkan keterampilannya dalam berbahasa. Kata kunci: reading, comprehension, annotation, exposition

In this paper, the writer use a strategy known as the Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), which is taught in the classroom. This paper was written because there are some problems faced by the students while they are reading comprehension, which are: the students have read the low interest, low vocabulary and low critical thinking skill. Finally, students are lazy to read and reading strategies that are less good. Other factors are teachers’ less creative in selecting strategies for teaching. Collaborative Strategic Reading is a technique that teaches students to work cooperatively on a reading assignment to improve better comprehension. This strategy can maximize the development of students to think critically consisting of four phases, such as: Preview, click and clunk, Get the Gist, and Wrap Up. This paper is also contained a description of how the implementation of teaching reading by using CSR strategies. The writer hopes this strategy can help English teachers in teaching reading in an effort to improve students' reading ability.

Speaking is one of the four elements of language that is very important to master in order to support a person's ability to speak. Talking is the process of conveying an idea and information orally to the opponent. In Indonesia, English has been taught since Elementary level up to University level. However, not many students are able to speak English fluently. This paper is discussing about one technique that can help teacher in teaching speaking in more enjoyable way at classroom. The technique that will be discussed is Talking Stick Technique. The technique uses a wooden stick as a sign for whom who may speak.

This research discusses about spelling errors which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter. Participants in this research are Office Administration Students in SMK N 3 Padang, XI AP 1 class which consists of 24 students. The identified problems of this research are what kinds of spelling errors—insertion, omission, substitution, and transposition errors—which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter, and what kinds of parts of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. The objectives of this research are to find out what kinds of spelling error which are committed by the students, and what kinds of part of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. Writing test is an instrument that is used in this research. The result of this research shows that students commit all kinds of spelling errors in their writing, and students’ spelling errors also occur in all kinds of parts of speech. Students’ spelling errors mostly occur in substitution error in their writing. Then, noun part is the highest part which occurs from students’ spelling errors.

Abstrak Siswa SMA masih menemui kesulitan dalam menulis hortatory teks. Hal ini disebabkan karena mereka masih lemah dalam hal menulis dan menyalurkan ide-ide untuk dituangkan dalam teks hortatori. STOP and DARE adalah sebuah strategi menulis yang terdiri dari STOP dan DARE. STOP merupakan strategi yang digunakan untuk menstimulus siswa untuk mengeluarkan ide-ide berupa opini yang digunakan dalam menulis teks hortatori. Setelah ide-ide siswa terkumpul maka guru akan mengaplikasikan DARE sebagai strategi ketika menulis. Siswa dan guru bersama sama mengembangkan ide-ide yang telah terkumpul menjadi paragaraf-paragraf yang runtut dan akhirnya menjadi sebuah teks hortatory. Guru memberikan kebebasan kepada siswa untuk mengemukakan pendapat mereka mengenai sebuah topik atau isu yang dia sediakan. Setelah itu guru menuntun siswa dalam langkah-langkah penulisan. Dengan mengaplikasikan strategi ini dalam mengajar writing khususnya menulis teks hortatory guru akan mudah mengekplorasi ide-ide siswa dan mudah membantu mereka dalam mengembangkannya menjadi sebuah teks hortatori. This research was about the students' ability in comprehending TOEFL reading test at at English department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The research design was the descriptive research. The population of this study was third year students of English Education Study Program Academic Year 2017. The population was 148 students from 6 classes. The sample was taken by cluster random sampling technique so that the number of samples obtained was 22 samples. The instrument used was a reading TOEFL test for 60 minutes. The students’ comprehension ability was also analyzed in 5 types of reading comprehension skill. Based on this research, students' ability in comprehending TOEFL reading texts was poor. This finding indicated that the third-year students at English Department of UNP had less comprehension in reading TOEFL test.

