Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the forms and levels of reading comprehension questions found in the “Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut” textbook for eleventh-grade students. This textbook is used in elective English classes under the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia. The study used a descriptive quantitative method to classify the forms of questions using Day and Park’s (2005) framework and to identify their comprehension levels based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. This textbook contained 68 reading comprehension questions in total. The findings show that WH-questions are dominant in this textbook (56%), followed by multiple-choice (20%), true/false (15%), yes/no (6%), and alternative questions (3%). In terms of comprehension levels, 47% of the questions are at literal comprehension, 28% inferential, 13% evaluation, and 12% appreciation. No questions are found in the reorganization level. Reeves’ ideal percentage of 40% lower-level, 40% medium-level, and 20% higher-level is not achieved by the distribution of these questions. Students may face difficulty because this textbook contains more lower-level questions, lack of medium-level questions, but a little above higher-level questions. This textbook needs to provide a more evenly distributed variety of questions to help students improve their reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the teaching strategies used by an English teacher in an inclusive classroom and the problems encountered during their implementation at SMP Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. Inclusive education ensures equal learning opportunities for all students regardless of abilities or backgrounds. This was a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. This study focused on one English teacher teaching class 8B, the most diverse class in the school. Data were collected through three classroom observations, a semi-structured interview, and supporting documentation such as field notes and photographs. The findings revealed that the teacher employed various strategies, including direct instruction, expository learning, differentiated instruction, peer tutoring, and discovery learning with mind mapping.      The choice of strategies depended on classroom conditions and student engagement levels. Despite the teacher’s adaptability, several problems emerged, such as difficulty preparing suitable materials, students’ limited comprehension of instructions, lack of inclusive education training, unexpected behaviors from students with autism, and insufficient parental support. To address these challenges, the teacher utilized self-learning, discussions with colleagues and the principal, and creative problem-solving. This study underscores the importance of teacher adaptability and institutional support in inclusive classrooms, offering insights for improving inclusive English teaching practices in junior high schools in Indonesia.

Abstract

The aim of this community service activity is to develop the professional competence of teachers from the critical reading literacy aspect of high school language teachers in Koto Tangah Padang sub-district (SMA Negeri 7, SMA Negeri 8, and SMA Negeri 13 Padang). The main problems that inspired this activity were 1) lack of teacher professional skills in teaching critical reading literacy, 2) lack of teacher understanding of strategies for teaching critical reading literacy, and 3) lack of media and critical literacy space in schools. To increase teacher literacy, the service team uses four stages of training, namely: a) planning stage, b) implementing stage, c) mentoring stage, and d) monitoring and evaluation stage. This activity involved 15 English and Indonesian teachers who took part in four face-to-face training sessions. The results obtained from this training were an increase in teachers' critical reading literacy skills based on a perception questionnaire distributed to teachers of 91.7% (very positive). It is hoped that later teachers will be able to design critical reading literacy teaching modules by applying good critical reading strategies and approaches to students.

Abstract

This systematic review investigates the effects of website-based learning on student motivation and vocabulary mastery in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework, thirty-five empirical studies published between 2013 and 2024 were selected from major academic databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The review synthesizes evidence on how web-based platforms—such as learning management systems, interactive vocabulary websites, multimedia environments, and gamified tools—support motivational engagement and lexical development. The findings indicate that website-based learning consistently enhances learner motivation by promoting autonomy, reducing anxiety, and increasing enjoyment through interactive and gamified features. Flexible access, immediate feedback, and personalized learning pathways further contribute to sustained engagement. In terms of vocabulary mastery, web-based instruction significantly improves word recognition, recall, retention, and contextual usage. Platforms integrating multimedia input, spaced repetition, and contextualized tasks show the strongest effects on vocabulary acquisition. Despite its benefits, several challenges were identified, including unequal access to technology, limited digital literacy, and the risk of reduced teacher–student interaction. Nonetheless, the overall evidence suggests that website-based learning provides substantial advantages over traditional methods when supported by appropriate pedagogical design. This review concludes that integrating website-based instruction into EFL classrooms can meaningfully enhance motivation and vocabulary learning, while future research should explore long-term impacts and platform effectiveness across diverse learner populations.
