Abstract

Liquefaction is a significant geological hazard in earthquake-prone locations like Padang City, Indonesia. The phenomenon happens when saturated soil loses strength owing to seismic shaking, resulting in substantial infrastructure damage. Accurate identification of sensitive locations is critical to catastrophe mitigation. This study aims to map water distribution using optical satellite data and estimate its importance as a crucial element in determining liquefaction vulnerability. The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) was used to assess water and vegetation indexes, taking advantage of its sensitivity to water content in varied land surfaces. We recommended using the NIR (near-infrared) and SWIR (short wave infrared) bands with 832.8 nm and 2202.4 nm, respectively, which are sensitive to soil water content. High-resolution satellite data were used to create NDWI maps, highlighting locations with high water saturation. These findings were combined with geological and seismic data to identify liquefaction-prone zones. The study found that locations with high water content, as measured by NDWI, are highly associated with greater liquefaction susceptibility. The findings highlight the importance of water distribution in determining soil behavior during seismic occurrences. This study highlights the value of NDWI as a low-cost and efficient tool for measuring liquefaction vulnerability at the regional level. The technique offers insights into Padang City's urban planning, catastrophe risk reduction, and community preparedness. By identifying high-risk zones, the study aids in making informed decisions to reduce the impact of future earthquakes. Most of the water content change occurred along the coastal line and in the low-lying areas of Koto Tanggah and North Padang sub-districts. The model can be used in other places with similar geological challenges, providing a scalable solution for liquefaction risk assessment.

Abstract

Science literacy is an important skill in modern science education, involving understanding concepts, reasoning scientifically, and applying science in everyday situations. However, the level of science literacy among students in Indonesia is still low, as seen in the 2022 PISA results, which are below the global average. This shows the need for learning models that can increase cognitive participation and form a deep conceptual understanding. Generative learning models, which focus on knowledge construction through the integration of prior knowledge with new learning experiences, are considered suitable for improving science literacy, especially when combined with cognitive conflict strategies. This study aims to examine the impact of a generative learning model that uses cognitive conflict strategies on students' science literacy on the topic of Fluids in Grade XI Phase F. This study applied a quasi-experimental method with a single group pretest-posttest design. The results show an increase in the average score from 63.75 on the pretest to 91.25 on the posttest. The hypothesis test produced a significance value of 0.000 (less than 0.05) with an N-Gain of 0.7667, which is classified as high. These findings prove that the generative learning model with cognitive conflict strategies is effective in improving students' science literacy.

Abstract

This study assesses seismic vulnerability in Pantai Cermin District, West Sumatra, using microtremor measurements analyzed through the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) method. Ambient vibration data were systematically acquired to characterize local site effects by deriving dominant frequency (f₀) and amplification factor (A₀), which reflect the dynamic behavior of near-surface soil layers. These parameters were integrated to compute the seismic vulnerability index (Kg) as an indicator of potential soil deformation under seismic loading. The results reveal pronounced spatial variability in f₀, A₀, and Kg values, strongly controlled by geological conditions. Areas dominated by young alluvial deposits and unconsolidated sediments exhibit low dominant frequencies, high amplification, and elevated Kg values, indicating high susceptibility to seismic ground motion amplification. Conversely, zones underlain by compact volcanic and intrusive rocks show more stable seismic responses. The spatial correspondence between high Kg zones and densely populated areas highlights increased seismic risk due to the interaction between site effects and exposure. The consistency between HVSR characteristics, geological framework, and vulnerability patterns demonstrates the robustness of the microtremor-based approach for seismic microzonation. This study provides a scientific basis for risk-informed land-use planning and earthquake mitigation strategies in seismically active regions.

Abstract

Persistent challenges in secondary physics education include uneven instructional implementation, limited pedagogical use of digital technology, and modest development of higher-order competencies such as creative thinking. While prior studies have often examined these dimensions separately, integrated descriptive evidence across authentic school contexts remains limited, particularly in resource-diverse educational environments. This study aims to descriptively analyze the alignment among instructional practices, technology-supported learning facilities, students’ affective characteristics, and creative thinking–oriented physics achievement across three public senior high schools in Indonesia. A quantitative descriptive design was employed involving 102 students. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires on learning implementation and affective characteristics, a binary instrument on access to digital learning facilities, and a multiple-choice physics achievement test targeting higher-order conceptual understanding in heat and thermal expansion. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed relatively consistent instructional structures across schools, yet substantial variation in practicum activities, technology utilization, and facility access. Although students demonstrated moderate motivation and positive attitudes toward physics, creative thinking achievement remained below half of the maximum score in all schools, indicating a misalignment between instructional conditions and higher-order learning outcomes. These findings provide baseline empirical evidence highlighting the need for stronger alignment among pedagogy, technological integration, and targeted competencies to support meaningful physics learning in resource-varying secondary education contexts.
