Abstract

The bark of the sengkuang Dracontomelon dao (Blanco) Merr & Rofle stem contains secondary metabolites alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and triterpenoids which are efficacious as anthelmintics. This study aims to formulate, physically evaluate and test the effectiveness of sengkuang stem bark ethanol extract syrup as anthelmintic against chicken roundworms (Ascaridia galli). The syrup preparation was formulated in 3 variations of extract concentrations i.e 0.2%; 0.4% and 0.6%. The syrup was physically evaluated in the form of organoleptic tests, pH, displaced volume and specific gravity.  Inserting 5 chicken roundworms into each test solution i.e 0.9% NaCl (negative control), 0.5% mebendazole (positive control), sengkuang stem bark syrup 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6%. It was incubated at 37°C and the time and number of worm deaths were observed every 1 hour for 24 hours. The results showed the sengkuang bark ethanol extract syrup (0.2%; 0.4% and 0.6%) met the requirements in syrup preparations with brownish yellow, brownish orange and brown colors, distinctive aroma and sweet taste; pH ± 6; displaced volume ± 97-98% and specific gravity ± 1.2. All sengkuang bark ethanol extract syrup formulations had the ability to kill 100% of worms with LT50 values of 11.40 hours; 10.33 hours and 6.87 hours.

Abstract

Bajakah root (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk) is a plant that has antibacterial properties. Bajakah root plant (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk) contains saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and phenols. This study aims to determine the activity on Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. In this study, the samples tested were 5% ethanol extract facial soap formula, soap base (negative control), and acnes facial soap (positive control). Testing antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes bacterial growth using the diffusion method. The results of the study showed that the 5% bajakah root ethanol extract facial soap formula obtained could inhibit Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, namely in the positive control of 16.81 mm, F1 of 4.7 mm, F2 of 4.27 mm, F3 of 4.7 mm, and negative control of 0 mm. These results show that the facial soap formula of 5% bajakah root ethanol extract is included in the weak category of inhibitory power.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a disease that is a leading cause of total mortality in Indonesia as well as worldwide. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia is approximately 45% globally, around 30% in Southeast Asia, 35% in Indonesia, and 37.7% in West Kalimantan. In the management of hypercholesterolemia, evaluation and prescription patterns are crucial to reduce the risk of errors in prescribing anti-cholesterol drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prescription of anti-cholesterol drugs in geriatric patients at Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Hospital, Pontianak, during the period of January–February 2023. This study is a quantitative descriptive study using prescription data from outpatient geriatric patients receiving anti-hypercholesterolemia medication. The sample size was determined using the Lemeshow formula, resulting in 100 respondents selected through simple random sampling. The results showed that hypercholesterolemia patients were most prevalent in the 61–65-year age group, accounting for 22%, with females comprising 56%. The most frequently used anti-cholesterol drug was Atorvastatin (78%), with a dose of 20 mg, administered once daily in 98% of cases, and the most common comorbidity was heart disease (49%). The use of anti-cholesterol drugs was considered rational if it met the criteria of correct diagnosis, correct patient, correct disease indication, correct drug selection, and correct dosage, achieving a rationality rate of 100%. The study findings indicate that the most frequently prescribed anti-hypercholesterolemia drug was Atorvastatin, with rational prescribing practices observed in hypercholesterolemia patients.
