Abstract

Problem-solving skills are a crucial component of critical thinking that students must develop to address the challenges of the 21st century. This study focused on creating a test instrument to assess junior high school students' problem-solving abilities in the context of energy topics in science education. The instrument was designed based on problem-solving indicators adapted from PISA, encompassing skills such as exploring and understanding, representing and formulating, planning and implementing, as well as monitoring and reflecting. The research employed the 4D development model (define, design, develop, disseminate). The instrument was trialed on 30 eighth-grade students from SMPN 2 Rangkasbitung. The validity analysis, conducted using Pearson's moment correlation, identified 16 valid questions out of 20. Reliability testing with Cronbach's Alpha yielded a coefficient of 0.873, demonstrating a high degree of reliability. The findings indicated that the instrument effectively measures students' problem-solving skills, aiding their understanding of energy concepts, fostering critical thinking, and enhancing decision-making abilities in problem-solving contexts. Based on these outcomes, the developed instrument is deemed suitable as an evaluation tool for assessing problem-solving skills in schools.

Abstract

The discourse on teacher leadership in developing contexts has long suffered from a narrow gaze, obsessed with competencies, yet blind to conditions; fixated on training, yet inattentive to power. This study disrupts that pattern. Anchored in the evolving landscape of Indonesia’s Guru Penggerak (Mobilizing Teacher) program, we offer a systems-level examination of what truly drives teacher capacity in public elementary schools. Through a robust quantitative analysis, we illuminate the triadic architecture of capacity-building: principled supervision, professionally grounded competence, and an ecologically supportive work environment. The results are not subtle; together, these factors explain 93.4% of the variance in mobilizing teacher capacity. But the implication is not merely statistical. It is structural, cultural, and political. We argue that academic supervision must be reimagined, not as a mechanism of oversight but as a dialogic practice of pedagogical stewardship. Teacher competence must be untethered from static checklists and understood as a socially constructed, morally anchored, and continuously evolving enactment of professionalism. The work environment, too often treated as backdrop, is revealed here as a core determinant of whether teacher leadership is cultivated or crushed. This is not a call for more policy, it is a demand for coherence. Without structural alignment among leadership practices, professional learning ecosystems, and institutional cultures, no reform initiative, no matter how visionary, will outlive its training modules.

Abstract

Purpose – Mastering critical thinking and problem-solving skills is the primary demand in 21st-century education. However, the evaluation results at SMPN 2 Rangkasbitung showed that students still experienced difficulties in these aspects, which were exacerbated by using conventional learning models. For this reason, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with the PhET virtual laboratory and the role of self-efficacy in improving students' problem-solving skills on energy material.Methodology – This study used mixed methods with an explanatory sequential design. In the first stage, a quantitative approach was used to analyze the effect of PBL-PhET and self-efficacy on problem-solving ability, followed by a qualitative approach to explore the quantitative findings further. The sample consisted of 61 randomly selected grade VIII students. Data were collected through problem-solving tests, self-efficacy questionnaires, and lesson observations and analyzed using inferential statistical tests.Findings – The results showed that applying PBL integrated with PhET significantly improved students' problem-solving ability (r = 0.044). Self-efficacy also significantly influences students' problem-solving success (r < 0.001). However, the interaction between the learning model and self-efficacy did not show a significant effect (r = 0.159). The qualitative findings supported the quantitative results by showing that students with high self-efficacy were more active and confident and demonstrated more effective problem-solving strategies during problem-based learning.Significance—This research confirms the importance of integrating innovative approaches and psychological factors in science learning. Teachers and curriculum developers need to consider implementing PBL-PhET and strengthening self-efficacy as effective learning strategies relevant to the demands of the times.

Abstract

The phenomenon of boarding school has evolved since the 1990s. In addition to having advantages, the school also has barriers in the learning process. Therefore, the need to explore some information directly related to the reasons why boarding school is developed, students’ life in school together and the learning process that occurred. The research method is used  a qualitative approach. Schools in this study are limited to Islamic boarding schools at junior high school level in grade VII. The research procedure is undertaken to find the phenomenon of research subjects that occurred at boarding schools. The validity of data in this research uses source and method triangulation techniques, namely by checking phenomena obtained from observations, interviews with parents, interviews with students, interviews with teachers, and interviews with teachers dormitories. The general conclusion regarding Islamic-based boarding schools is that the school has become the choice of parents in educating their children to gain abilities in the religious and academic fields. In mathematics learning, the teachers prefer direct approach learning rather than indirect learning, and also most of them do not use a lesson plan as teaching guides. Therefore, the school must be able to choose and apply a learning approach oriented to the conditions of diversity that occur in boarding schools so that students have no difficulty in receiving the subject matter.