Vocabulary is an important factor in learning a language. People will not be able to listening, speaking, reading, and writing without mastering vocabulary. Also in learning English, vocabulary has an important role. However, not all of the Junior High School students learn vocabulary easily which is caused by the learning activity which is not really interesting for the students. Kick Me technique is astrategy which can be used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary to Junior High School students. Kick Me technique is an learning activity that students find the missing words in the worksheet on their classmates’ backs. Analogy and word relationships are given as a clue to finish it.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan collocation dalam tulisan esai tiga sampai lima paragraf. Pola collocation yang di analisa dalam tulisan ini adalah verb + noun collocation dan adjective + noun collocation. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif . Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa kependidikan semester tiga yang telah telah mempelajari Writing 2. Sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas KP2 tahun masuk 2011. Instrument penelitian ini adalah tes dimana responden diberikan sejumlah waktu untuk menulis sebuah esai tiga sampai lima paragraph. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation dan adjective noun collocation berada pada level “good” dan “excellent”. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation dan adjective + noun collocation bukanlah masalah utama dalam esai tiga sampai lima paragraf mahasiswa semester tiga. Serta, dapat juga disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation lebih sulit dibandingkan dengan penggunaan adjective + noun collocation. Kata kunci : Collocation, writing, use of collocation

Penelitian ini berdasar pada fakta bahwa buku teks “Look Ahead: An English Course” for Senior High School Students Year XII yang diterbitkan oleh Penerbit Erlangga masih digunakan oleh sebagian besar sekolah menengah atas di Sumatera Barat sejak pertama kali terbit pada 2006 sampai saat ini dan keterbacaan teks bacaannya belum pernah dianalisis sebelumnya. Jadi penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui keterbacaan dariteks bacaan pada buku teks “Look Ahead: An English Course” for Senior High School Students Year XII yang diterbitkan oleh Penerbit Erlangga. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif. Subyek penelitiannya adalah buku teks “Look Ahead: An English Course” for Senior High School Students Year XII yang diterbitkan oleh Penerbit Erlangga. Datanya diperoleh dari analisis keterbacaan teks menggunakan rumus keterbacaan. Rumus yang digunakan adalah Rumus Keterbacaan Flesch. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah format analisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks bacaan pada buku teks “Look Ahead: An English Course” for Senior High School Students Year XII adalah tidak berada pada tingkat keterbacaan yang tepat dan tidak sesuai dengan tingkat siswa sekolah menengah atas kelas XII. Dari 10 teks yang dianalisis, hanya satu teks yang cocok untuk siswa sekolah menengah atas kelas XII, yaitu teks berjudul Tsunami dengan tingkat keterbacaan 50,3. Jadi, buku teks “Look Ahead: An English Course” for Senior High School Students Year XII yang diterbitkan oleh Penerbit Erlangga tidak layak lagi digunakan dalam kegiatan pembelajaran siswa sekolah menengah atas kelas XII sehingga guru harus menemukan buku pengganti yang sesuai dengan level siswa, tentunya dengan memperhitungkan keterbacaan teks pada buku tersebut terlebih dahulu

English Language Teaching Program is one of the programs at UNP that will propose to be certified by ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). One of the requirements proposed by AUN-QA is getting feedback from stakeholders on curriculum. Program Specification is one of one crucial feature in curriculum. This study aimed to find out the students` perception on program specification of English Language Teaching Program based on AUN-QA criteria and to find what improvement needed based on students` perception. This survey study involved students first year, second year, third year and fourth year of ELT Program at UNP. Questionnaire containing 15 items was distributed to 352 students through Google form in order to get the data. Questionnaire consist four scales and then weighing is done in order to convert it into mean score. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. It is found out that the mean score for program identity is very high, 3.22 and it means that students have very good perception toward program identity. The mean score for potential career is also very high, 3.38 and indicates that students have very good perception toward potential career. The main finding shows that students have very good perception toward program specification even though there are few comments given by them who gave negative response on questionnaire. However, there is a little improvement needed based on students` perception. In conclusion, there is slighly improvement needed based on students` perception.Key words: Perception, Program Specification, AUN-QA
