Abstract

Mathematics is often understood as an abstract discipline and independent of cultural values, whereas in the cultural practice of society, mathematical concepts are usually integrated into cultural traditions and artifacts. In the context of meaningful and culturally relevant mathematics education, it is essential to explore mathematical knowledge embedded in local cultural practices. Through a qualitative approach with ethnographic design, this study examines ethnomathematics on traditional headgear of Jambi Malay women, focusing on mathematical concepts integrated with the shape, motif, and technique of folding the navel. The study results show that at least 5 shapes of tenaculum represent geometric concepts such as folding symmetry patterns, geometric transformations, angles, and pattern repetitions that resemble flat shapes and 3-dimensional shapes. Each design and shape of the tengkuluk fold has geometric characteristics and philosophical values, such as harmony with nature and the social structure of the Jambi community. This research contributes to developing ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning design by integrating contextual, project-based learning, and inquiry approaches. Thus, this study not only enriches the ethnomathematical literature in Indonesia but also bridges the gap between modern science and local wisdom in the context of meaningful and culturally relevant mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and describe customs of marriage in the Toba Batak people, in particular the stages of implementation, values contained in the culture, as well as changes that occur as a consequence of the influence of modernization. The methods used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. Research results show that the customs of Toba Batak weddings consist of a number of important stages, such as mangarisik, marhata sinamot, pamasu-masuon, and the party show. Each stage contains strong social, religious, and kinship values, as well as confirms the social structure of the Toba Batak people, especially the clan system. However, modernization and shifts in society cause a number of customary stages to be simplified or abandoned. This research concludes that although the customs of Toba Batak marriage are still preserved, there is a transformation in meaning and practice as a form of adaptation to contemporary socio-cultural dynamics.

Abstract

Background: Agroforestry systems integrate agricultural production with environmental conservation, particularly in tropical regions. Although durian-based agroforestry practices have long been established in Jambi, comprehensive studies on their ecological structure, contribution to biodiversity, and sustainability strategies remain limited. This study aims to analyze the population structure of durian trees, agroforestry patterns, biodiversity, as well as the challenges and sustainability strategies of the system.  Methodology: Data were collected through vegetation analysis and in-depth interviews conducted in durian agroforestry areas in Selat, Jambi Province. Findings: The results show that agroforestry systems in this region are dominated by old durian trees that have strong associations with other species such as Jengkol (Archidendron pauciflorum), Duku (Lansium domesticum), and Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis).  Contribution: This research contributes to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for local flora and fauna and maintaining ecosystem balance. However, the sustainability of this system faces significant challenges, including land conversion due to population pressure, oil palm plantation expansion, declining durian productivity, and the emergence of the “tasteless durian” phenomenon that reduces fruit quality. Therefore, management strategies focusing on species diversification, tree rejuvenation, and innovations in cultivation technology are essential to sustain durian agroforestry and improve community welfare, particularly in the Selat region

Abstract

Learning using the problem-based learning (PBL) enables students to solve problems as well as improve their science knowledge and skills. This study aims to investigate the effect of the use of PBL on critical thinking skills of high school students in biotechnology. Various levels of students’ self-confidence are used as a moderating variable for PBL in producing the effect. A total of 64 students of SMAN 8 Batanghari Jambi were involved in this study. Some 32 students were allocated each to the experimental class which was learning using PBL and the control class which was learning using the expository learning. Data were collected using a pre-validated self-confidence questionnaires and tests of critical thinking skills. The factorial type of quasi-experimental with pretest posttest nonequivalent control group design was used in this study. The collected data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA test. The results showed that PBL-students had a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.87) than their counterpart (78.80). The data also showed that the students with better self-confidence also have a higher average score of critical thinking skills (85.32) than those with lower self-confidence (79.34). The results of the two-way ANOVA test showed that there was an effect of the use of PBL and the students' self-confidence on students' critical thinking skills. Even though it is very weak, the interaction between the learning model and the self-confidence was seemingly existed in affecting the students' critical thinking skills. It can be concluded that the appropriate learning model and appropriate self-confidence can affect student learning critical thinking skills

Abstract

Natural peatlands are home to a wide variety of animals and plants and provide ecosystem services for humans and the environment. Peatlands in Jambi are still not appropriately managed, partly because of the lack of community knowledge regarding peat. This study reveals the knowledge and perceptions of junior high school students about peat, the factors that influence it, and its implementation in science learning. We conducted the study on 228 junior high school students and 21 science teachers in Tanjung Jabung Timur. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and focused discussions. Data were analyzed descriptively. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using Smart PLS to determine the relationship between students' background, perceptions, and interactions with their knowledge of peat. Students' knowledge of peat is in a low category. The level of student's knowledge is significantly influenced by their experiences (interactions) with peatlands and their perceptions of these resources. The student's family background does not affect students' knowledge of peat.
