Abstract

This study aims to examine the types and frequency of students’ errors in using countable and uncountable nouns in descriptive text writing. The research was conducted at SMK IT Insan Kreatif Tanjung Morawa, focusing on first-grade students. The objectives of the study are: (1) to identify the types of grammatical errors made by students in applying countable and uncountable nouns, and (2) to determine the most dominant type of error. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, and the participants consisted of 28 students from class X-A. The data were obtained from students’ written descriptive texts, which were then analyzed based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). The analysis revealed that four main types of errors occurred: omission (41.46%), misordering (24.39%), addition (21.95%), and misformation (12.19%). Among these, omission errors were the most dominant. These errors occurred due to several factors, including a lack of understanding of noun classification rules, limited vocabulary, and insufficient exposure to correct usage in context. Additionally, many students confused uncountable nouns with plural countable nouns, resulting in inappropriate use of determiners and verb forms. The findings of this study suggest that English teachers need to emphasize targeted instruction on countable and uncountable nouns, integrate corrective feedback, and provide contextualized practice to help students internalize correct grammatical structures. This research also contributes to the broader field of English language teaching by offering insights into common learner difficulties in grammar, which can be addressed through enhanced pedagogical strategies

Abstract

This research investigates the complex interplay between traditional oral literature and digital linguistics. Specifically, it analyzes the translation techniques applied to Umpasa and Umpama the ritualistic proverbs and poetry of the Batak Toba culture translated into English within the socio-cultural context of traditional wedding ceremonies. The study aims to describe the representation of cultural meanings and evaluate the maintenance or shift of traditional values when processed through the Large Language Model, Gemini AI. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, a corpus of 48 units of oral literature was meticulously collected through field observations in Samosir Regency and further validated by Raja Parhata to ensure cultural authenticity. The findings reveal 63 occurrences of specific translation techniques, with Established Equivalence emerging as the most dominant method (16 findings). This indicates a strategic priority toward functional clarity for a global audience. The analysis concludes that while a linguistic shift from esoteric, metaphorical language to explicit meanings is inevitable, the core philosophical pillars of Batak life Hagabeon, Hamoraon, and Hasangapon remain successfully preserved in the digital translation process.

Abstract

This study looks into how well flowcharts might help students write proposals. Students frequently struggle with structuring ideas, maintaining coherence, and adhering to methodical processes when drafting proposals. Flowcharts were used as a visual planning tool to help students navigate the stages of proposal development, including problem identification, objectives, technique, and anticipated results, in order to solve these problems. The study used a pre-test and post-test approach with students who were taught through activities based on flowcharts. Organization, clarity, and overall writing quality increases were measured by analyzing data gathered through writing exams. The results show that using flowcharts greatly improved students' capacity for idea generation, logical proposal structure, and cohesive information presentation. The study advises including flowcharts into writing training after concluding that they are an excellent teaching method for enhancing students' proposal writing abilities
